Symbols take the shape of the groove the weld is to be placed in.

Place in a joint
Used to make butt joints, but can be used to make other types of joints
Double bevel
One of joint members has bevel on both sides and joint is to be welded from both sides
This is not a V-groove
V-groove is with both joint members are beveled and when brought together for the “V”

Written specifications
would read:
Arrow side j groove, 1 1/4-inch depth, 20° groove angle with 1/2-inch fillet welds. Other side j groove, 3/4-inch depth, 20° groove angle with a 3/8-inch fillet weld. All welding to be done in the field in accordance with specification A2.
