Through experience, continuous research and the
development of state-of-the-art products and
technologies, Alstom has rightfully earned its position
of leadership in the world of power generation.
From 25 development centres and 13 laboratories
around the globe, we focus on the improvement
of plant performance, overall efficiency and helpingour industry to reduce its environmental impact.
IMPROVING PLANT PERFORMANCE
Significant improvements in performance and cost-effectiveness
can be achieved by applying technology solutions to existing
plant development. For example, material research has led to
the construction of turbine blades from a large coated single
crystal to enhance performance and minimise corrosion.
Similarly, advanced engineering simulation systems, such as
thermal modelling, have greatly extended the life of mechanical
components in steam turbines and significantly increased
power output.
IMPROVING PLANT EFFICIENCY
Alstoms technical expertise helps to improve significantly
the efficiency of power plants.
Today we offer advanced, high efficiency supercritical boilers
operating at steam parameters of 600/620C and 275 bar.
In addition, we are currently developing a prototype for an ultra
supercritical (USC) power plant which will operate at 700C
and 350 bar. This higher operational temperature will enablegreater plant efficiency than ever before! Our turbine technology
guarantees high efficiency even in combined-cycle power plants
operating at part-load.

REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Alstom has been able to reduce the environmental impact
of power plants in many ways and integrates environmental
impact analysis into the design process. This has a direct effect
on lowering cost during the plant life cycle.
Overall efficiency improvements help to reduce CO2 emissions,
while specific technologies minimise the emission of specific
pollutants. For example, our high efficiency pulverised coal
combustion system minimises all traditional pollutants. Circulating
Fluidised Bed (CFB) technology inhibits nitrogen oxide (NOx)
emissions, while flue gas desulphurisation technology can
capture as much as 98% of sulphur dioxide emissions
from conventional suspension-fired boilers. Similarly, advanced
emission control systems are able to capture remaining
emissions from pulverised coal and CFB units while also
reducing mercury emissions.
Our aim is to achieve near zero CO2 emissions through the
application of efficiency, our Plant Integrator approach,
and carbon capture technologies.
RESEARCH IN ACTION
In addition to our own research & development efforts to
develop new emission control technologies and improve existing
techniques, we are also involved in a number of public projects
and partnerships, notably in the field of CO2 capture and storage.
Within the ENCAP programme (funded by the European
Union), research is under way to develop new CO2 capture
technologies
The Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ZEP)
technology platform (launched by the European
Commission) aims at enabling European Fossil Fuel
Power Plants to have zero CO2 emissions by 2020.

EXPERTISE IN
CLEAN POWER SOLUTIONS
Alstom technologies are delivering solutions today! As the
uncontested leader in clean power generation technologies, we
provide the cleanest integrated power solutions on the market
and this for all plants (both existing and new),
all energy sources (fossil fuels, hydro, nuclear),
and all emissions (NOx, SOx, mercury, particulate matter).
For example, we deliver new coal-fired power plants with an
advanced supercritical design using proven clean combustion
solutions that are integrated with state-of-the-art emission
control systems. Similarly, we improve the thermal and
environmental efficiency of existing power plants by retrofitting
plant components, or upgrading the entire system.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF CLEAN POWER
Alstom invests strongly in the research and development of
environmentally conscious, cleaner solutions.
With Alstom's innovations in boiler technology, new supercritical
and ultra supercritical, coal-fired plants will achieve around
50% efficiency. This optimises reliability and offers greater
availability.
Together with partners, universities and our utility customers
in Europe and the United States, we are collaborating
on the development of options for post-combustion and
oxy-combustion CO2 capture.

READY FOR CARBON CAPTURE:
NOW AND TOMORROW
Of the main technology paths leading to the capture
of CO2 emitted by burning fossil fuels, Alstom Power
is concentrating on post-combustion technologies
and oxy-combustion.One reason is that capture technologies must be
adaptable to existing power stations. Secondly,
they must serve as built-in components of the
numerous power stations, mainly coal, that will be
built by 2030, to meet the growing energy demand
of developing countries. Applying this new technology
to the global installed base, is a key challenge to which
Alstom is fully committed.
POST-COMBUSTION CAPTURE
Post-combustion capture is the most readily available technology
today and the most easily adaptable to the large installed base
of coal and gas units.
With this technology, the CO2 is selectively removed from flue
gas in the power plant through a capture unit. The most widelydeveloped post-combustion capture solvent is amine. The major
problem with amine capture is the high cost: due to the heat
required during the stripping phase to separate the amine solvent
and CO2. This would lead to a 25% decrease in plant output.
In February 2008 Alstom signed a joint development and
commercialisation agreement with Dow Chemical Company,
the global gas treating technology leader and the worlds largest
producer of amines. This agreement aims to develop the most
economic and environmentally conscious, amine-based carbon
capture solutions.
Alstom is also pursuing a very promising new post-combustionprocess involving chilled ammonia. This technology potentially
has much lower energy requirements, significantly reducing the
cost of CO2 capture. Alstom has a clear strategy to develop chilled
ammonia both on coal and gas effluents and has announced
numerous partnerships with EPRI, Statoil, WE Energies, AEP
and EoN in order to validate the process on an industrial level
before the end of 2011.

OXY-FIRING TECHNOLOGY
Oxy-firing technology involves burning solid fuel with high-purity
oxygen rather than air. The combustion is controlled with
a recycle stream of CO2. The flue gas obtained from oxy-
combustion is mainly composed of water and CO2, the latter
of which is easily captured at the back-end by water separation.
Oxy-firing applies to new units but may suit some retrofits
as well.
Alstom is playing a key role in developing oxy-fired PC and
CFB techniques. We have been selected by the power producer,
Vattenfall to set up the first steam power plant using the oxygen
combustion of brown coal.
Based on its CFB know-how, Alstom is also investigating
breakthrough technologies such as chemical looping. This
unique system replaces the traditional boiler with a two-stage
chemical conversion process, using an oxygen 'carrier' to transfer
oxygen to the fuel. The exhaust gas is similar to oxy-firing,
enabling easy CO2 capture. Preliminary testing at the 10kW
Chalmers unit (under the EU ENCAP programme) and continuingresearch on the chemical looping process development unit of
Alstom in Windsor CT, in the USA and in Meudon, France are
very promising.

GRID COMPATIBILITY
Alstom wind turbines offer dynamic control of the active and
reactive power and supply continuity against voltage drop-downs
(Line Fault Ride-Through). These features allow wind farms to
act as standard power plants, providing full support to the grid
especially during grid transients. Our wind turbines fulfil most international grid connection
requirements and in particular, they are certified to comply with
the newest Spanish regulations, which are among the most
demanding codes in Europe.
UNIQUE MECHANICAL DESIGN
The unique mechanical design of our wind turbines separates
bending loads from torque loads. These torque loads are then
transmitted uniquely to the low-speed shaft.
The drive train has an intelligent design that provides controlledflexibility. This feature, combined with and torque control,
reduces the number of cycles for extreme loads. As a result,
the wind turbine achieves greater cost-effectiveness, reduces
maintenance costs and optimises energy yield.
CERTIFICATION
All Alstom wind turbines are certified according to IEC-EN standards
by international organisations recognised to issue IEC-WT01
Type Certificates. These standards requirements include the
inspection of assembly, full scale tests of the blades and load,
as well as performance measurements.
Alstom believes in wind as a viable clean power
source to help meet the global challenge of supplying
rising energy demands, while lowering the emissions
of CO2 and traditional pollutants.

RETROFIT FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
An entire generation of power plants, built in the last ten
to forty years, faces a series of existing and future emission
regulations to which they must comply. In order to respond to
these obligations and boost power plant efficiency, availability
and extend their lifetime, Alstom offers state-of-the-art technologies.
These range from comprehensive retrofits for boilers, turbines
and air quality control systems to complete plant upgrades,
rehabilitation packages, and service partnerships.
Our project capabilities and references also include
re-powering applications, such as the conversion of an existing
steam plant into a combined-cycle; co-generation for district
heating, industrial processes or desalination; or phased-
construction and steam-tail add-ons to convert simple-cycle
into combined-cycle plants.
Advanced technology provides Alstom with the ability to retrofit
any OEM nuclear or fossil steam turbine with its own technology.
Both impulse and reaction blading solutions with adapted aero-
dynamics create the best performance and the highest levels of
sustained efficiency.
Integrated Retrofit Project solutions (IRP) combined with
unique optimised plant retrofits (boiler/condenser/ turbine)
allow Alstom to take a systematic and holistic approach to
analyse the interaction between key components.
This guarantees a smooth, cohesive integration of complex
parts into a highly efficient power plant unit.
Alstom has the largest retrofit experience in the market with
over 260 third-party cylinder retrofits and over 370 fleet
cylinder retrofits.
LOWER EMISSIONS
Our retrofit offering for boilers and turbines, combined with our
vast expertise in plant upgrades and rehabilitation, allows plant
operators to comply with existing and future emission regulations.
Finally, by adding Alstoms emission capture equipment they
can achieve even greater reductions in emissions.
INCREASED EFFICIENCY
Alstom proposes technology enhancements and equipmentupgrades to improve the efficiency of power plants up to 20%.

TURBINE RETROFITS
As with all our retrofits, turbine retrofits performed by Alstom
not only help to reduce emissions, but create real and financialbenefits for plant operators. We offer retrofits of blade carriers
and bladed rotors, inner blocks, part turbines and whole turbines.
In comparison to existing designs, Alstom's modern Low
Pressure (LP) turbine retrofit designs, provide remarkable
improvements in efficiency. This is due to the application of
Computational Fluid Dynamics, (CFD), (our) state-of-the-art
modeling concept for blade and steam path design.
TOTAL PLANT RETROFITS
Alstom's policy of meeting together with utility personnel and
our own engineers, allows us to develop the optimum solution
when it comes to combining boiler and turbine retrofits.
Strong partnership and close collaboration like this, achieve the
best results for the specific needs of a particular power plant.

Boiler Retrofits
BOILER RETROFITS
Alstom has no equal when it comes to boiler retrofits. Over the
years we have performed upgrades and retrofits on 1400 unitsworldwide, of which 40% were designed by other manufacturers.
Alstom is in the unique position to deliver emission and performance
guarantees on plant parameters. The range of engineered retrofit
solutions covers: life extension and rehabilitation of ageing
units, boiler performance optimisation, low NOx combustion
systems for emission reduction, fuel conversion and additions - fuel
switching, biomass co-firing and fuel blending - and pressure part
re-design and replacement. Alstoms advanced surface coating
technology significantly reduces the corrosion of tubes, which is
a major source of power outages.
We also help plant operators increase the range of fuels which
can be used to access a broader fuel supply. This includes more
environmentally conscious fuels such as biomass co-firing.
Switching to more difficult fuels or residues like petcoke, while
still maintaining the highest level of environmental protection
available.
We also have unique value-integration skills that combine
boiler and turbine retrofits to increase the plants economics
and its environmental benefits.
