By Chris TobinTo start a newspaper from scratch and to

make it a success is no mean feat but it is something Les and Katrina Whiteside have achieved with the Blenheim Sun.

And this week is a time for them to celebrate as the Sun, Marlborough’s biggest circulating newspaper, marks 10 years since it started.

Les says they arrived in Blenheim from Christchurch just over 10 years ago with just two objectives.

“We came for the lifestyle and to put out a weekly paper – nothing more.”

It helped that, as Les adds, they were passion-ate about newspapers.

Marlborough tap students will follow in the footsteps of many Broadway stars with their production of the iconic musical Annie.

More than 30 students from Vanessa Bryant studio of dance will perform in the school’s first musical tap production later this month.

The students have been working

hard with their teacher Vanessa Bryant, since late September for their November 10 performance date.

Only two shows will be done, one at 2.30pm and at 7pm on the Saturday at the Marlborough Civic Theatre.

Tickets available from the Civic Theatre.

Annie comes to town

Rheana McNabb, Kimberley Single, and Grace Eaton will perform as Mr Warbucks, Miss Farrel, and Annie respectively in their tap school's production on Annie.

By Robbie ParkesThe meaning behind Guy Fawkes

may fly over the heads of the younger generations, but by no means is the annual celebration losing its appeal.

“I don’t think it’s dying out, I think people have been more careful when it comes to Guy Fawkes,” said The Warehouse Blenheim manager Ian Daubney.

“A lot of people are choosing to go to the bigger organised shows.”

It is a safer environment for families, and kids still get the chance to play with sparklers, he said.

The retail giant is the predominant seller of fireworks in the region and are well stocked for the celebration.

There is huge demand for fireworks, said Ian, and from November 2nd to 5th it gets busy, as it is the only period they can sell them and people buy them for events later in the year too.

The store hands out leaflets and has the fire brigade do safety checks.

“We’re very very health and safety conscious.”

Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Rob Dalton said Guy Fawkes celebrations in the past has been reasonably quiet in Marlborough.

He said he would like to think people are becoming more safety conscious especially as people do seem to lean towards the organised displays.

“The fire service in the past has encouraged people to do that.”

He said, the Whitney St School display tends to be the big one that a lot of families go to.

Guy Fawkes popular as ever

Yesterday the Tui Club had a fantastic day visiting Waikawa Bay (left). It is Marlborough’s Out-door Playcentre, and the focus is on getting into the outdoors as much as possible.“We are there to support, protect, nourish and nur-ture, the children take us where they want to go,” said Jane Dowd, from the playcentre.Next week they will be going to Ballinger Park, and will meet at Blenheim Playcentre on Eltham Rd, 12 noon.

New Zealand Winegrowers, the national organisation for the country’s 1,500 grape growers and winemakers, announced yesterday the election of Steve Green as chair and John Clarke as deputy chair.

Mr Green is proprietor of Car-rick, a boutique Central Otago win-ery; he succeeds Stuart Smith of Marlborough who has stepped down after six years in the role.

CorreCtioN:The article and photo in The Sun

last Friday, October 28, featuring the Marlborough Guild of Woodworkers, described Vince Smith as the founding member of the guild.

This is incorrect, as he is in fact one of the founding members of the guild, which started in 1985.

Vince is currently vice-president.

Blenheim schoolgirl Clara van Wel has been named as one of five acts to go through to the next semi-final epsiode of talent show, New Zealand’s Got Talent.

In her last performance she sang her own composition and was deemed “a serious talent” by Ali Campbell.

It takes between about 11 and 15 seconds to sprint the length of a rugby pitch, and yes, Richie McCaw really does eat weetbix for breakfast every morning.

“Because it’s good tucker,” he told a group of fans at Stadium 2000 yesterday.

Four All Blacks were on a whirlwind visit to Blenheim, including Sam Whitelock, Owen Franks, and Julian Savea.

Landing at Blenheim Airport at 9.25am, they had attended morning tea at Blenheim Town Square, followed by a 30 minute sign-ing session at Stadium 2000, and were back at Blenheim Airport by 1pm.

Although time was tight, school children still enjoyed asking the boys in black a few questions; what pets they have, which mostly included dogs and one goldfish; what other jobs they have had, and how strong they were – they all agreed on about a 140kg bench press.

“It’s really awesome to have them here,” said Lily Parkinson, 7.

Maddix Brady thought it was cool getting all their signatures, and Domi Kula thought the All Blacks were really nice and cool.

“They don’t come to Blenheim that much, so it’s a really cool opportunity to see them,” said Thomas Loza, 9.

Finn Thompson, 11, gave Richie McCaw’s

Four All Blacks drop in

hand a good shake, and enjoyed catching up with his favourite player, Owen Franks.

“It’s my first time seeing them in real life,” he said.

“It’s only once in a lifetime that you see them like this, it’s awesome,” said Jesse Eising, 15.

The All Black visit was part of a nationwide provincial tour yesterday, to thank their fans.

The 32-man All Black squad for the Air New Zealand European Tour leaves on Thursday, and their first game is on November 11, against Scotland in Edinburgh.

it is smiles all around for domi Kula, 7, with owen franks and Julian savea.

New food staLLA new food stall will be operating

at the Redwood Flea Market and the Sunday Market as from Saturday. It will be the first time a food stall has been at the Redwood market in recent years, if at all. Bruce Weston and Peter Peterson will be cooking sausages and other tasty bbq goods, and serving scones with jam, pikelets etc from their caravan with the proceeds donated to the Marlborough Stroke Club.

Students from Witherlea School got the opportunity to hop on some vintage bi-cycles and have some fun on Tuesday, but also learn a bit of history.

Rod McCloy from the Marlborough Museum at Brayshaw Park enlightened the children on some of the old bikes, trikes and scooters their grandparents and great-grandparents might have used growing up.

The kids were given a chance to ride the bicycles, some dat-ing back to the 1950s.

Their teacher, Catherine Stringer said the children had been learning about the history of bicycles, how they progressed, and the safety aspects of them.

“It’s just making them aware,” she said.

“They learn more from hands on riding than sitting in a classroom.”

By Annabelle LatzDon Zimmerman is pleased his

campervan has been found. He received a phone call very soon

after an article was published in The Sun earlier this month about a camp-ervan he sold, but never received the full payment for.

The lady who rang him was the grandmother mentioned in the original article.

“She said it was the line in the story that talked about two boys living with their grandmother that tripped her up.”

She was not aware her son had not made the full payment for the Daihatsu Campervan that has been in her yard for nearly a year.

“She was horrified.”The woman’s son bought it for his two

sons to live in because he was going to

Australia. At the time he paid Don $2000 for

the deposit, and signed an agreement to pay the further $8000 as monthly installments.

But Don never saw another cent. After a run of bad health this year,

Don decided this month to see where his van was.

“Don’t trust anybody, you get to the stage where you think you know people, and then they beat you one.”

The woman has until Friday to get the $8000 from her son, to purchase the van outright.

“Hopefully the money will arrive,” said Don.

Otherwise, Don will have the camper-van onsold by the repossession agency.

“So far so good, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

The Marlborough Falcon Trust is proud to an-nounce that Sara and Napoleon, a pair of New Zealand falcon, have laid their first eggs.

These are the first eggs laid in the newly completed Brancott Estate Aviary.

Sara laid her first egg last Tuesday morning, and

NZ’s favourite bird is breeding

another egg on Thursday night, and one more on Saturday night.

This is a really exciting first step in the breeding process for these rare and threatened birds.

Falcons can lay between one and four eggs, and normal clutches generally contain two or three.

Eggs are incubated for 30 days. Females do most of the incubating, with males providing them with food and taking over when the females want a bathroom break and a stretch.

You can visit the Trust’s website to learn more about falcons www.mfct.org.nz

The trust’s facebook page also contains a video of Napoleon preparing the nest barrel for their eggs’ arrival facebook.com/Marlboroughfalcons

By Chris Tobin Karen McDonald and her

small dog Rye, were among a group of volunteers rec-ognised for their work with the SPCA in Marlborough on Friday.

For three years Karen and Rye have been visiting rest-homes, cubs, scouts and various community groups as part of their pet therapy programme where accord-ing to Karen, Rye is always hugely popular.

“He’s extremely popular and he never tires of his role,” she said.

Karen and the other volunteers were presented with Royal SPCA com-memorative medals by Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. A total of 1000 medals have been awarded around the country to cel-ebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Two Marlborough volun-teers Pat Ashton and Marilyn Hagen received their awards

at Government House in Wellington while Mr Sow-man presented 12 on Friday – the remaining recipients were unable to attend.

Mr Sowman said the SPCA had been working in Marlborough for 60 years and each year they cared for 1000 animals.

“We all know a measure of a society is how it treats its animals and that it reflects how we treat each other,” he said.

“I want to stress how much your work is valued and on behalf of the Marlborough community I thank you people for what you do.”

Among the recipients was Teresa Hawes of Picton who fostered many animals, particularly puppies. She said her daughter Grace, 11 helped her.

“Grace and I get the pup-pies and we socialise them with adults and children. We’ve been doing it for a couple of years.”

Located in a prime waterside location with breath taking views of the inner Picton Marina. Marina Cove offers independent apartment living.

The people who live here make good use of the village’s community centre – it includes a library, and craft, games and activity rooms – and enjoy all sorts of social functions together. A daily main meal can be bought from the kitchen, and residents frequently dine together.

And for peace of mind, the village operator is a Retirement Villages Association and New Zealand Aged Care Association member.

By Robbie ParkesConstruction of the Port Marlborough Pavilion

at Endeavour Park, Picton, is well underway, and potential users of the new facilities are being invited to express their interest this weekend.

The Endeavour Park Pavilion Society Inc is hosting an information afternoon at the Queen Charlotte Col-lege Gymnasium on Sunday to inform the public on what the new centre will offer sports and clubs in the area, said society chairman Graham Gosling.

“It’s virtually just to inform everybody at the stage where we’re up to and gauge the response from potential users.”

“It doesn’t matter if they have 10 members or 100 members, it’s a sports and community centre and we want to cater to that as much as we can.

“We’re just wanting to show what we can offer.”He said they want any interested organisation

to come along to find out how the development is progressing.

Graham said there has been a lot of interest, but it has all been in the preliminary stages.

“Now we need to start recording their interest and then we can talk to the various organisations on a one on one basis.”

He said they do not want to impede on other sports and community facilities in the area.

Blenheim construction firm TH Barnes has been undertaking stage one of the development, and is currently working on the second floor of the build.

The society still needs to raise $800,000 to begin stage two of the development which includes two squash courts and conference rooms.

“It’s the early stages in getting the jigsaw complete,” said Graham.

“Another consideration is to hopefully get a couple of tennis courts, which can also double as netball courts.

“And that’s not a very high cost at all, and as a complete venue it would be very good.”

He said the facility is expected to be complete by May 2013.

The information evening takes place at the Queen Charlotte College Gymnasium, Sunday November 4 from 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm.

By Annabelle LatzFrom tasting frogs to visiting

bustling markets, a visit to Shanghai was about much more than just fashion for Carolyn Taylor.

T h e 21 ye a r- o ld fo r m e r Marlborough Girls’ College student featured a selection of her garments at Shanghai Fashion Week earlier this month.

Currently studying fashion at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, the 21 year-old was one of six students from her course to attend the big event, which lasted nine days.

“It was all really inspiring,” she said.

She received great feedback about her garments, that were based around a ‘resort wear’ theme, featuring simple comfortable clothes.

She added elements of her own origami and jewellery as accessories.

As part of the trip, the students did a photo shoot, which took them to the suburbs and outer areas of Shanghai, which was a highlight for Carolyn.

“I thought it would be really crazy with lots of people, but it was quite laid back, everyone was really nice and understanding.”

The same message could not be expressed about the traffic.

“People didn’t indicate, and tooted all the time, honestly, they just kept tooting.”

The markets were busy.“They were really crazy, just

madness with so many people.”Due to the huge hospitality of the

Chinese people, Carolyn got to try all sorts of different food, including frog, snake, and jellyfish.

“I tried the frog, it was covered in spicy sauce, and was squishy and yuck. I didn’t try the jellyfish, but I heard it was like eating a rubber band.”

Back in Dunedin, Carolyn is concentrating on finishing off her pieces for her final year assessment, and then will start on some more drawings.

“And I want to have a crack at setting up my own business,” she said.

Q: How do you celebrate Halloween and Guy Fawkes?

readers have their say......The WORD on the street.Sun

Vicky HughesBlenheim

We like to celebrate Guy Fawkes with a couple of crackers and sparklers, but have to be mindful of animals as we live on a farm. Our children used to go to A&P park for the fireworks.

Jen ShieldsBlenheim

This year I’m taking my children trick-or-treating and also to their school disco. For Guy Fawkes we like to come into town and watch the fireworks display, otherwise we have our own at home.

Kelly JenkinsBlenheim

Some years we have sparklers for Guy Fawkes. We don’t do anything for Halloween.

Kieran JenkinsBlenheim

We don’t celebrate Halloween, but some years we celebrate Guy Fawkes with sparklers.

Madei Power & Ruby ReeveBlenheim

We’re going trick-or-treating for the first time this year all dressed up and we usually celebrate Guy Fawkes with some fire works at home.

For all your cleaning needs...Roger Nicholls 027 578 1163Dave Gardiner 027 4399 201

Dear EdI must point out that neither Tracy Johnston nor

Destination Marlborough had much to do with recent cruise ship volunteer welcome.

It was arranged due to the efforts of Margaret McHugh of Picton, and may there be more.

I for one will be joining shortly to provide a land-based short tours for passengers.

John Story

Dear Ed,With regards to your article Gerry

Hey and the airport building (Blenheim Sun, October 17), some years back, when a new airport building was proposed, Gerry suggested that the new building should be situated on the south side of the airfield.

Gerry arranged with the Air Force commander for an officer to accompany him and myself to the south side which would meet Air Force approval.

It was a very good site with plenty of room for expansion; the officer’s problem was that traffic from Middle Renwick Rd would have to cross the airfield.

Gerry and I agreed no problem to come in from New Renwick Rd.

We struck strong opposition from M.D.C.

We did some research: All airlines using the airport gave very strong approval for our suggestion, the Air Force gave approval, and the Police traffic department gave approval, stating that the present posed a traffic flow problem.

We presented this information to M.D.C and the Air Force commander both said the problem was that the millions of dollars for the new tarmac was prohibitive.

I did a little more research, and Fulton Hogan gave me a quote of $100,000 to do the tarmac, quoting that they had experience of Woodbourne Air Field.

On presenting this information to M.D.C and the commander I did not hear back from either, but M.D.C continued on with building on the old site, completely ignoring our research.

K Lawrence

Dear Ed Your correspondent D Greenslade says the number

of Air NZ flights does not justify the expense of a new terminal.

She seems concerned as to who will pay for it. I wonder who the “good authority” is that the

present terminal is big enough to handle all flights. I suggest Mrs/Ms Greenslade actually spends a day

at the terminal sometime and count the number of movements and witness the congestion.

As for paying for it - some years ago there was a need for Wellington to have a new terminal and there were similar concerns as to who would pay.

It was resolved when the users (the airlines) eventu-ally realised they needed it and coughed up.

Today is May Eve on nature’s calendar. It’s obvious Spring isn’t in the merry month of May

on our Southern Hemisphere topsy-turvy season-insensitive calender but, with poetic licence, “Sep-tember’s showers bring forth October’s flowers”.

The die-hards, misled by the commercial hype, will say it’s Halloween.

Surely it tells you something with pumpkins still at the seedling stage at present!

May Eve is Beltane or Flowering or Sap Rise and Whiringanuku for Maori.

Though it’s November 1st the following day it is May Day. But, whatever the month, in mid-Spring it’s traditional to celebrate.

And, so, this arthritic crone’s bones willing, it’ll be a few rounds of her poison of choice (purely medicinal, of course), followed by a few rounds of the Maypole, a jig or two and a bit of “here we go gathering nuts in May”.

Meantime - if you must - revel with care this ‘Halloween’.

Dear Ed It still amazes me how many drivers talk on their

cellphones while driving.Where are the traffic enforces when you want

them? While talking about the police, it was surprising

to see police cars driving around Blenheim during Labour Weekend.

Shouldn’t they be out on the highways and showing a presence to stop the speeding and accidents.

I wonder how many police cars were on the main highway between Kaikoura and Blenheim?

Labour of loveWednesday October 31, 2012

“The time has come,’ the Walrus said.”Tan said this with a confident smile, quoting

from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Tan and her husband Rob moved to Marlborough 37 years ago, as Rob was involved in the forestry industry.

Tan, who was studying a Bachelor of Arts degree extramurally, wanted something extra to do, to accompany her role as mother of two young boys Warren and Jaimie.

That was when she first became involved with the second hand bookshop.

Her knowledge of books was noticed when she would visit the shop on Charles St, which eventually landed her a job at the book exchange.

“Mrs Morris ran the book exchange then, and used to ask me for advice.”

Tan was then given the opportunity to manage it, and eventually bought it in 1989.

She bought a building on Charles St, which is now McRae’s Fashion.

“It was a buzzy place.”Her shop is now on Scott St, after Tan sold

the building on Charles St 10 years ago.“I have run it as a lifestyle, it’s a busy little

business.”But life will not be slowing down for Tan.Their vineyard they live on at the end of

Dog Point Rd keeps them occupied, as do their grandchildren.

“I’ve always done a little bit of writing, so who knows, and I might have time to smell the roses.”

Tan, the oldest of eight children, said it was her mother’s passion for books that rubbed off.

Tan’s full name is Tanith, a Mesopotamian name, after a goddess of war and love.

Her character features in one of the earliest epics, originally written on stone in 612BC.

“When I was a kid I didn’t want to be named after any old goddess, so I said I was named after a race horse.”

Tan held a newer version of it in her own library at home, which she described as her “heaven.”

“Once I get up here I love it, I’ve got some lovely old books.”

Tan has made some great friends through those seeking treats and treasures amongst her bookshelves.

“I have found books that people have looked for years, I love that.”

“There’s lots of nostalgic stuff,” said Tan. Tan was recently sorting through some

belongings of her own children’s, and came across two favourite childhood books - The

Diggingest Dog and Lambert the Sheepish Lion.

“I read these to my grandkids too.”Among Tan’s favourite authors are Diana

Gabaldron and Dorothy Dunnett, both authors of huge integrity, extremely well researched and travelled.

“There is powerful intellect, it’s addictive.”Tan and Rob have recently returned from

a trip to Europe, and loved visiting places in France and Spain which she had read about through her favourite authors.

“Through all my reading I used to read about it, so I felt a sense of deja-vu. There

was a connection for me that nobody else would have had.”

Along with the bookshop, the brewery has also kept work life busy and interesting, which was also started in 1989.

“I had this huge shop, and breweries and distilleries were just starting in New Zea-land. I thought it might be a way to pay the mortgage.”

“It involves anything that ferments or distills - cheese making, essential oils, soap making, and beer.”

Her business, as she described as a ‘labour of love,’ has always been ‘a lot of fun.’

Tan McNabb’s passion for literature has been shared with many, and now its time to go. She speaks to Annabelle Latz about her decision to sell Still Books at Tan’s Place.

“You can make really outstanding friends

through books.”

In her own slice of heaven: Tan McNabb wil l be spending more time at home amongst her own books soon, after 37 years’ involvement with the second hand book trade.Tan was also featured on the front page of our second ever edition on November 12, 2002.

CHEERS: The Sun team from left, reporters Annabelle Latz, Celeste Lodewyk, publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside, receptionist Aynsley Carrick, classified sales Maree Perano, sales Chloe Honour, sales Jill Wood, production Karyn Nally, reporter Chris Tobin, Office Manager Jill Sutherland-Kennard. Front; production Matt Brown and reporter Robbie Parkes.

A decade of

Continued from page 1And 10 years on they believe the Sun is

doing an excellent job, truly connecting with the community having become a ‘must read’ all over Marlborough.

The paper has an official ABC audited circulation of 18,700 copies.

“We’re astounded people come in 10 years later and say ‘it’s a great paper,’” says Katrina. “It’s been amazing; the satisfaction is huge.”

In all his long career with newspapers (over 30 years) and all the papers he has owned and worked on, Les says the Sun has stood out for having the strongest response from readers and advertisers.

“It comes back to the public reading it and reading every page. From a business point of view and community involvement this paper has been the most successful.”

The biggest change in the 10 years came when the paper went twice weekly earlier

this year.“We didn’t envisage going twice weekly

but when you get a major client saying go twice weekly, you do,” says Les.

Katrina thinks it’s the best thing they have done since starting the paper.

“It’s great. I heard someone say they look for the babies (photos) on Wednesdays and the text talk on Friday.”

A major highlight for Les and Katrina over the 10 years has been the many friend-

ships they’ve made with business people in Marlborough and with members of the public.

Keeping local people in jobs has been important to them too.

They’re delighted the paper is expanding at a time when the newspaper industry both in New Zealand and worldwide is retracting.

“The paper is the result of team effort and we have had some terrific staff during the 10 years,” says Les.

10 years: Let’s celebrate!

with the Sun. I met Les before he arrived and the

concept seemed to fit. I thought there was a shortfall

in the media industry and the Sun offered flexibility.

Advertising with the Sun has been very good for us and the the success of the paper is shown through the

advertisers. It has found a place in the market

and gone from strength to strength. I like contact with locals and Les

I wish them and the paper all the best for the future.”Craig McDermid, Managing Director and CEO Toyota Blenheim

“Their success has been our success,” says Pam McCormick.

Pam and Ray McCormick have advertised with the Blenheim Sun ever since they took over their jewellery business in Blenheim nearly seven years ago.

“Les and Katrina have helped us in the best way to establish our business,” said Pam.

“I’ve had a monthly column with them for six years and for brand aware-ness it’s the best advertising we’ve had for our business.”

Ray said due to the way the paper was presented, it was very readable.

“It has been a very enjoyable relation-ship over the years and we congratulate them on their achievement,” said Ray.

When it comes to loyal advertisers it’s hard to go past Cresswell’s shoe shop at 71 Market Street.

Right from the first issue of the Blenheim Sun 10 years ago, owners Keith and Jacquelene Sandford have advertised every week apart from once according to Keith when there was some glitch in the system.

“I‘ve found I really got on well with them” said Keith.

“ I like a certain layout and keep it the same and the Sun have allowed me to do that and if I want, I can

make changes quickly and easily. “They do it the way I want it, not

the way they want it.” Keith and Jacquelene took over

Cresswells in 1987 but the business dates back to August 1947 and was based originally in Maxwell Rd.

“Over the years we’ve gone out of stocking children’s shoes,” said Keith.

“We have women’s and men’s and a small amount of sports shoes but we’ve enlarged our ladies bags section and we still do repairs.”

With the arrival of The Ware-house in town Keith said they decided to move more into top brands and mid-range priced shoes.

“The public are aware we know what we are talking about and we care about our customers.

“It’s all about our service. We don’t try and sell just to make

a sale. “We’ve got a huge following.” And advertising in the Blenheim

Sun over 10 years has definitely helped.

BIRTHDAY TO THE SUN!

PROUD BUILDERS OF THE SUN OFFICES

Congratulations to Katrina and Les for

REACHING this milestone, a decade in business

Sally Cook’s friends and family have good reason to look through the window of The Sun office as they pass by.

They will see Sally smiling back at them.

The 10 year-old Blenheim resident was born the same day The Sun had its first publication, November 5, 2002.

Her fifth birthday celebration is what honours the wall behind the front desk, for everyone to see when they come into the Sun office.

“It doesn’t seem like five years ago,” said Sally, who remembers she was just finishing kindergarten.

When friends from out of Blenheim come to visit, she always tells them to go past The Sun window.

“And when we walk past we always wave in too,” she said.

Sally’s mum Ange remembers the very special occasion the day Sally was born.

“All these fireworks lit up the sky when I was wheeled back to my room at Wairau Hospital, for Guy Fawkes celebration.

But it felt like our very own celebration,” she said.

The Sun’s birthday girl

Sally Cook, pictured with her mum Ange, turns 10 years old on November 5, the same day that The Sun celebrates a decade as the most read community newspaper in Marlborough.

Right from the first issue on November 5, 2002, the Blenheim Sun has been out there in the community telling your stories and filling the pages with photos aplenty of Marlburians.

So what was in that first is-sue? The front page lead was a story about a new partnership being formed between Destination Marlborough and the Marlborough District Council to promote the region.

Then as you begin turning the pages you quickly get the impres-sion that there were lots of photos of locals.

Heaps of them. And our regular features Out and About, Babies and the One on One profile were there also.

We profiled Mark Peters, the well

known chartered accountant who said of Blenheim, “they’ll have to cart me out fighting.” He’s still here.

The mayor of the time Tom Har-rison featured also and he talked of a possible steam train running between Blenheim and Kaikoura as a tourist attraction.

That hasn’t happened but it re-mains a good idea.

Perhaps one for the future. Others who were prominent in

that first issue were Jackson’s Es-tate winery owner John Stichbury and sporting couple Brian and Dorothy Fitzpatrick.

These are just some of the locals in that first issue.

Yes you can safely say that right from the outset, the Sun was a real ‘people paper’.

It still is.

“Amazing how it all comes together,” says the man who co-ordinates delivery of the Blenheim Sun, Chris Nally.

At 5.30pm each Tuesday and Thursday the Blenheim Sun is sent to our printers Guardian Print in Ashburton.

After being printed, and a five hour road trip from Ashburton, the papers arrive in Blenheim around 4am and this is where Chris steps in.

He completes his main job as a baker and then picks up all the bundled newspapers, loads them into the Sun van.

His first drop off is to the rural mail deliverers and then to the team of 70 deliverers in Blenheim and Renwick.

Others bound for Picton and Havelock he takes to the couriers for delivery.

His team of 70, he says, can be “quite fluid” especially around school holiday time.

But he has his loyal deliverers like Robert Austin who has been delivering the Sun around Redwoodtown for all of the paper’s 10 year history.

Amber Shaw delivers around the business area of Blenheim and has been doing it for nine years.

And there are others too like Nola Neal and Peter Hoosen.

These are just some of Chris’s dedicated team delivering the Sun, winter or summer, rain or shine week in, week out.

Chris says there have been some

interesting moments – like the time half the papers were sent to Motueka.

Or the time the delivery truck was held up by slips outside Kaikoura, or the time the forklift broke down and they had to hand-load the bundles of copies off the truck.

“Little things like that happen in every business I guess,” he says.

Dave Rees (painter) advertises in the Blenheim Sun’s trades and services page and has done for four years.

“It’s an important part of my business, and because of the position I have in the paper it works for me,” says Dave.

He wishes the Blenheim Sun well on its anniversary.

Small ads workThe well known electrical company Callahan &

Martella has run a small advertisment in the Sun every week since the paper started.

So what drew them to the Sun?“Being locally owned and operated was important

for us,” said owner Ian Martella. “I’m from a very old Marlborough family and

I believe what comes around goes around in a business sense.

It’s been good advertising with The Sun and we’ve had positive feedback about it.”

Celebrating 10 years

The stories in the Sun are obviously a crucial factor in its popularity.

“While we don’t shrink from hard news stories, we do try to focus on good news,” says Les.

There is also enormous effort made into fitting as many local stories and photos of local people as possible into its pages.

Right from the first issue the baby page has proved to be hugely popular. Out and About, a page of pho-

tographs of local people taken by our photographers at the weekends, is also enjoyed by many read-ers while Text Talk on Fridays has quickly built up a strong following. The letters to the editor, or ed as we call him, are always a must read.

Les is not a believer in regular columns, saying surveys done on other papers have shown they are read only by a small percentage of readers.

The one exception was the work of the late Ken Berry. Love him or hate him, says Les, the usually humorous, often quirky and sometimes hard-hitting columns from Ken were written by a master of the English language.

They inspired what is best described as quite a bit of interaction with the newspaper and Les says Ken’s death has left a gap that “we are unlikely ever to fill.”

What’s in the Sun?

Today, you see the first of several small changes in the appearance of The Sun.

The masthead (our banner head-line) has been modernised, to have more impact. (Les’s threat to rename us The Bugle at the same time came to nothing, we are glad to report!)

The Wednesday edition will be known as the “Wednesday Sun” with the front page having the

same look as the hugely popular Friday edition.

Guardian Print in Ashburton are printing the Sun for our Birthday issue today using a heatset process which means the paper will have even clearer, higher quality pho-tographic reproduction.

There will also be other more subtle changes in the typefaces used and in the way stories are laid out.

New look Wednesday Sun issue

Ken Berry

The Sun’s original circulation of 15,000 copies has grown to nearly 19,000 copies twice weekly.

They are delivered to homes and businesses throughout the region. (That’s delivered into letter boxes, as opposed to being thrown on the street.)

Les and Katrina are sure this delivery method is deeply ap-preciated by householders.

The Sun has also put newspaper

stands into Picton Fresh Choice, Springlands Countdown, New World Blenheim, Seddon Su-pervalue and many shop dairys.

Les has been monitoring these stands and has found he needs to refill throughout the week.

An important part of the Sun’s circulation is our rural delivery contractors who ensure the Sun is delivered into the rural ar-eas on a Wednesday and Friday morning.

We get the papers to the rural mail deliverers first to ensure same day delivery, they do an excellent job for us says Les.

Town deliveries are handled by adults and school children on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Some adult deliverers are up at 6am waiting to deliver The Sun.

Les says these people are a huge asset to the Sun team.

Without them The Sun would not be as successful.

Keeping

on the move

What I have enjoyed about the Blenheim Sun newspaper is how well it’s put together, lots of local content to enjoy. The time and effort everyone puts into it and the fact that it’s free and is out twice a week is a big bonus. I thoroughly enjoy the Sun and am sure to check that letter box each Wednesday and Friday.

Thanks for everything.S.Michaels.

I have enjoyed many things with the Sun newspaper over the past 10 years, but the most important is that 5 years ago you posted on the back wall of your reception area a big photo of my daughter Sally, who will also be turning 10 on the 5th of November this year… our fam-ily always waves to her when we drive past the Sun office… keep up the good work!Cook Family.

Thank you all sooooo much for 10 wonderful years of news and views. You have done a fantastic job of keeping Marlborough informed with accurate snippets and feature articles. Not only has it come free to our mailbox but we have been able to keep ourselves up to date while overseas through your online version. All the best for the next 90 years and your telegram from the King/Queen!Chris Downs

telegram from the King/Queen!

First of all congratulations

on reaching 10 years. I really like your paper,

and getting it twice a week is

awesome. One of your reporters came

to interview my husband and

he made an excellent job.

I would recommend him to

anyone. Your articles are very

very interesting. Keep up the good work.

Happy birthday to you dear Sun newspaper, Happy birthday to you all. What a great little paper. I so enjoy the day it arrives.

I pore over all the articles whilst having my morning coffee. I cut out helpful hints and recipes and they get posted to my two daughters in Australia. This week I cut out the spring cleaning tips and I am off to clean my windows with vinegar. Thanks so much, I would hate not to have ‘The Sun’.

Elaine Willis (Great Grandma).

To the Sun ‘10th Birthday’. I enjoy the ‘Sun’ because there are more stories than advertisements. I respect your courage on the occasion (some years ago) when you ran reports of people being ‘fined’ (by a policeman) for going too slow when there were legiti-mate circumstances and then ‘the police’ withheld giving you the reports of incidents to include in your paper!! (for a while). Also I appreciate the list of death notices as sometimes I don’t always get the daily paper. Keep up the good re-porting. Sincerely Gloria Romano.

The Sun’s arrival lifted the standard of the free papers in Blenheim.

It has good articles on people and what is happening in town.

A feature I particularly enjoy is the ‘out & about’ section.

Kind regards, Diane Corkett

Dori-Ann BemontI think that it’s really informative of local

news and it has a great, easy layout and plenty of bold colours.

My favourite page is ‘The word on the street’; it’s nice to see local opinions on cur-rent issues.

The event guide is handy to plan our week-ends around.

We moved from Zimbabwe to Blenheim about 16 months ago and there wasn’t any-thing like the Sun over there.

It’s also my birthday on the 5th of November so happy birthday Sun.

Brian HutchisonIt’s very good as far as I’m con-cerned. I like that it’s a local paper and covers what is hap-pening around Marlborough and what our local Marlburians are achieving.

John ThomsonI like that it’s a nice easy read. I’m originally from Christchurch, so reading about the local history around Marlborough is really helpful and interesting. I’m also a big fan of the weekly crosswords.

Dear Katrina & Les,We would like to thank you so much for the last ten

years since The Sun has been in business. The Bride of the Year Show has been such a success

in our community, this has been helped due to your total commitment and support throughout these years

Selling tickets, advertising, promoting and attend-ing the show plus the fabulous photos taken for the brides to purchase.

This last year you even introduced your own prize for Miss Photogenic this shows your total commit-ment to this annual show.

Your commitment to the local community with raising funds for all different charities is amazing as with the bride of the year show in the ten years we have raised over $51 thousand dollars with the money staying in Marlborough.

We from Beavertown Blenheim Lions cannot thank you enough for your dedication.

May your newspaper continue with your two great editions each week and a big thank you from us.Carol Taylor and Beavertown Blenheim Lions

As a newcomer to Blenheim I felt lost and confused. The Sun came into my letterbox.I began to feel more at home as I looked at the pictures of happy people and read the news of people enjoying themselves in this community which was quite unfamiliar to me. There was plenty of bad news elsewhere. In no time The Sun helped to make me feel at home.Long may it continue, my favourite paper of the week.Happy tenth birthday to The Sunfrom Marygold Miller

The Blenheim Sun will publish twice weekly

starting on Friday March 9.

Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside see this

as an exciting time, to provide Marlborough

readers with a second edition as well as the

popular Wednesday paper.

Advertising support has continued to grow for

the Blenheim Sun over the last 12 months and

the demand from advertisers for a Friday paper

has been the driving force to go twice weekly.

Les says the encouragement and support from

major advertisers is just fantastic, particularly

in this economic climate.

However he believes the Marlborough public/

readers who have continued to support the Sun

paper is the main reason why it is so successful

for advertisers.

“We believe this move also shows our confi-

dence in the region,” says Les.

Last week the ABC Audit Bureau of NZ re-

leased its yearly newspaper circulation numbers.

“The Sun is now the number one circulated

newspaper in the region with 18701 copies,

this compared to the Marlborough Express

8077 ANC”

“The Express suffered another sizable de-

crease in circulation, similar to last year,” says

Les.“The new Friday Sun edition will be similar to

Wednesday, but with a few surprises,” he says.

Grout is a very porous material and is rarely sealed when new so it starts to absorb dirt and bacteria from day one. In no time it starts to looks dirty and unsightly, no matter how long you spend on your knees trying to scrub it clean. To make it worse, the wrong type of cleaners could cause more damage!

However, Marlburians can now forget endless, pointless scrubbing, as Blenheim locals Darryl and Cecilia Norman have just started up GroutPro (Marlborough) Ltd. They are part of a team of franchisees throughout New Zealand and Australia.

“GroutPro is the only business in New Zealand specialising in tile and grout restoration and we offer a cost effective solution to making your tiles and grout look brand new again” says Darryl and Cecilia. “It costs only a small proportion of the price to restore tiles than to replace them”.

“We are delighted to be able to offer the people of Marlborough this unique service. Our previous experience in the flooring industry combined with intensive GroutPro training has provided us with a good grounding with which to start our new venture.

One of the biggest drawcards for us was to be able to see what a huge difference our services can make to the appearance of tiled areas in a home.”

Their product range and services include a breathable, topical sealer called Colourseal, unique in New Zealand, which repels dirt, oils and water and will prevent your grout from restaining for up to 15 years. This is applied to grout lines after a deep and thorough clean with specialist products and equipment and offers a range of 89 different colours.

“It looks fantastic once it is applied, truly making your grout lines look like new again and as it repels dirt and oils – no more scrubbing!!!” If you are building a new home with tiled areas, Coloursealing the grout as part of the build finish is high recommended.

If you are selling your home and want to give all the tiled areas a like new appearance, give Darryl and Cecilia a call. Fabulous kitchens and bathrooms sell houses and the GroutProl process could increase the value of your home and help you clinch the deal!

The Blenheim Sun will publish twice weekly

starting on Friday March 9.

Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside see this

as an exciting time, to provide Marlborough

readers with a second edition as well as the

popular Wednesday paper.

Advertising support has continued to grow for

the Blenheim Sun over the last 12 months and

the demand from advertisers for a Friday paper

has been the driving force to go twice weekly.

Les says the encouragement and support from

major advertisers is just fantastic, particularly

in this economic climate.

However he believes the Marlborough public/

readers who have continued to support the Sun

paper is the main reason why it is so successful

for advertisers.

“We believe this move also shows our confi-

dence in the region,” says Les.

Last week the ABC Audit Bureau of NZ re-

leased its yearly newspaper circulation numbers.

“The Sun is now the number one circulated

newspaper in the region with 18701 copies,

this compared to the Marlborough Express

8077 ANC”

“The Express suffered another sizable de-

crease in circulation, similar to last year,” says

Les.“The new Friday Sun edition will be similar to

Wednesday, but with a few surprises,” he says.

Ladies Challenge Trophy:

Challenge Trophy: Won by David Watson – Ryan Windleburn.

This event has been played for the last 30 years and a rematch will take place early next year in Nelson.

Queen Charlotte Yacht Club’s first High Performance Clinic of the season finished up with a lot of very tired but enthusiastic Optimist and Starling sailors.

Club jun ior convenor and coaching co-ordinator, Ben Cowley, pronounced the weekend clinic as a great success and said the young sailors were very keen for the next one.

Yachting New Zealand sent down down one of their top coaches, Jim Maloney, to run the two day Starling Clinic for the teenage sailors.

Yachting New Zealand’s support for Queen Charlotte Yacht Club in running the free clinic is a great boost for the growing Starling Fleet and gives a great early season lead up to the Starling National Championships being held in Picton during the April

school holidays 2013.The younger Optimist sailors

had Briar Dye-Hutchinson from Auckland to put them through their paces over three days.

Picton Harbour was very busy on Saturday morning with Club Coach Neeta Cameron running a large Learn to Sail course and Green Fleet training alongside the High Performance Clinic

The sailors enjoyed a mixture of conditions over the weekend from strong, gusty winds on Saturday to much lighter conditions on Sunday.

Monday was Southerly and a little chilly but great sailing conditions all day.

The Clinic is timely preparation for the Nelson Marlborough Regional Championships being held next weekend in Nelson.

Last Thursday night, week two of Marlborough Volleyball’s FairWeathers’ Senior Summer League got underway at Stadium 2000.

Action from Premier grade saw Treefellas lose their first game going down in all 3 sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 against MBC but staying in touch throughout.

In their second match, Treefellas played a double-header against Kinoaths which saw a lot of see-sawing as both teams fought for supremacy.

Treefellas took the game three sets to nil, 25-20, 26-24, 25-16.

First game up in C grade saw MBC Junior A players all combining well and running away with the early set 25-16 against Smashed ‘Em Bro.

MBC Junior A had the game in the bag, winning the final two sets 25-22 and 25-19.

Westmeat Geriatrics are their equal on points with a 3 set win over MIA 25-9, 25-10, 25-17.

In the other 2 games both Safe Crackers and Desperate Housewives served well and were engaged in some good rallies by their opponents Wolf Pack and team Fresh and each secured maximum points from their 3 set wins. Safe Crackers 25-17, 25-16, 25-23. Desperate House-wives scored 25-17, 25-10 and 25-11.

The wins puts these two teams in 2nd equal place on the points table.

The A-Team collected the Fairweathers’ Fair Play Team of The Week Award.
