Marvel at the labyrinth of narrow lanes in the fortified old town which has seen a melting pot of civili- sations including Romans, Byzantines and Slavs. Continue to historic Ulcinj and have an orientation tour to take in its history then admire the old town at your leisure. Ulcinji abuts the Albanian border and provides an authentic taste of Albanian culture. More than half the population is Albanian and its numerous mosques with their elegant mina- rets and its local cuisine are distinctly eastern oriental. Split to Mostar

Mostar is a UNESCO World heritage protect-

ed site after being severely damage by war. It

is an Ottoman frontier town famed for its

Turkish houses, cultural diversity and iconic

rebuilt 16th century bridge over the River

town was named. It connects two sides of the

Depart for Slovenia today arriving in Ljubljana

around lunch time. Slovenia is a small nation

nestled between Austria and Croatia and is

surely one of the most unspoilt travel destina-

tions in Europe. It boasts pristine scenery, vast

forests and hillsides dotted with picturesque

villages and traditional farmhouses. It has a

tiny coastline on the Adriatic Sea and its rich

cultural sites are as yet not overrun. You are

met by your local guide to begin sightseeing in

Slovenia’s compact capital with an orientation

walk through the charming old town with its

Baroque Town Hall and Renaissance and Ba-

roque architectural highlights. Sights include

the Cathedral of St Nicholas, Ribji Square,

Robba’s Fountain, Ljubljana Castle, the six

bridges over the River Ljubljanica including the

landmark Dragon Bridge and the National Mu-

seum. This evening a welcome dinner has been

arranged in a cosy local tavern with traditional

folklore entertainment.

is truly one of the most beautiful in all of

Europe. Located in the heart of the Slovenian

Alps, Lake Bled offers fairy tale scenery and

two lovely castles. On arrival you board tradi-

tional wooden boats called Pletna and are

rowed across the deep emerald coloured wa-

ters for a guided tour of the baroque church

and 11th century castle on an island in the

lake. After lunch at leisure in Bled town you

drive to medieval Blejski Grad castle.

Lake Bled to Rovinj

Depart Lake Bled stopping for a tour of the

two million year old Postojna Caves, Europe’s

largest and most fascinating subterranean cave

system. These stunning caves contain magnifi-

cent cave halls, drop stones, pillars and trans-

lucent curtains. You also stop at medieval

Predjama Castle which is spectacularly built

in to the side of a mountain concealing the

caves, for a guided tour. In the afternoon you

meet the Adriatic coast in the delightful Vene-

tian inspired port town of Piran. Marvel at the

Italianate architecture, explore the quaint

squares and narrow alleyways with their Ital-

ian names and sample the Italian coffee.

Around the ornate old town hall is the Vene-

tian House and Church of St Peter. Crossing

the border in to Croatia you travel to pretty

Rovinj on the Istrian Peninsula.

Rovinj & Pula

This morning you take a short coastal drive to

Pula, an ancient city with many cultural mon-

uments and the Istrian capital. Istria provides

an authentic reflection of Croatian life and

culture. Here you visit the 1st century Roman

amphitheatre, the Forum Castello, the Basilica

of St Mary Formosa and the Cathedral with a

local guide. Enjoy lunch at leisure. You might

like to visit Café Uliks, the preferred café of

author James Joyce. In the afternoon return to

historic Rovinj where medieval architecture,

labyrinth lanes and picturesque squares make

it one of the most attractive spots on the Adri-

atic. Relish some leisure time, great seafood

restaurants and the al fresco café culture.

Rovinj to Plitvice Lakes

Travel to the UNESCO World heritage Na-

tional Park of Plitvice Lakes, famed for its

stunning terraced turquoise lakes and connect-

ing waterfalls. Take it all in with a local guide

this natural wonder.

Day 9 Tuesday 08 September

Plivice to Rab

Croatia’s islands are true treasures of the Adri-

atic. Today you take a boat from Stinica on the

mainland to the island of Rab. Arriving in

Misnjak you transfer to your hotel near Rab

town for the next two nights. Rab which be-

longed to Italy until the end of WW1, provides

an authentic experience reflecting both Italian

and Croatian culture. Dinner has been ar-

ranged for you in a lovely local restaurant.

After a walking tour of medieval Rab town

with a local guide you have the remainder of

the day free to enjoy the island. Rab, first in-

habited by a Slavic population in the 7th centu-

ry is a delightful gem covered in oak forests,

olive groves and vineyards. It is dotted with

seven ancient villages and surrounded by spar-

kling turquoise sea. Swim, hike, explore the

medieval lanes, shops and cafes and enjoy the

relaxing atmosphere.

Day 10 Wednesday 09 September

Rab to Zadar

Today you depart the island for the ancient

Dalmatian capital of Zadar. This lovely town

boasts Roman ruins, medieval churches and a

Habsburg elegance. Have a locally guided tour

of the historic centre in the afternoon then

enjoy dinner and a stroll to the pretty water-

front with your tour leader to experience the

Sound and Light spectacle of the Sea Organ a

real musical instrument powered by the sea,

and the Sun Salutation, two of Zadar’s unique

attractions which harness nature to create

something spectacular.

Continue along the magical Dalmatian Coast to

Split and enjoy a stop in beautiful Trogir. This

picturesque old town on a small island is

UNESCO World Heritage listed as a culturally

to paint. Enjoy some leisure time before arriv-

ing in Split and having a walking orientation

tour of the old town with a local guide. Dinner

has been arranged at a harbour side restaurant

this evening.

This morning you have a guided tour of the

ancient Diocletian Palace which was built in

the 4th century for the Roman Emperor Dio-

cletian. Today this ancient site which is more

of a fortress than a palace, is UNESCO World

Heritage listed and forms half of the historic

core of Split. You also tour Roman Salona

once the capital of Dalmatia, one of the largest

cities in the Roman Empire and possibly the

best archaeological site in Croatia. The after-

noon is at your leisure to relax, sight see at

your own pace and absorb the ambience.
