Dear Parents and Students

In the context of our Ignatian spirituality and the spirit of Felicity I invite you to pray with me the Optimist’s Creed. Certainly, Mary Ward did not write this prayer but we know, with utter confidence, she lived it. We thus pray for the Grace to be optimistic, grateful and loving. Each day and every moment is a gift for which we give thanks. Amen. In this spirit of optimism and hope we hold our Year 12 students especially in our prayers this week. May they sit their QCS tests confidently and calmly knowing that they are well placed to give their best. THANK-YOU I am delighted to share with you this letter of thanks from the St Francis of Assisi SVDP conference at West End. Dear Mrs Hamilton On behalf of our conference, I would like to thank you and everyone at Loreto College for your very generous donation of $4000 to flood affected families in Fairfield and West End. It is wonderful that the Loreto community has kept them in your thoughts for so long. Even though it is eight months since the floods there are still lots of people who are waiting to return to their homes or, i f they have returned, still have important things that they need to repair or replace. With Loreto’s donation we will be able to help with things like replacing children’s beds, replacing unstable front steps and finishing electrical repairs. As a conference we have been very humbled by the generosity that people have shown and also by the courage shown by the affected people that we have met. Thank you once again to everyone at Loreto for their donations and their prayers. Tony O’Connor

This week and next we continue our “goods drive” to collect basic household items that are still needed by many families who continue in their struggle to recover from the January floods. I thank you for your ongoing generosity and support. This is just one of the many ways that each of us can make a difference. Thank you.

The Optimist’s Creed . . . we pray . . .

To be strong so that nothing can disturb our peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person we meet.

To make all our friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make our optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as we are about our own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every creature we meet a smile.

To give so much time to improvement of ourselves that we have no time to criticise others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,

and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Careers News

Careers Market Day Thank you to all the girls who attended the Career Market on Friday. It was a chance for students to access information on relevant courses and possible career pathways. Hopefully, the girls will be able to use the information gathered to help make informed decisions regarding subject choices and post school options.

QTAC Applications A reminder to Year 12 students to access the QTAC website at http://www.qtac.edu.au/OnlineServices/OnlineServices.html#ttt for the

online application. On line applications are due by September 30. Christine Jones - Careers Coordinator

Debating News Last Wednesday the 9.1 Debating team, comprised of Madeleine Lloyd, Rebecca Marshall, Hannah Radvan and Meghan Shannon, won the

Quarter Finals of the QDU Competition against Brisbane Boys’ Grammar. The girls’ arguments were solid and well worded and supported by

thorough research. The speeches were very confidently delivered and rebuttal was strong. We are very proud of each one of the girls.

Thanks go to the coach, Mrs Helen Radvan, who has devoted much time to the team and to Mr John McKinlay who helped the girls with

some points. Next Friday is the Semi-Finals. The girls debate against Brisbane State High at Gregory Terrace College at 7.00pm. It is a secret

topic. This is a very exciting time for Debating at Loreto and we invite the school community to attend the debate to support our girls. Good

luck Maddie, Rebecca, Hannah and Meghan! Rosemary O’Neill - Debating Coordinator

Grease Auditions

This week is an exciting one for everyone associated with “Grease” as it is the time for auditions. The girls have received their audition packs and the outline of the audition timings are below. Detailed information regarding the Audition process and requirements and the Audition Roster can be found on the College Intranet. We ask that students regularly check the Intranet for any changes.

Wednesday 31st August: General Chorus Auditions are being held on the MWC stage from 3.30 – 5.30pm. Those girls who are also auditioning for an acting only role will be the first group to audition and then they will head over to Room 407 until they are required to audition in Room 410. Acting only Auditions are being held in Room 410 from 3.30pm-5.30pm. All groups, except Group 1 will be asked to report first to Room 407 and wait until you are asked to come down to Room 410 to present your audition.

Thursday 1st September: Some students may be required to attend a second audition session in Room 410 from 3.30 – 5.30pm. This may not involve many students and these girls would be notified by email on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning if they are required. Students involved in Concert Band or Mr Lane-Richardson’s Hockey will not be required on this day.

Friday 2nd September: Dance auditions are being held from 4 – 5.30pm in Room 407. We wish all of the students from both Loreto and Villanova all the very best in the audition process. Call backs for LEADS will be posted on Monday 5th September. The Whole Cast including leads, chorus and dancers will be notified in Term 4 – date to be advised. Musicians and

Thank You - A big thank you to all members of Concert Band One and String Ensemble for your help with hosting the Primary Music Camp

on the weekend. The day was very successful with our biggest ever turnout of students who all seemed to have a great day! Special thanks to Liz Kehoe, Liz Davey, Maddi Young, Maria Papamanolis, Katelyn Feeney, Lauren Gleed, Sandy Vo, Rachel Farrah, Maddie Heinrich, Shannon Becquigny, Fiona McMahon and Caitlin Hunter for coming in early to tutor.

All Choirs - At the end of each year, Villanova College runs a big themed event that features professional guest soloists such as James

Morrison, the Grigoryan Brothers etc. This year the event will have a Broadway theme and feature singers Rachel Beck (Australian productions of “Les Miserable”, “Singing in the Rain”, “The Sound of Music” and “Beauty and the Beast”, TVs “It Takes Two”) and Ian Stenlake (“Guys and Dolls”, “The Pajama Game”, “Sleeping Beauty”, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, TVs “Stingers” and “Sea Patrol”). Villanova have invited members of Loreto’s Senior Choir to participate in a combined choir for this event. Rehearsals will be held initially at Loreto on Tuesday afternoons at our normal rehearsal time. Final rehearsals will then be held at Villanova all day on Monday 17 October (student free Panel Day) with the concerts on the evenings of Thursday 20 October and Friday 21 October. Senior Choir students in Years 10 - 12 who would like to participate, and who are able to commit to all these dates, are invited to become involved and initially just need to keep attending their regular Tuesday rehearsals. These performances will then become your end of year concert for 2011. All singers in Years 8 and 9, or in the older grades who can’t commit to the Broadway Concert schedule, will be invited to join a Massed Choir, rehearsing on Thursday mornings before school, to prepare repertoire for the Music Night on Friday 28 October.

Division Seven Final Round - Loreto College v’s All Hallows’ School

Congratulations to the coach, captain and the players on a terrific effort to defeat All

Hallows’ School last Thursday, 25 August, in a very closely matched game. What a team!

The game started well at 3:10pm with the meeting of all players to catch the bus at the

MWC. Everyone arrived quickly as requested and in good spirit, but no bus! A quick but

frantic call to the bus company confirmed the need for a change of plan to have all players

change before we left rather than at the venue. The lost time waiting for the bus meant we

were now travelling in peak school traffic and intersections were congested and progress

was slow. After a frustrating ride we arrived just in time for a quick warm up and the toss of

a coin. For the first minutes of the game both teams were evenly matched with neither

team dominating play. However, things changed at the sixteenth minute when Loreto

Page 7: 30 August 2011

Volume 5 - August 30, 2011 Page 7

Justice Sincerity FELICITY Verity Freedom

scored from a well executed field goal. From this point on Loreto never looked back and went on to score a second goal fifteen minutes later

from a ball slammed home from a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the first half. In the second half a desperate opposition came out

fighting applying a lot of pressure to eventually score their first goal after eight minutes from a field goal that soared at chest height into the

net. Feeling more confident, AHS worked hard to make further ground and neutralize Loreto’s lead. The valiant attempt by AHS was

unsuccessful despite the seven penalty corner opportunities presented to them. In the end AHS conceded two more goals during the

remaining minutes of the second half to finish the game well behind Loreto. At the completion of play Loreto won the game by defeating All

Hallows’ four goals to one. Goal scorers for the game were Georgia Hillas and Murphy Allendorf with two goals each. Theoutcome of the

game has resulted in the 2011 team being the first Loreto NAB Hockey team to take the honor of Division Seven finalist.

Unfortunately, the game did not go without incident with Jess receiving a nasty blow to the face resulting in injury in the second half. Apart

from a few stitches and aches and pains, she was back on board to tell her tale at school the next day. An excellent effort by all team

members and the coach, well done!

Thanks also goes to all the parents who came to support your daughters and cheer on the team, it’s wonderful to see you all there. Thanks

also to the students and supporters in general and to the teaching staff Bill Kenny, Matt Lourigan, Jeanette Little and Cheryl Hamilton for

your continued support and assistance.

Division 7 (Loreto College) v’s Division 8 (St Mary’s College) – Thursday, 1st September 2011

Our next game will be against the Division Eight finalist St Mary’s College this Thursday, 1st September. There will be a bus to and from the

game. The game will start at 4pm and it is expected we will be back at Loreto by 6:30pm. If Loreto win this round we will be one of the final

four teams in the state to play off for outright winner in a round robin competition to be held over three days starting on Friday 21st

October. Alan Lane-Richardson - NAB Hockey Coordinator

Physical Education Excursion to University of Queensland

On 18th August the Year 12 Physical Education classes took a bus to the University of Queensland to tour the Human Movement

Department. Our first session involved taking part in a variety of fitness tests, using some very technical equipment. Hannah Meecham did

both a marathon pace run and a VO2 Max test while Ms Wood, Georgia Dennis and Emily McKoy took part in challenging ATP-CP tests. We

were then informed of the courses and job opportunities available at the School of Human Movement. Lunch gave us the opportunity to

sample university life and the lolly shop provided us with some much needed energy for our final session. Using some more impressive

equipment we learned all about reaction time and responding to a stimulus. The excursion proved both informative and interesting and we

all enjoyed the day. Josephine Woolaston - Year 12 PE
