YES, LORD!

God chose to announce the promised Savior to a young woman in a backwater village called Nazareth. In a small painting created over a thousand years ago, the artist shows the angel holding up one hand in greeting. Mary is standing facing him with her hands extended in welcome. The words of the angel are rich in power and promise: “you have found favor with God . . . [your child] will be called Son of the Most High . . . The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (Luke 1:30, 32, 35). Pure of heart and trusting completely, Mary answered God with a wholehearted “yes.” Through her cooperation, God broke into our world, breathing the same air we breathe, experiencing our sorrows and joys. God became flesh in the Son, Jesus Christ, born of Mary. The world would never be the same. The time is here to let him into our hearts and change us completely.

La reapertura de la Santa Misa

¡SÍ, SEÑOR!

Dios escogió anunciar al Salvador prometido a una jovencita de un pueblo insignificante de nombre Nazaret. En una pequeña pintura de hace más de mil años el artista muestra al ángel con una mano en alto en señal de saludo. María está de pie frente al ángel con sus manos extendidas demostrando acogida. Las palabras del ángel son ricas en poder y promesa: “Has hallado gracia ante Dios. . . [Tu hijo] será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. . . reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reinado no tendrá fin . . . El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá” (Lucas 1:30, 32, 33, 35). Pura de corazón y con una confianza total, María le dio su “sí” sin reservas a Dios. Por la cooperación de ella Dios irrumpió en nuestro mundo, respirando el aire que nosotros respiramos, y experimentando nuestros sufrimientos y alegrías. Dios se hizo carne en el Hijo Jesucristo que nació de María. El mundo no volverá a ser el mismo otra vez. RREEFFLLEEXXIIOONNEEMMOOSS SSOOBBRREE LLAA PPAALLAABBRRAA DDEE DDIIOOSS El Señor Dios le dará el trono de su padre David. (Lucas 1:32) ¡Es casi Navidad! Ese pensamiento puede llenar nuestros corazones de anticipación. Es posible que tengamos ganas de ver a amigos o familiares. No podemos esperar a ver la expresión del rostro de un ser querido cuando abran el regalo que elegimos cuidadosamente. O simplemente queremos disfrutar celebrando el nacimiento de Jesús con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. ¡Pero piense en la anticipación que sintieron los judíos mientras esperaban la venida del Mesías! Su esperanza se encendió casi mil años antes de Cristo, cuando Dios le prometió a David un linaje real. Imagine también la sorpresa de María cuando el ángel describió al hijo que daría a luz usando casi las mismas palabras que Dios le había dicho a David mucho antes. Lo llamarían Hijo del Altísimo, se sentaría en el trono de su padre, David, y reinaría sobre un reino eterno (Lucas 1: 26-38). La larga espera de Israel había terminado: el nacimiento de Jesús produciría todo lo que habían esperado. Como cristianos de hoy en día, no experimentamos el anhelo de los judíos por un Mesías, pero aún podemos sentir el dolor del anhelo. Por la paz. Para la justicia. Por seguridad. Jesús también es el cumplimiento de estos anhelos. Cuando un conflicto, a gran o pequeña escala, amenaza con destrozarnos, Jesús ofrece la reconciliación y la oportunidad de vivir una vez más en paz con Dios y con nuestro prójimo. Cuando la injusticia nos rompe el corazón, Jesús nos dice que ha venido para arreglar todo y darnos la fuerza para mejorar las cosas en nuestro propio rincón del mundo. Cuando la inseguridad nos hace sentir que nada permanece igual, Jesús nos recuerda que su reino es eterno; nos da una base segura sobre la que construir nuestras vidas. Ese es el tipo de satisfacción que puede traer el reinado de Jesús. Eso es lo que promete. Y ese es un regalo que todos podemos recibir esta Navidad. Reflecting on God’s Word The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. (Luke 1:32)

It’s almost Christmas! That thought can fill our hearts with anticipation. We might look forward to seeing friends or family. We can’t wait to see the look on a loved one’s face when they open the gift we carefully chose. Or we just want to enjoy celebrating Jesus’ birth with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

But think about the anticipation that the Jews felt as they awaited the coming of the Messiah! Their hope was kindled almost one thousand years before Christ, when God promised David a kingly lineage. Imagine as well Mary’s surprise when the angel described the son she would bear by using nearly the same words that God had spoken to David so much earlier. He would be called Son of the Most High, he would sit on the throne of his father, David, and he would reign over an eternal kingdom (Luke 1:26-38). Israel’s long wait was over—the birth of Jesus would bring about everything they had hoped for.

As modern-day Christians, we don’t experience the Jews’ yearning for a Messiah, but we can still feel the ache of longing. For peace. For justice. For security. Jesus is the fulfillment of these yearnings too. When conflict—on a large or small scale—threatens to tear us apart, Jesus offers reconciliation and the chance to live once more in peace with God and our neighbor. When injustice breaks our hearts, Jesus tells us he has come to make all things right and to give us the strength to make things better in our own corner of the world. When insecurity makes us feel as if nothing ever remains the same, Jesus reminds us that his kingdom is everlasting; he gives us a sure foundation to build our lives on.

That’s the kind of fulfillment that the kingship of Jesus can bring. That’s what he promises. And that’s a gift we can all receive this Christmas.
