How to Enroll in Classes New Students Step One -- Apply for Admission New students should complete the online admission form located at www.mecc.edu/apply. If you are unable to access the online application, contact Enrollment Services at 276.523.2400 or visit the Enrollment Services Office on the first floor of Godwin Hall. Returning students who have not been at MECC during the last three years must resubmit an admission application. Step Two -- Apply for Financial Aid & Scholarships All full-time students should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov in order to qualify for scholarships and financial assistance. Individuals who need assistance completing the FAFSA can visit MECC’s Financial Aid Office on the first floor of Godwin Hall. MECC’s financial aid assistants are on hand to help students complete their FAFSA. The application should be completed several months in advance of the beginning of the semester in order to avoid delays in paying for college. Students, please note if you apply for financial aid less than two weeks prior to the start of classes, you will have to pay out-of-pocket for tuition and books and be reimbursed by financial aid later in the semester. Once you have completed your FAFSA, all students should apply for scholarships at MECC. Learn about the various MECC Foundation scholarship opportunities available for students by visiting the MECC website at www.mecc.edu/scholarships. You must submit the FAFSA before applying for scholarships at MECC. Step Three -- Submit High School/College Transcripts & Complete the Skills Assessment Submit official transcripts if you are a high school/GED graduate. Also, have official college transcripts to the MECC Admissions Office for all colleges attended. MECC requires an assessment in reading, writing, and math skills PRIOR to registration for the first-time student and/or for the student desiring to take English or Math courses. Students must have completed an application to MECC and have a Student ID number in order to complete the test. The Virginia Placement Test (VPT) is a free, untimed computer test. The VPT test is offered between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday in the MECC Testing Center located in Holton Hall, Room 138. Access to a computerized calculator is available when test questions permit. Please allow 3 hours for testing. To access test preparation materials, please visit www.mecc.edu/testing. Step Four -- Meet with an Advisor Students will be contacted by MECC to set up an appointment with an advisor. Your advisor will assist you with your first course selections and registering for classes. Step Five – Access your MECC email account All registered students will be assigned an email account. If you need assistance with your email account, please contact MECC’s technology office at 276.523.2400. Step Six -- Pay your Tuition Pay your tuition and fees by the due date. You can make tuition payments either in person or online via MECC Online. Failure to pay your tuition balance by the due date will result in your removal from your registered courses. Step Seven -- Obtain your Photo ID & Parking Permit Obtain your student photo ID at the Center for Student Outreach and Success in Holton Hall. Register for your parking permit at the MECC Business Office located on the first floor of Godwin Hall. Step Eight -- Purchase your Books The Mountain Empire Community College Bookstore, located in Holton Hall, carries textbooks and educational supplies for all college courses. The bookstore also offers MECC merchandise and food vouchers for the Red Fox Grill. Step Nine -- Attend New Student Seminar (SDV 100) and Come to Class!
Returning Students: Returning students should meet with their advisor prior to registration. Your advisor will assist you with selecting classes. Check with the Student Services Office 276.523.2400 if
you do not know the name of your advisor. Returning students may also enroll online. Log on to MECC Online at www.mecc.edu to register for classes. If you do not have access
to the web from home, you may enroll at Enrollment Services on the first floor of Godwin Hall.
How to Pay Tuition and Fees Students may pay at VCCS SIS/MECC Online with VISA or MasterCard. Payment in person can be made by cash, check, money order, VISA, or MasterCard at the Business Office
on the first floor of Godwin Hall. Personal checks are payable to MECC for the exact amount of the tuition and fees. Payment for students receiving financial aid is automatically
deducted from the student’s financial aid amount. Any balance can be paid by one of the methods above.
Payment Deadlines Students who enroll during the Priority Enrollment period (April 6- August 27) must pay all tuition and fees by August 27, 2015. Payments not received by this date will result in
students being dropped from enrolled coursework. Students enrolling on or after August 27, 2015 must pay tuition on the day of enrollment. For assistance with the enrollment
process, please contact Enrollment Services at 276.523.7474.
Tuition Payment Plan To help you meet your educational expenses, MECC offers a convenient budget plan. Students can pay tuition and fees through an automatic monthly deduction from a
checking, savings, or credit card account. For more information, contact the MECC Business office at 276.523.7475 or go to http://www.mycollegepaymentplan.com/mecc.

Reading the Class Schedule Orientation Most video and web classes require some form of orientation. Orientation is used to give students important information about the course. Following are examples of the different types of orientation: Online Orientation, email instructor at (email address) between (dates) - students must send instructor an email introducing themselves at some time during the dates given. The instructor will respond with the information needed for the class. On-Campus Orientation, Day, Date, Time, Room - orientation will be held on campus on the specified day, date, time, and room. If students are unable to attend orientation on the specified date and time, which varies by class, they need to contact the instructor.
Video Classes Classes with section numbers that include a “V” are Video classes. These classes require students to check out the necessary videos from the Wampler Library (student ID required). Students will then utilize the videos, textbook, and Blackboard to complete the required coursework as stated in the class syllabus. These classes require students to take tests/exams in a proctored environment.
Web Classes Classes with section numbers that include a “W” are Web classes. In courses offered in this delivery format, all instruction is web-based.
Compressed Video Classes with section numbers that include a “C” are Compressed Video classes. These are courses delivered via video to two or more sites. Students may be at a different location than the instructor.
Independent Study Classes with section numbers that include an “X” are Independent Study classes. These are highly individualized, planned studies.
Hybrid Classes with section numbers that include an “H” are Hybrid classes. These classes require students to attend class on-campus less often by utilizing on-line components that can be completed at home.
