JANUARY
The revitalization of Beckwith Street is underway. The project includes the replacement of 19th century water and sewer infrastructure along with the separation of combined sewer systems. It also includes the construction of a newly separated
storm drainage trunk system. Above ground, the project includes a complete modernization of the roadway, including the full reconstruction of three travel lanes, two parallel parking lanes, three new traffic signal controllers and signal heads meeting
the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, upgraded LED street lighting, generous sidewalks and sidewalk furniture. The street will also feature dedicated cycle-tracks to meet the goal of a complete street design.

Heritage House Museum is a community museum and historic house, depicting the upper middle class life of the Bates Family circa 1865-1875 and featuring a permanent collection of Smiths Falls artifacts, traveling exhibits and art shows. A visit offers unique mirror-image facades, an indoor brick bake oven, period rooms, exhibition galleries and a famous two-story privy. The grounds are located on the picturesque Rideau

A Building Permit is required to begin construction, demolition, additions or renovations on your property. As part of the Building Permit process, the Town of Smiths Falls must review your plans to ensure they comply with a number of
requirements, including the Ontario Building Code, and local By-laws. Applications for building permits can be found at www.smithsfalls.ca or at the municipal office and must be submitted in person, as fees are due upon filing.

WHITE (LARGE-ITEM) PICK-UP
Household Hazardous WasteAny hazardous waste (old paint, car batteries, oil, dry cell batteries, cleaners, propane cylinders, aerosol cans, antifreeze, etc.) can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Site at 122 Patterson Cres., Carleton Place.
The site is open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. between May 16, 2020 and September 5, 2020. This is a free service to all Smiths Falls residents. You may be required to show identification and proof of residency. You can also visit www.makethedrop.ca for an extensive list of materials that can now be recycled through the Orange Drop program and all local ‘take back’ partners. We are recycling batteries at the Library, Arena and Town Hall as well.
Construction WasteConstruction waste is not collected at curbside by the town. The REAL Deal Reuse Store will accept good quality drywall, lumber and other construction materials. The nearest approved collection facility for construction waste is Glenview Iron & Metal 613-283-5230.
Public WorksPublic Works Emergency after hours number: 613-284-1430 for water and sewer/road related issues.
GarbageGarbage Tags: Each week you can put out two complimentary bags of garbage, any additional bag requires a tag. Tags are $3.00 each and can be purchased at the Town Hall or at the Customer Service counter at Andress’ Your Independent Grocer.
Large items require two tags. They include: furniture, kitchen appliances, and items that do not fit in a garbage bag. You must contact the Town in order for these items to be picked up.
Any carpet must be cut into 6-foot lengths and tied in a manageable bundle.
White GoodsAny metal items are subject to special pickup. This pickup occurs on the last Friday of each month (indicated as white large-item pick-up on the calendar) unless otherwise noted. White large-item pick-ups include stoves, freon free fridges/freezers, washers and dryers. Fridges and freezers must have a Freon Free sticker prior to removal. This can be done by the following business: Glenview Iron & Metal 613-283-5230.
Tire Disposal A provincial program now places the responsibility of used tire disposal onto the manufacturers and importers of tires. Residents can contact local tire dealerships to determine if they recycle tires.
Paint Disposal Disposal of empty dry paint cans can go into your yellow recycling bin with the lid off. Partially used paint cans can go to Rona, 136 Lombard St., 613-283-4411. Please call Rona first to confirm availability.
Electronic Waste Electronic waste items can be recycled easily at many facilities located here in Smiths Falls. Visit our partners at: Apollo Computers: 3 Russell St. W. 613-284-2446Computer components and cell phones ONLYREAL Deal Reuse Store: 85 William Street W. 613-283-7999
Acceptable items for recycling include: monitors, TV’s, desktop computers, lap tops, printers, copiers, telephone answering machines, cell phones, audio/video devices and camcorders.
Composting Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. from May 9, 2020 to November 21, 2020. The site is located at #3514 along Highway 43 (east of Hillcrest Cemetery).
All leaves must be in brown paper bags and free from garbage. Brush must be bundled and no branches larger than 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter will be accepted.
Feel free to take some free compost for your gardens when available. Backyard composters are available for purchase at Town Hall.
Swap DaysPlace your used items on the curb to give-away. If your items haven’t been picked up by Sunday, please bring them back inside.
