    Units of Measurement

Medicines are usuallymeasured in milligrams (mg)and milliliters (mL)

    This section will explain each

    of these units

For Medicine, We Need Small Units:milligram (mg)

20 grains of salt weigh about 1 mg

A paperclip weighs about 1000 mg

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    15/53

    Important Points of MedicineStrengths:

1.The strength of a medicine is alwayslisted with the active ingredient

    (generic name)

    2.If a medicine has 2 active ingredients,

then it will have 2 strengths: onestrength per active ingredient

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    16/53

    Important Points:

For tablets and suppositories, strength is expressed in mg

Strength indicates how muchactive ingredient is contained

    within a single tablet orsuppository

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    17/53

Important Point#1: The Strength of aMedication is Always Listed with the ActiveIngredient on the Package

    1 active ingredient

    Quinine,250 mg

This means there is 250 mg of quinine in each tablet

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    18/53

Important Point#2: There is a Strength for eachActive Ingredient in a Medicine

2 active ingredients: both active ingredientscontained in a single tablet

    sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, 500mg-25mg

This means each SP tablet contains 500mg of sulfadoxine

    and 25mg of pyrimethamine

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    19/53

Important Point#2: There is a Strength for eachActive Ingredient in a Medicine

2 active ingredients: separate tablets per

    active ingredients Artesunate (50mg) / Mefloquine (250mg)

    250 mg Mefloquine per tablet

    50 mg ofArtesunate per tablet

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    20/53

Why is the Strength Always Listed withthe Active Ingredient?

The same medicine can come in several differentstrengths

Example:Artesunate tablets are available in severaldifferent strengths.

    Artesunate

    10 mg

    Artesunate

    40 mg

    Artesunate

    100 mg

    Artesunate

    Activity

Using the antimalarial medicines from thefirst exercise, record the strength on theActivity Sheet.

Do you notice anything different betweenthe strengths of the first set ofantimalarials and the strengths of the

The active ingredient alone may be written as base onthe packaging

    Hydrochloride

    Phosphate

    Sulfate

From what you have seen, how does this extrachemical effect the strength?

    Important Points about Strengths of

    Medicines with an Extra Chemical

    Some Examples:

    Artesunate (200mg) + Mefloquine hydrochloride(275mg) equivalent to

    Artesunate (200mg) + Mefloquine [base] (250mg)

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength

    31/53

    Which Strength Should I Record?

You should record the base strength only

    Mefloquine, 250 mg

    And not

    Mefloquine hydrochloride, 275 mg

    WHY?

  • 7/30/2019 3. Dosage Forms and Strength
