Cultural Enrichment Program

▪ Inspired by the late Katherine Dunham: legendary dancer, choreographer, actress, writer, teacher and anthropologist

▪Goal is to provide an outlet for interested women to redirect negative energy in a positive way through the performing arts

▪A multi-disciplinary arts program devoted to the study, appreciation, and celebration of diverse cultures in solving social problems created by poverty, inequity, gender bias, and racism

Mission of the Program▪Provide the students an opportunity to earn high school elective credit

▪Provide a cultural awareness and appreciation through the arts

▪ Increase the students’ knowledge and appreciation of the historical significance of the arts in each represented culture

▪Teach students how to use movement and dance exploration as an outlet for expression as well as a stress reliever

▪Enhance the self esteem and self image of the students

▪Provide community members a powerful way to give back, be a role model, and positively impact the women of the facility

Program Structure▪Program will be facilitated by expert volunteers in each of the cultural arts areas and has been approved through the Nevada Department of Corrections process for an early 2019 implementation

▪Program will be offered once per week for two hours

▪Program will take place between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

▪The first hour of each session will be movement and dance exploration

▪The second hour of each session will be the cultural arts component-poetry, drama, arts or music

▪All participants will be actively involved for 32 hours

Elective Credit Opportunity▪ Students who wish to earn high school elective credit may complete an additional 28 hours of work to do so

▪Each of the 16 sessions will include a reflective writing requirement mandating an additional 1.5 hours to complete

▪There will be a final project requirement, which will require three hours for planning and preparation and an additional hour for a live presentation to be judged by the expert volunteers
