PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

This Sunday, during the octave of Christmas the Church calls us to contemplate the Holy Family of Nazareth, Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It’s so amazed how God the Father decided that His only begotten Son, Jesus, be born and sustained in a normal family. Our Family Father chose nothing else than a family to start the work of redemption. The first thing that was done by the birth of Jesus is the sanctification of the family. The Holy Family of Nazareth is a model because they assumed several difficulties that today’s family has to undergo: the so-journ in Egypt, the return to Nazareth, and the incidents that occurred when the twelve-year-old boy accompanied his parents to Jerusalem, also the Holy Family observed the religious laws of Israel; it went in pilgrimage to Jerusalem every year with other Jewish families (Lk. 2:41). Jesus saddens and amazes His father and His mother because to do their will and com-pany He prefers "to be in His Father's house". Thus it may happen that God's will oblige the family to make disconcert-ing sacrifices. Yet every Christian family must live in harmony and in prayer, which are the pledges of joy and union. "He remained obedient to them." Jesus was God. And through the fullness of grace Mary stood above Joseph. Never-theless — if we except the event in the Temple — Joseph remained the head of the family; he took the initiative (as when the Holy Family fled to Egypt), and in Nazareth Jesus obeyed His parents. Today’s celebration demonstrates Christ’s humility and obedience with respect to the fourth commandment, while also highlighting the loving care that His parents exercised in His keeping. Saint John Paul II, in 1989, entitled his Apostol-ic Exhortation, ‘Redemptoris Custos’(Guardian of the Redeemer) which was dedicated to the person and the mission of Saint Joseph in the life of Christ and of the Church. After exactly a century, he resumed the teaching of Pope Leo XIII, for who Saint Joseph ‘.. shines among all mankind by the most august dignity, since by divine will, he was the guardi-an of the Son of God and reputed as His father among men’ (Encyclical Quamquam Pluries[1889] n. 3). Pope Leo XIII continued, ‘.. Joseph became the guardian, the administrator, and the legal defender of the divine house whose chief he was.[…] It is, then, natural and worthy that as the Blessed Joseph ministered to all the needs of the family at Nazareth and girt it about with his protection, he should now cover with the cloak of his heavenly patronage and defend the Church of Jesus Christ.’ Not many years before, blessed Pope Pius IX had proclaimed Saint Joseph, ‘Patron of the Catholic Church’ (1870) As we celebrate this solemnity of the Holy Family, I entrust all the families of Ss Peter and Paul to Jesus, Mary and Joseph, so that they may transform them in an image of the Holy Family. Holy Hour for Peace: On Tuesday December 31st as we are about to welcome the New Year, I invite you to join me to pray for peace in the world. We will be praying and adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament from 3:00 pm to 4:45 pm in the Church. Recently we sadly witness atrocities around the wor ld marked by several events of violence in different parts of the world, especially the murdered of innocent people and the persecuted Christians. We need to pray for peace and reconciliation. Jesus promised us: “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it”(Jn 14:13-14) Remember also that January 1st is a Holy Day of Obligation: “Mary Mother of God” World Day of Peace. Happy New Year to all! Blessings. Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

an của Israel.

“God is not indifferent! God cares about mankind! God does not abandon us! At the beginning of the New Year, I would like to share not only this profound conviction but also my cordial good wishes for prosperity, peace and the ful-filment of the hopes of every man and every woman, every family, people and nation throughout the world, including all Heads of State and Government and all religious leaders” Pope Francis (Message for the World Day of Peace 2016)

The Solemnity of the Holy

Mother of God

On New Year's Day, the octave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God. The divine and virginal moth-erhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a singular salvific event: for Our Lady it was the foretaste and cause of her extraordinary glory; for us it is a source of grace and salvation because "through her we have received the Author of life.” The solemnity of January 1at, an eminently Marian feast, presents an excellent opportunity for liturgical piety to encounter popular piety: the first celebrates this event in a manner proper to it; the second, when duly catechized, lends joy and happiness to the various expressions of praise offered to Our Lady on the birth of her divine Son, to deepen our understanding of many prayers, beginning with that which says: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners".
