30 Years since the Chernobyl Disaster.. April 26
th will be the 30
th Anniversary of the
disaster at Chernobyl in Northern Ukraine,
which scattered high levels of radioactivity
across Belarus and then on over Europe and
much of the world. Without the bravery and
sacrifice of the ‘liquidators’ who put out the
fires and dived under the reactor to prevent
a further explosion, it could have been so
much worse, leaving much of Europe
uninhabitable. This is a monument to their courage near to Chernobyl.
..but the children of Belarus need our support as much as ever!
30 years is the half-life of caesium-137. Scientists say it takes ten half-lives
before a radioactive substance can be regarded as safe, so Belarus will be
affected for a very long time to come.
Only 10% of the genetic damage occurs in the first generation. Today
babies are born with cancer because of damage
which happened to their parents. Zahar was
diagnosed with fourth stage lymph cancer at
just two months old, but seems to be
responding well to treatment.
Many of the children in the care of our Home Hospice team in Gomel have genetic
disorders. Not all will be linked to Chernobyl, but there has been a very significant
rise in the numbers of children born with genetic
disorders in recent years.
In towns and cities all over Europe there will be events in March and April to mark
the Chernobyl Anniversary and the fifth anniversary of Fukushima, which is a still
unfolding disaster. You will be able to read about some of these events on the
website of the International Chernobyl Network, of which CCP is a founder member.
One of the events we have been
helping to organise is a
Conference in Manchester on
the weekend of March 19th
. A
host of exciting international
speakers will examine the ongoing health effects of Chernobyl and Fukushima and put forward the alternatives

Autism Training in Gomel
In February Jacqui Wheble, from Pictor School,
spent time working with staff and young people at
Special School No 5 and Zhuravichi Orphanage. She
also gave training in autism, jointly with Dr Rashad
Nawaz from Pennine Care, to 40 participants, who
included psychiatrists, neurologists, teachers and
speech therapists. They talked about assessment, creating suitable
learning environments, behaviour
management and medical care for
autistic children, and stressed that psychiatric intervention is rarely needed.
Online Safety Project
Our Training Co-ordinator Geoff Wright is leading a
project in Gomel to teach parents, children and
teachers about how to stay safe on the internet.
Geoff has covered many safeguarding issues during
the training and there is great enthusiasm within the Education Department to roll this
training out across the region and beyond. We are grateful to the British Embassy for
funding this project, and very much hope they will consider funding a second year!
In Memory of Stuart Carmichael
We lost a great supporter of our charity in February when Stuart Carmichael passed away.
Stuart had been a long term member of our West Pennine Group and for several years its co-
ordinator. He and Jackie hosted many children in their home, stayed in touch with them and
were delighted to be invited to the wedding in Minsk of one the young people who had
appreciated their time in Littleborough. Before his illness he had also been an active and
enthusiastic member of the convoy team. Stuart was always willing to go the extra mile to help others and he
will be missed by many.

Recuperative Holidays Summer 2016
During April a group of five year old children and their mothers
will come to stay with families in our Endon and Stoke on
Trent Group. All the children are in remission from cancer and
the holiday will give a great boost to their health. These are
the children who came to stay in Endon last spring.
Most of our visiting children will come in the summer holidays
and almost all will be in remission from cancer.
A second group of small children and their mums will come to
Glossop; 13-15 year olds will stay in Solihull, with a fortnight at
Springfield School in Knowle; older teenagers will come to Endon & Stoke; and younger children will be invited
to Liverpool, Stafford and Gloucester. A group of children from villages in Gomel region will come to Leeds.

summer.
But there is still time to apply if
you think you could spend two
weeks helping to organise
activities for children and
young people with disabilities
and making sure that they have a memorable holiday.
