To help prepare students for the workplace, everyone on the full-time undergraduate degree programmes has the option of a placement year in business. This provides the students with valuable work experience and improves their chances of gaining employment after graduation. When business students leave the school, their prospects are excellent. Ninety per cent of students start their career or further study within six months, and the average graduate salary is £29,693 – which is almost £10,000 above the UK average. Graduate feedback is top notch too as the Business School has recently been ranked sixth in the country for student satisfaction on business studies / management courses. “Our Chelmsford-based students also benefit from our new, state-of-the art, Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab where they can practice trading and investing with virtual money, and have access to rich data on a huge number of companies,” said Gary Packham, Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Business School. Delighted To top it off, everyone at ARU was delighted when the university was named Entrepreneurial University of the Year 2014 by Times Higher Education, and every student has the opportunity to study enterprise and entrepreneurship, Gary added. The Business School offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from their Chelmsford and Cambridge campuses. There’s also the option of part-time study modes and distance learning, making them attractive and accessible to anyone with work and family commitments but who is looking for career advancement. Once again, the Lord Ashcroft International Business School is sponsoring the Young Entrepreneur of the Year category in the Essex Business Excellence Awards, where experienced judges help pick out the success stories of the future. “This is the perfect fit for us as we have a proven track record of producing some of the best quality business graduates and entrepreneurs in the county,” Gary said. “We understand the importance of entrepreneurs to the economy and very much look forward to meeting the entrants this summer.” We know how to Business school’s ranking and range TOP TEAM: Avanti Insurance Limited staff offer great service Staff ‘thrilled’ with second win IF YOU’RE over 50 and have any kind of medical condition, then finding travel insurance can be a minefield. Avanti provides insurance for customers of all ages, but specialises in cover for the over 50s– with the average age of a customer being 69. Avanti contact centre staff recognise that callers often may have sensitive personal matters to discuss and ensure that everyone is treated with kindness, respect and patience. It’s no surprise therefore that Avanti Insurance picked up the prize for Customer Care and Service for the second year running at last year’s awards. “We are proud of our award-winning customer service and the fact that our agents are not targeted on the length of calls,” said head of marketing Laura Maddison. “We understand our customers’ needs and recognise that it takes as long as it takes to carry out the correct screening and make sure they choose the cover that suits their needs. “Our staff were absolutely thrilled to win another local award for customer service. It reaffirms what our customers already say about our service and these things always positively impact on staff morale.” Laura said she would encourage other companies to enter the awards this year. “They should enter because companies that offer a good level of service should feel proud of their efforts and want to share this with others. It’s always good to be rewarded for hard work and it demonstrates to staff that you value their hard work, and to customers that you are serious about what you do, along with helping to establish brand presence and trust.” Accolade raised firm’s global profile WINNING a business excellence award had helped John Anthony Signs raise its profile at home and overseas. The company, which makes top quality signs for the likes of Harrods and McLaren, picked up the prize for Export in 2014. This was a new category introduced last year by Essex County Council and judges were unanimous that John Anthony Signs was the standout winner. The Rayleigh-based company started out in 1969 with small-scale contracts in the UK but expanded over the decades. Like most UK businesses, John Anthony Signs was hit by the recession in 2009 and had to look overseas for new business at a time when companies here had to put a halt to many of their signage programs. This turned out to be a hugely fortuitous move and the company now works with household name brands all around the world including in Dubai, Kuwait and Egypt “The main benefit of winning this business award has been raising the profile of our export capabilities with our clients,” said David Fagg, sales and marketing director. “Receiving the award in 2014, and being a finalist with the UKTI in 2012, has made a big statement to both existing and potential clients and gives them the confidence to both consider us and place orders with us for large global contracts. “It was an absolute privilege to win the award against some very stiff competition. There is no doubt that winning the award sent a ‘feel-good factor’ throughout our organisation.” Since winning the award, John Anthony Signs has seen a great increase in opportunities to bid for large international contracts. “We are on the cusp of winning a large global deal across 84 countries, which was undoubtedly strengthened by winning the export award, as it was almost a seal of approval as a professional, certified, UK exporter,” David added. My success means I now help others A MAN who was named Outstanding Business Person of the Year in 2014 has gone on to coach other entrepreneurs to help them achieve similar success. James Circus, owner of Estuary Logistics Limited, picked up the prize last year after starting his own business in 2011 and overseeing its rapid growth. Now James has taken his own success and is passing on his experience to other people running small businesses. “I was really pleased to win Outstanding Business Person of the Year,” James said. “It was the first time we had entered these awards and I didn’t expect to win.” Not long after he went into business for himself, James hired a business coach from ActionCOACH. His assigned coach helped him to see the bigger picture and manage the company’s growth and future. “My coach has been invaluable for me and my business and I still see him once a week now,” James said. “After I won the Essex Business Excellence Award, the time was right for me to start coaching other people. I now see four of five small business owners, giving them the kind of advice that helped me grow Estuary Logistics. When getting into coaching, having won the Outstanding Business Person of the Year was a fantastic thing to have on my CV.” When James entered the business awards he employed around 25 people. Now there are 42 employees and they’ve recently relocated to larger premises in Thurrock. “I meet a lot of small and medium-sized business owners through the coaching world and I tell everyone to enter business awards,” James said. “It’s fair to say that winning awards has helped us increase our portfolio of clients, and increase turnover and profit. “Even though it was nice for me to win this individual award, which shows you that all your efforts are worthwhile, any business award we win is for the whole team who work really hard.” SIGNS ARE GOOD: John Anthony Signs’ clients include McLaren, Disney and Harrods OUTSTANDING: James Circus from Estuary Logistics CUTTING EDGE: Anglia Ruskin University’s Lord Ashcroft building HI-TECH: The Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab at Lord Ascroft International Business School where students practise trading
