    FACULTY JOB DESCRIPTION

    A. Position Summary

    The instructor is responsible for the coordination,planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation

    of classroom instruction and related activities. The instructor is responsible for performing assigned

    duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Jefferson Davis Community College campus as

    assigned. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, instructional counseling, academicadvising, serving on various committees, participating in local, state, regional, and national

    professional activities and organizations. An instructor performs all other duties as directed by the

    Division Chair, Dean of Instruction, or the President or designee.

    B. Organizational Reporting

    The instructor is directly responsible to the Division Chair in the division in which he/she teaches.

    C. Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

    At a minimum, the essential functions of the instructor are:

    to coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or on

    weekends on any Jefferson Davis Community College campus as assigned;

    to keep active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulate

    enthusiasm for those subjects;

    to ensure that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has

    appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency; to recommend textbooks and other instructional materials including classroom and

    laboratory equipment to Division Chairs;

    to assist in the colleges library collection development by selecting, evaluating, and

    weeding library resources in each appropriate discipline;

    to teach all classes according to an approved course syllabus;

    to keep students informed and updated concerning course content, requirements,

    evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;

    to keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of

    papers and other work;

    to provide students with a mid-term progress report;

    to maintain accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance

    records;

    to submit Failure to Report, Early Warning, Notification of Unofficial

    Withdrawal, and other documentation when appropriate;

    to file an appropriate course syllabus for each course taught with the appropriate

    division chair and the Dean of Instructions office;

    to conduct class evaluations and complete other college evaluations in

    accordance with college policy;

    to ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled;

    to hold the final exam at the time scheduled in the colleges semester schedule,

    unless permission to deviate has been approved by the Dean of Instruction;

    to make suggestions to the Division Chair or the Dean of Instruction concerning the

    improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the college;

    to participate in program and curriculum review and development and student

    learning outcomes initiatives;

    to make use of available college online resources (home page, office hour posting,

    syllabi posting, grade book, Instructional Policy Manual, etc.);

    to plan each unit or lesson, both as to content and method, to make each class

    minute meaningful;

    to organize each course taught into an effective instrument of learning;

    to study and utilize students' learning styles in each class in order to facilitate the

    best teaching and learning situations;

    to incorporate instructional technologies in instructional delivery;

    to maximize the learning opportunities for each student;

    to keep informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via

    professional development activities;

    to submit annual program budgets to the Division Chair and work closely with theappropriate Division Chair on the development of annual division budgets for approval by

    the Dean of Instruction;

    to assist with pre-registration and registration;

    to demonstrate a genuine concern for each student through personal conferences and

    the full use of the faculty advisement system;

    to assist in recruitment and retention of students;

    to serve as an academic advisor to assigned students;

    to post and maintain office hours for student consultations;

    to strive for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the

    college;

    to refer students to counselors as needed;

    to submit required reports to the appropriate college personnel; to attend all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and

    orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean of Instruction, or

    Division Chair;

    to become thoroughly familiar with all college policies and procedures and comply

    with all college policies and procedures;

    to serve on and provide information to college committees as needed;

    to be actively involved in the co-curricular activities of the college; and

    to convey college-related information to students in a timely manner as requested by

    college officials.

    D. Other Responsibilities

    Assume other work related responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chair, the Dean of

    Instruction, or the President or his/her designee.

    E. Performance Evaluation

    The instructors job performance will be evaluated in accordance with college policy.

    F. Qualifications

    The qualifications for the Instructor shall be in accordance with the applicable certification/credential

    requirements specified by the Alabama State Board of Education and the appropriate accreditingagency or organization.

    NOTE: Physical characteristics indicate standard functions for essential job tasks, but are not

    intended to limit the applicant pool.
