All Aboard to Get Back on Track!!!
The Granger PTO will hold its 10th annual Granger Challenge this May. Unfortunately, we cannothave our normal walk-a-thon due to continuing restrictions, but we need your support to Get Back onTrack for the 2021-2022 school year. The Granger Challenge is the PTO’s largest fundraiser of theyear. Donations raised during the Granger Challenge are used to enrich our children’s schoolexperience and have previously funded all those events that we missed so much this year –Breakfast with Santa, Granger Talent Show, Science Olympiad, 5th grade picnic, and Mother-Son andFather-Daughter events. Donations also assist with classroom technology and speaker events likeCOSI. We are hoping for a fun 2021-2022 school year, and we need you ALL ABOARD to get usback on track!!!
Information will be sent home with your student(s) on Monday May 3. Be sure to mark yourcalendars for donation turn in dates (5/7, 5/14 and 5/21). Small prizes will be awarded each turn inday. The highest collecting class will receive a special extra recess experience. The highestcollecting students from each grade will get to blast an awesome teacher with silly string!!!
We understand that Covid-19 has brought many challenges to our Granger families, so we areasking you to donate whatever amount you can comfortably contribute. As a guideline, in previousyears, we have challenged our students to obtain pledges totaling $20/$30. Corporate donations arealso welcomed.
As part of our event, we will have three fun, theme days that align with our turn-in dates:
Turn in Day #1: 5/7 - The Green Hornet (wear your Highland Spirit Wear)
Turn in Day #2: 5/14 – The Polar Express (wear your school appropriate Pajamas)
Turn in Day #3: 5/21 – The High-Speed Rail (wear your hair crazy!!)

2nd/5th GRADE ASSESSMENT
Highland second and fifth graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) during thesecond week of May. There is no preparation for the test except for a good night's rest and a
nutritious breakfast. If you have questions regarding your child's specific testing schedule pleasecontact the classroom teacher.
The CogAT is administered to all second and fifth graders and is used as our grade-level screener forsuperior cognitive gifted identification. We inform our students that the test is a way for us to learn
about their problem solving skills.
ONE DISTRICT ONE BOOKBeginning April 30th, all Highland elementary students will once again participate in One District, One
Book (ODOB). All elementary students will be reading the same book at the same time. TheHighland Foundation has generously funded the One District One Book grant for 7 years! Over 1,354
elementary students thoroughly enjoyed their experience last year with ODOB thanks to theFoundation! This is an extremely worthwhile and engaging program, aiming for our students to readwith their family members on a daily basis throughout the month. With ODOB, we wish to bring thefocus back to engaging parents and students through a shared reading experience (mission of thenon-profit group Read to Them). Each student and staff member will receive a copy of the book, integration of activities into the classroom, teacher read alouds and choice boards for students
with exciting prizes for their efforts.

5th GRADE PARENTS:
5th Grade to 6th Grade Transition Program
Next school year Highland Middle School will be running a new transition program for incoming 6thgrade students called WEB. WEB stands for Where Everybody Belongs. This program welcomes new
6th graders and makes them feel comfortable throughout the entire first year of their middle schoolexperience. Members of next year's 8th grade class were selected by strict criteria and trained by
HMS staff to act as positive role models, motivators, and more importantly, leaders. These 8th gradementors, along with staff, will guide the 6th graders to discover what it takes to be successful inmiddle school. The goal of our WEB program is to help students gain confidence in their new
surroundings, create and maintain healthy school habits, and feel a connection to the school whilereducing anxiety, bullying, and discipline issues. We are extremely excited to be offering this programwith many thanks going to the Highland Foundation for their support. You will hear more information
about this amazing WEB program as we get closer to the start of next school year.
