Dear Parents and Students

At last week’s Mass we warmly welcomed nearly 50 special guests – “our most senior Past Pupils” – those who graduated from Loreto 50 or more years ago. It was such a privilege and a pleasure to have them with us. Special thanks to those of them who travelled long distances to be here. We thank them all for their presence and their companionship in sharing their stories. These stories, are marvellous; they are such an important part of our heritage. We especially rejoiced to have with us Mrs Erica Stewart (nee Binnington) who was the 14th pupil to ever be enrolled at Loreto. What a special privilege this was for our girls to meet her and speak with her. I par cularly wish to thank the gracious student leaders and the class members of 8 Red for making these ladies so very welcome. Some of those invited were saddened to be unable to a end but they sent in some deligh ul le ers of warmth and fond memories and well wishes to the students of today. Let us hope that they can join us next year.

Gap Medics – Launching Australian Medical Careers – January 2013 The annual Gap Medics Australian Student Program is back on 6th January 2013, a unique work placement for pre-medical students from years 11, 12 and beyond to gain relevant medical experience on an amazing and fully supported placement to Tanzania or India. Year 11 TAFE study options 2013 Southbank Institute of Technology and Metropolitan South Institute of Technology have released their 2013 Schools Program Guides. If your daughter is considering studying a TAFE course as part of their Senior Schooling studies it is important to access these Guides and research the available options. \gV axãá Online Parent Portal (Parent Lounge) – How to reset a forgotten password

Parent Lounge is an online portal which also allows parents to view the college calendar, gives links to important school sites eg. the Loreto Facebook page as well as allowing viewing of a student’s reports. As time goes by, we will be adding more functionality to this portal and encouraging parents to use it more frequently. If you have forgotten or misplaced your password you can easily obtain another one by following the instructions below: From the Quick Links menu on the College website (www.loreto.qld.edu.au) choose Staff, Student, Parent Services. Then click on Parent Lounge. The login screen appears as below and as you can see on the bottom right there is a ‘Forgotten Password’ link which you can click on. `âá|v axãá Percussion Ensembles – All members of Percussion Ensembles please take careful note of these CHANGED QCMF PERFORMANCE TIMES. These changes have been made to avoid clashes with other commitments over the weekend so hopefully everyone will now be available to perform. Percussion Ensemble 2 will arrive at 9:09 am for a 9:50 am performance in section PE1B Group 1. Percussion Ensemble One will arrive at 12:33 pm for a 1:14pm performance in section PE1B Group 2. Please note that while this is actually a B Grade section but we will still be adjudicated by A Grade standards. An amended performance schedule for all Loreto groups is attached to this newsletter.

Mt Carmel Fete – Could all members of Exit Stage Left and Sorelle please meet Mr Langford at the Norfolk Street entrance to the school (near the playground) at 9:45 am this Sunday? Exit Stage Left – please wear jeans with your own choice of sleeved top (NO sleeveless tops). Sorelle – please wear black tour uniform as we did for the Crackerjack Festival.

Concert Band One Assembly performance – All members of Concert Band One are reminded that we will be perform-ing on Assembly on Wednesday 8 August (next week) so you will need to arrange to bring your instruments and music to school on that day.

Band Slam – Congratulations to the three bands – Big Blue House, The Rings and the De-railed Trains – who performed in the Loreto Music Festival Band Slam final on Friday. We had a great crowd in the the MWC Arena to witness three fantastic performances. In a tight decision, The Rings were awarded first place and will have their name forever engraved on the inaugural Band Slam Perpetual Trophy.

Extended rehearsals - In order to give some of our largest ensembles the best possible chance of performing to their potential at QCMF, we will be extending the rehearsal finishing times for Concert Band One, Concert Band Two and Senior Choir over the next two weeks to 5:30 PM. These extended rehearsals have been flagged in the school calendars all year. We have just had up to eight weeks between rehearsals for some of these groups so I would ask that all students make themselves available. Specific dates are as follows: Senior Choir – Tuesdays 31 July & 7 August, Concert Band One – Thursdays 2nd and 9th August, Concert Band Two – Fridays 3rd and 10th August. QCMF Uniform expectations – All music ensemble students will be performing at QCMF in a few week’s time. The college’s uniform expectations are very simple – all groups, except guitars, perform in regular school uniform with navy blue stockings (not socks). Blazers and school pullovers may be worn on the day for warmth but will be left in the warm-



up area and not actually worn on stage. Guitar Ensembles will wear black pants (not jeans), plain black button-up, collared shirt with ¾ or full length sleeve (no short sleeves), black socks or stockings and black shoes. Guitarists may also wear their own choice of coloured scarf.

QCMF Helpers – The Catholic Colleges Music Festival is a huge event and a key date in the yearly Loreto performance calendar. It is run and staffed entirely by volunteers from the Villanova community as a service to our Queensland Catholic community. However, it has grown so large that they have again this year asked for assistance. Any parents or senior students who are able to help for even a single 3-4 hour shift over the weekend would be very appreciated! You will not be asked to do anything complicated or be in charge of running any venue/area, simply operate a BBQ, move gear backstage, sell tickets and programs etc. If you would like to help and support this fantastic event that offers our students so much, then you can register on the Villa Music website: http://www.vnc.qld.edu.au/Music/index.htm

Missing guitars - As expected the guitar that has been missing this week has now been returned. However, another instrument, belonging to Lauren Hocking, has been taken by mistake. This one is in a soft black case and the folders inside the case are named. c 9 Y axãá Years 8 - 10 Dance ‘Safari Around the World’ is the theme for the dance which will be held on Saturday August 25,

from 7.00pm - 10.00pm. This dance is sure to be a lot of fun for our younger students. We need adult supervision so please consider helping by completing the roster attached to the newsletter. Your assistance is valued by your daughters as it makes the night able to run smoothly. Profits are going to the Sports Support Group and the Music Support Group to assist their costs. exáxtÜv{ cÜÉ}xvà Coping with Emotional Problems Researchers at Monash University and the University of Queensland will be conducting the final phase of the three year research project, entitled Coping with Emotional Problems, which started in 2010 at your child’s school. This research project will investigate the emotional health and well-being of Australian adolescents and inform prevention and early intervention programs designed to enhance the quality of life of Australian adolescents.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform parents who gave consent for their child to participate in this project last year that the researchers will be coming to the school shortly to administer the same questionnaire completed by these students last year. Only students with parent consent at time one of the study will be allowed to complete the question-naire this year, during school hours, with other participating children from their school. Please contact your school if you wish to look though a copy of the questionnaire.

To thank your children for their participation so far, we would also like to offer participating children from each school the chance to win a $25 JB Hi-Fi gift voucher or an iPod shuffle. One voucher will be available to win at each school and will be randomly awarded on the day the questionnaire is administered.

Soccer Rd 8 Finals: This Week’s Draw Open A, Open B and Junior A play at away venues, while Junior B plays at home. Open A team play Mt Alvernia at North Star Soccer Club, Jennings Street, Zillmere. Open B team play against Stuartholme at Bowman Park, David Ave, Off Simpson Rd, Bardon. Junior A team play Lourdes Hill at Easts Football Club, Heath Park, Hilton St, East Brisbane. Junior B team play Our Lady’s College at Annerley Soccer Club, Victoria Terrace, Annerley (Elder Oval – over the road from the Bowls Club). Please note that all draws and results can be found on www.bsgsa.sportingpulse.net For the away games, could parents please be ready to pick up students when the bus arrives between 5:30-5:45pm (depending on traffic). A bus will take students to Annerley for the home games (finish at 5:00pm) but students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles. This week students have been asked to bring a change of clothes so that uniforms can be collected at the end of the match. Soccer Results Rd 7: 25 July OPEN B The Open B team played Stuartholme at Bardon. A great effort by all players, even though we were beaten, 3 -1. Although the team were minus a few players due to illness and were beaten, everyone played their best and had fun! We look forward to the finals next week. Michael Kelly - Coach

OPEN A It was a tough week for the Open A's with a defeat of 2 - 1 to Mt Alvernia on Monday. Following this, the team lost four players through injury and sickness. The team fielded ten players against a strong All Hallows’ team however and were able to win, posting a 1-0 victory. Let’s hope the team can reverse last week’s score and win the premiership against Mt Alvernia in the final. Jess McLean - Coach

OPEN ONE – MATCH REPORT This week we came up against a full strength Brigidine side and right from the first whistle, it promised to be a challenging game. Play was fast with quick passes and regular displays of spurious stick-work. It was great to see Georgia Hillas back in our forward line this week after we released her from Loreto Open A to play for the lesser known Queensland Under 21 Hockey team. She had a fantastic match for us, sitting up high and making the Brigidine backline's life very difficult. After a cutting run past the halves and fullbacks, Georgia let fly with a blistering hit from the top of the circle which found the back of the net with a convincing thud. The match ebbed and flowed from one end to the next, but unfortunately Brigidine capitalised more when the ball was in their attacking zone and they bagged four goals over the two halves. Despite the 4-1 loss, our girls put up a great fight. Lauren Welch in particular had a great game and handled herself well against some aggressive defence and Ellen Carey did an admirable job marshalling our defence and clearing the ball when the chips were down. OPEN TWO – MATCH REPORT Loreto Two convincingly defeated Mt St Michael’s Two 6 – 0. The girls got off to a great start with Tyler Kilvington sneaking one past the opposition’s keeper after only a few minutes. Other goal scorers included Tahlia Simms (3), Leah

HOCKEY COORDINATOR’S REPORT This week was the last of the qualifying rounds for the BSGSA competition. A loss for Loreto One this week has meant the team has slipped from second to fourth place in the competition and will play Mt Alvernia in the final round for third/fourth. Loreto Two has kept its fifth rank with a stunning win this week and will play San Sisto College in the final for fifth/sixth place. Best wishes to both teams in the final game for the season. There has been no contact over the break regarding a replacement turf hockey competition for the NAB Cup. At this stage further training is suspended. Alan Lane-Richardson - Hockey Coordinator

Netball This Week’s Draw: Round 8 Wednesday 1 August

Results: Rd 7 - 25 July Open A won 29 to 13 against St Rita’s. The girls had a strong win this week, which was pleasing to see with the Vicki Wilson Cup competition just around the corner. (Monday August 6th at MDNA courts Coorparoo) Any available parents are most welcome to come and cheer us along on the day. Player of the match on Wednesday was Alannah Jeffcoat who put in a strong and consistent performance. Special mention should also go to Annie Passingham who attacked the post with confidence and shot with accuracy. Kristen Feurriegel had her best game of the season and is to be commended for her defensive rebounding and quick reflexes. Stephanie Esprester demonstrated adaptability in playing a range of positions capably. In summary, the girls put in a cohesive team effort to secure a win. Well done! Coach: Meg Logan Open B team played St Rita's and we lost 28-21. It was a close game all the way through. Well played Rebekah in the centre court and nice shooting for the first time Mary-Kate. Last training for the year is next week. Coach: Karen Holahan Open C have demonstrated their strength as a team yet again this week coming out with a very convincing win. Continu-ing to develop their skills, the girls showed great strength in defence the whole way down the court putting on the pressure to get turnovers. Great transitions saw Emily Smallhorn, Maddy Blanchfield and Olivia Mastry bringing the ball down court smoothly allowing the attacks to time themselves properly and continue the ball flow down to the shooters. Coach: Larissa Hughes Intermediate A team played a hard game against Mt St Michael’s, going down by 10 goals. The girls worked well as a team, with strong passes, and great pressure on the ball all the way down the court. Intermediate C team are still undefeated. Last week they played Mt St Michael's (the other undefeated team) only narrowly winning 26-25. This week will certainly be a challenging final, again against Mt St Michael’s. Coach: Magadeline Ryan Intermediate D - The 9b's continued their winning streak, defeating Brigidine 16 - 9. All girls played well. The shooting team of Kassidy Graham, Emily Thomas and Sabrina Sydney was particularly impressive. Well done girls! Coach: Briony Logan Intermediate E girls played a challenging game against Lourdes Hill last week, who came out strong from the start. While winning the first quarter, our team was unable to keep up with the fast-paced shooters and tall defence of the Lourdes team. Great efforts however were made by all the girls to come back, in particular Natasha, Emma and Tiarna with tireless defence. The final score was Lourdes 34 - Loreto 24. Coach: Tara Cullinan Junior A coming up against the top team, the girls knew this was going to be a tough battle. Digging in deep and uniting as a team, the girls put up a strong fight. Unfortunately, the skilful and very well executed St Rita’s came away victorious. The defence down the court was outstanding with a number of intercepts by all players. Congratulations to the girls for an excellent effort in a very tough and physical game! Coach: Clare Gill Junior B had a draw this week with Mt St Michaels at 13 all. The game was quite challenging, especially for our shooters with some tough defence by the opposition. Overall, the girls played well together as a team despite the long break. Special mention must go to our player of the week, Zoe McNamee, who stepped up to the role of GD and worked brilliantly to coordinate the centre court players with the circle defence. Congratulations girls on your sportsmanship this week. Our final game is going to be lots of fun. Coach: Josie Woolaston Junior C defeated Mary MacKillop College 21-10 A spectacular game after more than a month since our last one! "Firm, flat passes" was the catchcry of this game, and the girls executed this well. Congratulations to Sophie Tomlinson on the way she took up the challenge of playing Wing Defence and on her good goal shooting, contributing 4 to our tally. Bridget West is to be commended on the way she positively affects team morale and on her always giving 100%.May we continue to play to our potential in our final game! Coach: Jacqui Gold Junior D had a relatively slow and unconfident start to the game resulted in a narrow 3-2 lead by Loreto after the first quarter. Some great court coverage and intercepts by Julia Palmer and strong shooting by Nicole Kulczyk and Tayla Jansen helped the girls charge ahead in the second quarter to an 11 – 3 lead. Ellouise Spencer defended strongly in the third quarter and impressive shooting by Imogen Day and Anna King consolidated the lead. Even though the girls lost some momentum in the final quarter, they finished with a definitive victory of 23 -11 at the full time hooter, on top of the premiership table. ATHLETICS Training is going well for all athletes involved. There is training at QEII this week. All girls must mark their name on the list of attendances if they want to catch the bus. The bus will transport the girls to and from the QEII stadium. The next QEII training sessions is Tuesday 31July 2012. The Lead Up Series of Athletic Meets are on the following afternoon Friday 3 August and Monday 13 August 2012. All Athletes need to attend at least 2 Athletic Meets. A bus will take the girls to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, ST LUCIA. Competitors will need to be collected at the venue after the meet. The meet will start at 4.00pm and finish at approximately 6.30pm.The girls went well at the UQ meet Friday night. Many girls who competed found it a challenging experience. Thank you sincerely to the parents who helped at the meet.

AFL Loreto College has entered a Junior and Senior AFL team into the Brisbane Lions Cup Carnival held on Thursday 9 August at Griffin Park, Coorparoo. A reminder that both teams have training on 2 August at Griffin Park. All players MUST have a mouth guard for training and competition. _ÉÜxàÉBTVVY aÉÜà{xÜÇ gxÜÜ|àÉÜç extÄ _|yx V{tÄÄxÇzx The inaugural Loreto/ACCF Real Life Challenge to the Northern Territory took place over the first week of the June/July holidays. Over the course of the seven days, Mrs Hanson, Mrs Hamilton, nine other Loreto girls and I walked parts of the spectacular Larapinta Trail in the McDonnell Ranges and visited the local Indigenous Community, Santa Theresa, and Alukura, a women’s health clinic inside Alice Springs. The trip was an incredible experience; we slept under the stars, walked a total of 50km and completely immersed ourselves in the adventure. I am sure all of us that participated would agree that it was an experience we will never forget. We would like to give a big thanks to everyone that helped make the trip possible and hope that future students have the opportunity to participate as it really was a worthwhile adventure. We have raised $8500 of our $10000 target and hope to have the rest raised by the end of Term Three. WÜtÅt axãá On Sunday, 5th August the Junior Drama Club will attend a rehearsal in preparation for their plays which will be performed on Friday, 10th in The Mary Ward Centre, beginning at 6.30pm. Each group will be assigned a 1.5 hour long time for rehearsal and two teachers will assist the groups in preparing for what should be a wonderful night of Drama.

On Wednesday at 1 pm, Year 9 and 10 students will be attending “Head Full of Love”, a play set in central Australia. This play concerns the relationship between an aboriginal woman and a city dweller who escapes to the outback and it depicts their developing relationship and the reality of dialysis. It is a heartfelt yet humorous play which is proving to have great audience appeal. Students will travel to and from the theatre by bus and will arrive back at school by 3.00 pm.
