DESCRIPTION

The state of economies everywhere means that you need to be ready to negotiate all of the time. Anything less than powerful and effective can mean failure and possibly bankruptcy. There also isn't any way for you to know who is going to be sitting across from you when you sit down to the table. When you find yourself facing someone who is highly experienced, not only do you have your work cut out for you, you have no room for making errors. Negotiations are based upon a few different factors, like your current mindset as well as your level of preparedness. You need to understand everything about your opponent that is relevant to your situation. They have probably learned all of the information that exists about your business (and you). There simply is no excuse for failing to be prepared, so here are three proven negotiating tips that work.

simple but effective business negotiation

Successful negotiators are not afraid to directly ask for what they want These are people who

understand how to be assertive professionally and in a manner that others wont find alienating

You can really help yourself by telling yourself that there isnt anything that isnt up for negotiation

When you have that belief then you will not be placing limitations on the outcome Before a

negotiation can be successful everyone involved needs to understand that they are able to get

what they want Of if some point has been conceded they need to believe whatever they gave up

was worth it Once you state exactly what you want then the rest is simply figuring out a way to

make that happen

Personality traits and personal values play large roles in how people do their own negotiations

Some professional negotiators are determined to win with no regard to what they have to do to

the other person to get there This mindset typically reflects a win-no win outcome with the

opposite being a win-win

You then need to figure out the best approach for yourself and how to succeed with it A win-no

win strategy will mean you have to be very skilled at negotiating Otherwise ruthlessness is what

you have to display and this isnt always an available option for you The win-win strategy will be

best served when you put yourself in the shoes of the other side If you want to have a win-win

outcome you need to understand the position the other side is on as well as the point of view

they have

If you want to make sure your negotiations have a buffer set up 24 hours of time at least to ask

us if you need it Consulting with others is one way to get this extra time Since you are going to

make all the final decisions this is simply a useful tactic If you do need to buy the time then this

is an exaggeration or lie that you simply have to make You could say you have a partner or

advisors that you need to consult with before making a decision Just tell them they like to stay

out of the picture and that you do all the negotiations So if you do make all the decisions never

tell them the truth about your situation Have the right perspective on the business or people with

whom youre negotiating You have to remain positive and professional avoiding any emotional

bonding whatsoever Beware all that appears to be innocent such as informal and personal chit-

chat Your frame of mind should be that any small talk is simply a way to open you up and take

advantage of you in someway
