Fr. Kevin’s Spirit-Seekers Seminar Sunday, November 10, 4:00-6:00 PM in the PAC The “Short Cut” to Closeness with God and Freedom from Unhealthy Habits

This year’s seminars focus on the stages of the spiritual journey according to the most important female au-thor in Christian history -- St. Teresa of Avila, the great 16th century spiritual master. The topic on November 10 will be the “Fourth Dwelling Places” of St. Teresa’s The Interior Castle” – how meditation develops into contemplation and leads to increasing closeness with God and freedom from unhealthy habits.

Dear Sisters and Brothers of St. Lucy: I am sure by now that you have noticed the new fence that stretches from the gym all the way to the chain link fence along Industrial Way. This fence was added as part of the general initiative to improve safety and security on our campus and specifically designed to help prevent the possibility of unauthorized persons on the school grounds. It is a sad commentary on the times in which we live, but deemed necessary, reasonable and prudent in light of the recent increase in school violence. Additionally, easy access to St. Lucy grounds from Industri-al Way, Winchester Blvd and the VTA station has resulted in growing tendency for the general public to wander onto the school grounds and even into classrooms. It is our hope and prayer that the new fence will provide the safety and securi-ty necessary to help protect our children and community. The fence was designed in such a way as to have minimal im-pact on existing traffic patterns for mass attendance, Fun Fest and school pick-up and drop-off but it may take some get-ting used to. We ask your patience and cooperation as we learn to accommodate this new addition to our campus.

GOD’S LOGIC IS NOT OURS

Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remem-ber this when we approach today’s readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disciplines of fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and ten-derness, knows how quickly we can get “into a rut.” The Spirit inspires pas-sages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that God’s ways are our ways.

Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, “Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of heaven?” The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his par-able of the Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates today’s message: God hears the voices of those who are ignored by the rest of the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas de Santa Lucia: Estoy seguro que han visto la nueva cerca que se extiende desde el gimnasio hasta la cerca de alambre a lo largo de Industrial Way. Esta cerca se añadió como parte de la iniciati-va para mejorar la seguridad del campus y, específicamente diseñada para ayudar a prevenir la posibilidad de que per-sonas no autorizadas entren a las instalaciones de la escuela. Es un triste comentario sobre los tiempos en que vivimos, pero se considera necesario, razonable y prudente a la luz del reciente aumento de la violencia escolar. Además, el ac-ceso fácil al terreno de Santa Lucia de Industrial Way , Winchester Blvd. y la estación de VTA ha creado la tendencia que haiga vagos en los terrenos de la escuela e incluso en las clases . Es nuestra esperanza y oración que la nueva cerca proporcionará la seguridad necesaria para proteger a nuestros niños y a nuestra comunidad. Las pláticas de este año se centran en las etapas del camino espiritual según la autora femenina más importante de la historia cristiana - Santa Teresa de Ávila, la gran maestra espiritual del siglo 16. El tema para el 10 de noviembre será las "cuarto moradas" de Santa Teresa del “Castillo Interior "- cómo la meditación se convierte en contemplación y con-duce al aumento de la cercanía con Dios y la libertad de los hábitos no saludables.

LA LÓGICA DE DIOS NO ES LA NUESTRA Nadie confundiría la Biblia con un libro de lógica. Recordémoslo cuando meditemos sobre las lecturas de hoy. ¿Cómo puede un Dios que no tiene favoritismo escoger a un pueblo, o darnos la disciplina del ayuno y la limosna y luego instruirnos a no hablar de ello? Dios, amoroso y tierno, sabe cuán pronto podemos caer “en la rutina”. El Espíritu inspira pasajes como la ins-trucción de Sirácides y la parábola de san Lucas para ayudarnos a salir de la rutina y compren-der que los caminos de Dios no son los nuestros.

Sirácides poéticamente usa contrastes para contestar la pregunta: “¿Qué oración llegará hasta las nubes del cielo?” ¿La respuesta? La de los humildes de la tierra. Jesús amplifica esto en su parábola del fariseo y el publicano. Es ilógi-camente inspirada por el Espíritu que comunica el mensaje de hoy: Dios escucha la voz de los ignorados por el resto del mundo. Through the Gabriel Project, a new program of the Diocese of San Jose, an expectant mother who feels alone with nowhere to turn can receive the emotional, physical, and spiritual support she needs throughout her pregnancy and beyond. This program provides a pregnant mother with personal care and friendship, mentors her in accessing the local resources she needs, and helps to empower her to advocate and care for her baby. You are invited to bring photos of your dearly deceased to be displayed on the All Souls’ Day Altar in Church. What do you have to do?

- Bring the photos to the Parish Office, from Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM through to 6:00 PM, or - Email photos to stlucyparishoffice@dsj.org, don’t forget to include the name of the deceased, and write “All Souls’ Day Photo” in the subject.
