GOOD FRIDAY
MASS INTENTIONS
CANADA SUMMER JOBS
The federal government has introduced new requirements for
employers applying for the Canada Summer Jobs grant. To be
eligible for funding, employers must attest that both the job and
the organization’s core mandate respect certain “values” as
determined by the federal government including the government’s
position on abortion, sexual orientation and gender identity or
expression. Organizations unable or unwilling to make this
attestation in whole or in part will be deemed ineligible for the
grant. This requirement is clearly unjust.
Many Catholic organizations throughout the Archdiocese of
Toronto and many other faiths involved in charitable activity at
soup kitchens, shelters, refugee welcome centres or summer
camps are impacted by this decision. Please take a moment to
visit www.archtoronto.org/summerjobs for more information and
to find a template letter to send to your MP and the Minister
responsible for this portfolio.
Due to the many misconceptions regarding the Catholic Church
and marriage, please note that a Catholic may marry a non-
Catholic in the Catholic Church, without his or her conversion to
the faith. In some instances, a person, who has been previously
married, can also be married in the Catholic Church after
consultation with the priest.
If as a Catholic you’re married outside of the Catholic Church
without the permission of the Church, we respectfully ask that you
refrain from receiving the Eucharist until your marriage has been
validated (“sacramentalized”) by a Catholic priest or deacon. To
remedy this situation, please call one of the priests to make an
appointment to have your marriage validated. We are only too
happy to bring back to the couple, the graces necessary to live out
their marriage, and to reconcile them with the graces of the
Eucharist.
The Faith Explained Pilgrimage to the Holy Land will take
place from November 23—December 3, 2018. It will be led
by Father Ryan Alemao, who grew up here at St Francis deSales
parish, and Cale Clarke, Director of The Faith Explained
Seminars. Every Catholic, if possible, should visit the Holy Land
at least once in their lifetime. Saint Jerome once called the Holy
Land the "Fifth Gospel". Why? Because, when you walk where
Jesus walked, and experience the places where he lived, taught,
worked miracles, and rose from the dead, the Bible comes alive
in amazing ways! Israel is a gorgeous, utterly modern country
that you will fall in love with immediately. But most of all, you'll
fall more in love with Jesus and your Catholic faith in a much,
much deeper way. Your relationship with the Lord will never be
the same. We will be having an information session
on Tuesday, 10 April at 7:30 PM in the North Room at St
Francis to give you more details. Hope you can join us!
*CHRISM MASS Please note on Tuesday March 27th our morning Mass will be at
8am. The archdiocesan Chrism Mass will be held at St. Michael’s
Cathedral, (65 Bond Street, Toronto) at 11 am. All are welcome.
HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE
MARRIAGE & COMMUNION
Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14
years old and older must abstain from meat on Good Friday and
all the Fridays of the year.
Fasting means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not
equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around
midday or in the evening—depending on when a person chooses
to eat the main or full meal. Abstinence forbids the consumption
of meat, but not of eggs or milk products.
Confessions will not be heard on Saturday March 31, or before
each of the Easter Sunday Masses.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Why do we celebrate the Passion of Jesus on Palm
Sunday when we celebrate His Passion on Good
Friday?
Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, although
important days in the liturgical calendar for Catholics, are
not days of obligation like the 52 Sundays, Christmas and
New Year’s Day (Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God).
Hence, during the Sunday previous to Easter Sunday, a
Catholic who observes his or her Sunday Mass obligation,
will have had the whole Paschal Mystery (from the Upper
Room and the Last supper to Calvary and the Cross to the
Resurrection) presented to them.
Furthermore, the Passion of Christ is painted in different
colours for each of the evangelists. On Passion (Palm)
Sunday of this year, St. Mark’s account is read. St. John’s
account is always read on Good Friday.
What are the differences in the accounts of St. Mark
and St. John of Jesus' passion and death?
In St. Mark's gospel, Jesus is abandoned by everyone in
his trial and death. There is a stark darkness that St. Mark's
Jesus must face.
In St. John's account, Jesus is in complete control of the
situation. It is the others, not Jesus, in St. John's passion
account (like the crowd and Pontius Pilate) who are on
trial before God Himself. In this gospel, we see more of
Jesus' divinity shine through His passion and death.
On Holy Thursday, the very night that Jesus took
bread and wine and changed them into His actual Body
and Blood, we do not read about this. Why not? Why
do we read about the washing of His Apostles' feet in
the gospel of St. John?
The Church decided that the best way to underscore what
Jesus was going to do later that evening in the Garden of
Gethsemane and on Good Friday is told symbolically
washing the feet of His Apostles. In John 13:1-15, when
Jesus removed His outer garment, we think of God the Son
removing the glory of His divinity. As Jesus bends down
to wash the feet, we think of God Himself condescending
to humanity to wash away the dirt of sin. As Jesus pours
water on the feet of His Apostles, we think of His Blood
which pour forth from His Broken Body to wash away our
sins. As Jesus stands up and puts on his outer garment and
sits at the table, we think of His Resurrection and
Ascension into the glory that was Jesus' before His
Incarnation.
