    1/1

Isaw a number of movies over theholidays, and two out of threewere outstanding. I dont think

Ive used that word to describe a moviein a very long time. Its been a tough

year at themovies withlots of ho humflicks.

First up,Chronicles ofNarnia: TheVoyage of theDawn Tread-er (rated PG).The latest in-stallment inthis mega-movie fran-chise is myleast favorite. The first moviewas a disap-pointment, butI liked the sec-

ond and gave it a rating of 4 out of 5.Unfortunately, the third was evenworse than the first.

This movie is disappointing on manyfronts; the acting is poor, the 3D was aterrible afterthought, and the storylinedrags unnecessarily. If you are a hugefan of the other two movies, then thisone might be worth seeing in the the-

ater, otherwise, skip it and most defi-nitely dont bother paying extra to seeit in 3D. At best Id give this chapter ofthe Chronicles a 2.5 out of 5.

The Cohen Brothers are at it again, and this time theyve decided to trytheir very competent hands at a west-ern. True Grit is not a remake of thefamous John Wayne movie of the samename, but rather a retelling of the sto-ry as it was first written in the 1968book, True Grit, by Charles Portis.

This is the story of a 14-year-old girlnamed Mattie Ross who hires a cranky, callous and alcoholic U.S. Marshallnamed Rooster Cogburn to find theman who killed her father. Gifted new-comer Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie.

Jeff Bridges, a man who is seldomupstaged, portrays Rooster Cogburn, but in this movie Steinfeld is the star. Ihave high hopes that she will be nomi-nated for a Best Actress award andBridges should snag a nomination forBest Supporting Actor. The movie alsoshould be a shoe-in for the Best Picturecategory.

This movie feels like a true western, and with a PG13 rating it plays out likean old fashion western without the un-necessary graphic violence portrayed inso many movies today. This isnt to saythat the film doesnt have some violentscenes, but for the most part the rating

is appropriate and I can safely recom-mend it to most people. I give TrueGrit 4.5 out of 5.

I have saved the best until last. TheKings Speech (rated R for language)is the true story of King George VI ofGreat Britain and his relationship withhis speech therapist Lionel Logue. Col-in Firth plays the king, and if he doesnot walk away with Best Actor at theAcademy Awards it will be a travesty.

Jeffery Rush aptly plays the uncom-plicated and likable Lionel Logue, whohelps the king work to overcome hisstammer. He should receive a Best Sup-porting Actor nominee for his work inthis movie. Helen Bonham Carter playsthe kings wife, and their love for oneanother is palpable, and a large part ofthe films story.

The Kings Speech has every com-ponent of a Best Picture, including im-peccable directing and cinematography,a captivating storyline, witty dialogueand emotional depth. Its hard to ex-plain exactly what is so moving aboutthis movie, but I can tell you thatFirths performance of this troubledking is so spot-on it made my own jawhurt from watching the mans on scenestruggle to get out his words.

It seems an odd way to describe sucha film, but I must use the word beauti-ful. The Kings Speech is beautifuland by far the best film Ive seen allyear. I happily and without reservationgive it 5 out of 5.
