missioN statEmENtThe National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates

who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

In my last message I spoke about how we came to purchase the building at 295 N. Lindbergh and move TheResaleShop. Since then I can’t begin to tell you how amazing business has been. We celebrated the Grand Opening of the shop on Thursday Nov. 10 with a very large, excited crowd consisting of customers, members, Rabbi Brigitte Rosenberg, Head of the St. Louis Rabbinical Association; Diane Katzman, who designed the mezuzot that will go on the doorways of the building and inside offices, local VIP’s and State Rep. Jill Schupp and State Senator John Lamping, legislators for the district where the building resides. Representative Schupp and Senator Lamping brought Proclamations from the House and Senate on the purchase of our new building and the celebration of the Grand Opening. It was an amazing weekend and our sales were awesome. I would like to thank the grand opening celebration co-chairs, Susan Katzman, Carolyn Satz and Hillary Friedman and the outstanding committee they assembled. The celebration was a long time in coming and a night I don’t think I will ever forget. I know I have been talking mainly about TheResaleShop, but there are other things going on at NCJW. On Nov. 3, at the Celebrating Women event, NCJW honored Civil Rights Commissioner Frankie Muse Freeman and State Senator Joan Bray with our Hannah G. Solomon Founder's Award. It was one of the most inspiring evenings I’ve ever attended. Senator Bray talked about her time in the Missouri Legislature and all the struggles she had working for women’s rights and trying to get bills passed. Then Frankie Freeman spoke extemporaneously complimenting NCJW on the wonderful projects we have done and to

Senator Bray for all her work in the Legislature. She proceeded to tell us about her time as the first woman AND first black woman on the US Civil Rights Commission, appointed by President Johnson in 1964. Frankie spoke about all the issues today that still need our work and support. Paraphrasing the beautiful Robert Frost poem, she closed with, “We have miles to go before we sleep, miles to go before we sleep.” Our next big event is the 7th annual TriviaNight, on Saturday February 11, 2012 at the Edward Jones Headquarters at Manchester and I-270. This event is always so much fun. Get your friends together for a night of fun, food and finding out that you know more than you thought you did!! The cost is only $25 a person and this year we will have tables of 10. Mark your calendars so you don’t miss out. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a cold February evening, but with my warm NCJW friends! I wish you and your families a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2012.

Warmest Regards,

“Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.” –Chinese Proverb

This proverb is a fitting tribute to the leadership style of NCJW-St. Louis Section’s Program Director, Nancy Weigley. On January 26, 2012, our own Nancy Weigley will be honored with the Mentor Award from JProStl, an association dedicated to supporting professionals working in the Jewish community. Many of us have had the pleasure of working with Nancy the last few years and as Michelle Brooks, NCJW VP of Community Service explains, “ As one person said recently, ‘In working with our partner agencies, volunteers, and members, Nancy always displays an inordinate amount of kindness and compassion in her work. Her interactions include those with children, older adults, and the general NCJW membership – and her unique way of making everyone feel comfortable, worthwhile, and important allows her to bring them into whatever program they are involved in as an equal participant.’ Through her work the past seven years with NCJW, Nancy has touched the lives of so many volunteers including myself, serving as a mentor and friend along the way.” Please join NCJW and JProStl in sending a warm and heart-felt ‘Congratulations’ to Nancy Weigley for her outstanding work at NCJW and in the community! If you would like to attend the luncheon at the JCC Staenberg Family Complex on January 26, 2012, please call Marci Mayer Eisen at 314-442-3810 for information. Tickets are $25.

DidyouknowthatitisstilllegalinMissouritobefiredor denied housing and access to public accommodations simply for being gay or transgender? Did you know that only three of the approximately 90 municipalities in St. Louis County have some form of employment, housing and/or public accommodation protections inclusive of lesbian, gay, bi or transgendered (LGBT) people? At our November 28th board meeting, the St. Louis Section was fortunate to hear from Andrew Shaughnessy, St. Louis Field Organizer of PROMO, Missouri’s statewide organization advocating for LGBT equality. Andrew Shaughnessy discussed the PROMO mission to end discrimination and explained how NCJW members can advocate on behalf of the LGBT community. So what can you do? Tell the St. Louis County Council to end discrimination and that you will not tolerate bigotry against the LGBT community. For more information about how you can advocate for justice on behalf of the LGBT community, please contact PROMO at www.promoonline.org or (314) 862-4900.

saVE thE datE aNd JoiN usfor Lobby day!

If you have not had the opportunity to join the St. Louis Section on a Lobby Day trip to Jefferson City, this is your chance to be involved in an amazing NCJW experience. On April 18, 2012, NCJW’s Advocacy team is planning a Lobby Day and a chance for you to experience the energy and immediacy of being a part of the legislative process. Involvement in Lobby Day makes advocacy relevant on many levels. First, your presence alongside other members of NCJW in Jefferson City sends Missouri State Legislators a strong message of support about NCJW’s mission and projects. On a more personal level, the experience of standing with other NCJW women is a wonderful way to be connected and make your own voice matter in the legislative process. Finally, consider including a young friend, niece or daughter to join you on Lobby Day. Sharing this process with a young person is a great opportunity to mentor progressive values and activism. Pay it forward by teaching a young advocate how to make her voice count! NCJW provides transportation for the Lobby Day trip (a nominal $18 tax-deductible donation for the trip helps NCJW offset costs) and first-time advocates get an insider’s perspective of public policy-making teamed with experienced advocates for their Jefferson City visit. Bring a lunch and comfortable shoes as this is certain to be an educational and uplifting afternoon with NCJW making a difference in Jefferson City! For information, contact NCJW-St. Louis Section at 314-993-5181.

LuNCh & LEarN: thE huNt for Lost trEasurE

Many participants brought a lunch and enjoyed NCJW’s November 11, 2011 Lunch & Learn program featuring long-time NCJW member and author Linda Frank. She spoke about the process of developing her fascinating book, After the Auction. This is a compelling story about the hunt for lost art treasures stolen by the Nazis. Photographed at the program are: (L-R) NCJW-St. Louis Section President Farilyn Hale, VP of Fund Development Nanci Bobrow, Ph.D., author Linda Frank and her cousin and NCJW Board Member Abby Susman. Plan to attend the 2012 Lunch & Learn programs. Check the NCJW website calendar page regularly for updates on upcoming events at: www.ncjwstl.org.

bE Part of NCJW’s “a” List

“A” is for advocacy, a key component in NCJW’s mission to champion progressive change on behalf of women, children and families and we need your help to be effective advocates. Add your name to our series of full-page ads in the St. Louis Jewish Light and let our legislators know we care about the issues. NCJW will place these ads to inform and educate the Jewish community about issues that are supported by NCJW–St. Louis Section which include:

• Voter I.D.• Reproductive Rights• Health Care• Funding for Programs and Services for

Women, Children, and Families

Your donation of $54 will place your name in boldface as an “Advocate Plus” in the four ads. A donation of $18 will place your name as an “Advocate” in the four ads. Please reply on-line at www.ncjwstl.org (on the Advocacy page) by February 17th or call the NCJW office at 314-993-5181 with a credit card. mEEt NCJW VoLuNtEEr Kathy bErg

Each year, volunteer Kathy Berg donates a metaphysical reading party for eight to be auctioned at NCJW’s Trivia Night to help raise funds for NCJW. Not only is Kathy a skilled astrologer, numerologist, and reader of the Tarot, she is also an outstanding editor for NCJW’s quarterly bulletin. Her

ability to catch an awkward sentence or missing comma is spot on. Kathy decided to volunteer weekly at the St. Louis Section office to work with June Thomas, NCJW’s Office Manager helping with mailings, alphabetizing, and anything else. Kathy is very productive in the office. From her generous kindness to her eagle-eye policing of a document, Kathy Berg is an enormous help to NCJW. Her willingness to check, double-check and triple check editorial content for the NCJW Bulletin has made Kathy a good friend to staff and the St. Louis Section.

Join the Conversation! We are in the process of collecting your valuable feedback from NCJW-St. Louis Section membership. Please take a few minutes to fill out our new survey that we are sending out to membership. We want to hear from you and your input is important to us. The ongoing challenge for NCJW – St. Louis Section is to continue to meet our mission with timely and needed community service projects, progressive advocacy work and exciting membership opportunities. We work daily to ensure that the needs in

our community are being met using NCJW resources, volunteers and collaborations with funding partners. There are opportunities for services not addressed because of limited resources. It is the generosity of our members that will ensure NCJW’s ability to carry out our mission, now and in the future. In our 116-year history, generations of women have volunteered time and financial resources to ensure the continued health and visibility of the St. Louis Section. We read in the Talmud, “As my father planted for me, so I plant for my children.” These are the values that move NCJW forward and help us to do Tikkun Olam – to repair the world for our children and future generations. The NCJW Leadership Circle provides an opportunity to sow the seeds for the future of NCJW. Individuals become members when their annual cumulative gifts to NCJW St. Louis Section reach the $1,000 level. Members of the Leadership Circle are honored annually at a donor appreciation event. The NCJW Leadership Circle provides the means to ensure the future of the St. Louis Section. At any level, we ask that you give as generously as you can so that we may build a stronger foundation. We hope that you will consider joining the Leadership Circle. For additional information please contact Marissa Rosen, Development Associate, at 314-993-5181 or [email protected].

thE trio fouNdatioN of st. Louis

NCJW is thrilled to highlight The Trio Foundation of St. Louis thanks to the foundation for their support. The Trio Foundation of St. Louis is a family foundation, founded in 1990 by Dorothy Ross Moog. Dorothy Moog hoped the foundation would bring her closest family members together on a regular basis to pursue philanthropy while sharing the success that she and her husband Hubert “Hub” Moog achieved under his leadership at Moog Industries, an automotive manufacturing business. The

Trio Foundation prides itself on making grants that demonstrate a commitment to causes and organizations that help people and society with a focus on the St. Louis area. NCJW has been fortunate to receive support from The Trio Foundation of St. Louis for the Kids Community Closet program. Earlier this year, NCJW and Trio partnered to provide emergency relief to Airport Elementary School. This school, which participates in the Kids Community Closet program, was severely impacted by the April 22nd tornado. The emergency funds from The Trio Foundation allowed NCJW to completely restock the Kids Community Closet at Airport Elementary so that children in need would have access to clothing right away.
