It's no secret that Upwork is the big player when it comes to finding

published and ready-to-go freelance and virtual assistant work online.

But where else can you go hunting for the perfect remote working

opportunities that fit your current skills, experience, availability and income

requirements?

Good news! We've done the groundwork for you and put this list together.

But one [very important!] word of caution…

In our experience and observations:

Reactively responding to job posts you find online can allow you to

secure work sooner (especially when you're starting out), but...

Proactive outreach, building your referral base and online networking

will allow you to secure work at a comparatively higher rate, and on your

own terms.

There is definitely a place for both approaches. So think of this list like your

springboard into the world of location independent working, and gradually

build up your experience and referral base as you go.

As you're searching through each of these sites, focus on the process of

filtering and eliminating to get down to the one or two jobs that are perfect

for you.

And even if your plan is to start your career with proactive outreach and

networking right from the very beginning, you'll still be able to use the sites

within this guide as part of your initial research phase - to find out which

services and software systems are in demand, and what kinds of business

owners are already savvy about working with virtual team members.

It just takes one — finding your very first short-term or long-term gig — and

then the door is wide open from there.

1. Upworkwww.upwork.com

Upwork is the largest online work marketplace where clients and freelancers

connect globally. I began my virtual assistant career on Elance, which became

Upwork in 2015. In June 2016, Upwork introduced a sliding service fee

structure, starting at 20% for the first $500 that you bill to each client. Due to

this high fee level at the beginning of a client relationship, I'd recommend

being really deliberate about the way in which you'll choose to leverage it in

building your online career.

I loved having this platform as my springboard into the world of online work as

a brand new virtual assistant, before I had any experience or a network to draw

on. Other freelancers leverage Upwork to build a long-term premium rate

career as a specialist. I think either of these approaches can work brilliantly -

but I wouldn't recommend hanging out in the 'middle ground' on Upwork for an

extended period of time, servicing multiple clients on a short-term basis.

The Freelancing Platforms

2. Remote.comwww.remote.com

On Remote.com you're able to create a nicely-styled personal profile, including

your specific skills. The system then matches you up with freelance, part-time

and full-time remote jobs, based on the skills you've listed.

It's free to create a profile, and to apply to jobs that you're matched up with.

You can also upgrade to a Pro membership for $19/month, which allows you to

apply to any other job listed on the site.

There are other freelancing platforms out there with a similar structure to

Upwork and Remote.com - like Freelancer, Guru, PeoplePerHour and

iFreelance. Upwork and Remote.com are the only two I'd personally use if I was

starting my VA career again right now, that's why they're the two specific

freelancing platforms included within this guide.

Debbie-Jo Dutton and the team at Remote Work Hub

curate this database of remote jobs on a daily basis.

4. Jobspressowww.jobspresso.co

Comb through the listings in the Marketing, Support,

Writing and Various categories.

Virtual Job BoardsVirtual job boards are different to thefreelancing platforms in that the clientcollaboration isn't managed through the siteitself. These platforms publish and/or curatevirtual jobs on behalf of online and offlinecompanies. Sometimes they'll charge a fee tothe company/client for posting the job orsubscribing to the service, but in all cases thereisn't a fee applicable for you as thefreelancer/employee.

5. PowerToFlywww.powertofly.com

The PowerToFly platform has a strong focus on tech roles for women, but there's also a

Sales and Marketing category where you'll find excellent full-time and part-time remote

roles. The roles listed here usually require a couple of years of experience. So if you're

brand new to the industry you can use this for some initial research to help determine

the online career path and skills-development focus that's going to work best for you.

6. Remotivewww.remotive.io

Review the Marketing and Support categories. You'll find that many of these roles

include a techie type element, but not all of them, so read thoroughly!

7. Remote OKwww.remoteok.io

Review the category labelled Non-Tech for roles in digital marketing, content creation

and customer support.

8. Support Driven Jobswww.jobs.supportdriven.com

Customer support roles that can involve getting skilled up in a particular software

application that you'd be helping people with. Look for the roles that are listed as

'Remote' rather than based in a specific city.

Review the Customer Service category.

11. We Work Remotelywww.weworkremotely.com

We Work Remotely is operated by the 37Signals team, well-known for creating the

project management app called Basecamp. Review the Customer Support, Marketing

and Other jobs. The Customer Support jobs on this site will often have a bit of a techie

element to them (ie. knowing HTML and CSS for example) but not always, so read

thoroughly!

12. Letsworkremotelywww.letsworkremotely.com

In addition to the searchable job board on the website, Letsworkremotely also have a

Facebook group that you can join to keep up to date with their latest remote job

listings.

The CYLL Network is a paid membership community

hosted by digital marketing pro, Julie Stoian.

Membership includes access to incoming job

opportunities for digital marketing implementers and

consultants. Potential clients submit their

requirements through this hiring form here

https://cyllnetwork.com/hire, indicating whether or

not they're happy to work with a beginner, and those

job opportunities are then posted directly into the

private Facebook group and Slack channel for the

network. I'm currently a CYLL member, so can confirm

that the quality and frequency of job opps coming

through is excellent. Potential clients often indicate

that they're willing to work with beginners. There's a

7-day membership trial for $1, followed by month-to-

month membership at $49/month.

Online MarketingJobsThese sites are a combination of paidmembership communities and job boards.They're focused on connecting clients withonline marketing service providers specifically.

14. CloudPeepswww.cloudpeeps.com

CloudPeeps is a high quality freelance marketplace, matching 'Peeps' with established

clients who are looking for dedicated marketing, content, social media and community

management support.

15. Growth Geekswww.growthgeeks.com

Growth Geeks is another platform which requires some digital marketing client work

experience. This is a great site to research for ideas on the specific client services you

can offer in online marketing implementation.

16. Inbound Remote Marketing Jobswww.inbound.org/jobs/remote-marketing-jobs

Search for jobs with the location listed as Remote, Anywhere or Work at Home.

17. CMX Community Management Jobswww.cmxhub.com/jobs

Many of the roles listed on this site aren't location independent - they're based in

offices within specific cities - but scan through to look for the open jobs with the

location listed as Anywhere.

Don't Panic Management offer day-to-day implementation services for their clients in

executive assistance, content marketing, podcast production, social media and webinar

management. You can submit a detailed expression of interest form directly through

their site to let them know all about you and the specific skills you'd have to offer as a

team member.

19. Grow My Teamwww.growmyteam.com.au/job-seekers

Review the Current Openings page for part-time and full-time roles that you can

submit an application for right away. Because Grow My Team operate globally, you will

find roles listed at the low end of the rate scale, however they do offer roles at wide

range of rates, depending on your specific skills. Don't hesitate to get in touch with

them to discuss your specific situation and requirements.

Companies Hiring Virtual TeamThese companies contract virtual team members on an ongoing basis. Theygenerally offer a comparatively lower rate than what you may be able tocharge for the same services by reaching out to your own clientsindependently. However, the ability to start right away, with no marketing,no network and an enjoyable, stable source of work could be just whatyou're looking for.

For US based VAs. Hourly rates are between $13 and $18 per hour, depending on the

mix of clients and services you're working on.

Worldwide101 team members earn $15-$20/hr depending on skills, experience and

experience. Most of their consultants are employees with full-time benefits, but they

Scribendi hire remote editors and proofreaders from all over the world. As a team

member you have free access to their training programs.

25. Your VA (New Zealand)www.yourva.co.nz/careers

Justine Parsons is the very experienced VA who heads up the Your VA team, and a

personal friend of mind. She's awesome! If you're successful in the application process

for joining the team, you'll be matched up to work directly with clients. You don't need

to be based in NZ to apply, but you would work with clients during NZ business hours.

If you're working part-time hours this can work in multiple time zones. The hourly rate

as a team member is in the range of $25-$30 NZD.

Canadian Virtual Gurus hire administrative virtual assistants and also marketing gurus

to provide client services in things like social media marketing and Google AdWords.

HireMyMom allows you to preview recent job posts. Then to access all listings and

apply, you can subscribe for $29.95 per 90 days. I keep hearing excellent things from

VAs about the quality and frequency of job posts listed on this site. I'd definitely be

prioritizing this one if I was to start my VA career again now.

IVAA offers a trial membership option at $44/90 days and an annual membership at

$137/year. As a member you're able to view and apply to projects that have been

submitted through their RFP system by clients who are looking for a VA.

This jobs board is attached to the long-established

authority site and community at ProBlogger. You'll find

a large volume of high quality job posts listed here.

The writing jobs on BloggingPro often include digital

marketing agencies who are looking for freelance

content writers in specific topic areas.

Freelance WritingJobsIf you plan to specialize in writing services,these sites will not only help you to find clientwork but also to figure out the variousdifferent types of writing services you can beoffering, and how to describe them.

If you don't plan to offer writing services inyour freelance career, you can also use thesesites to source excellent content writers onbehalf of your clients.

The Word Geeks team have let me know that they're specifically interested in these

The Virtual Biz Connect directory is operated by Tina Forsyth, a consultant herself with

many years experience supporting online business owners with various services

including Infusionsoft and virtual team recruitment. She is very well connected in the

online biz owner community, particularly among well-established online coaches,

speakers and authors. Tina once interviewed me for a potential role with one of her

clients - I just missed out on that one :-) but nonetheless can confirm that she knows

her stuff when it comes to virtual team building and is a wonderful person.

36. The Freelance Collectivewww.thefreelancecollective.com.au

The Freelance Collective is specifically for Australian creative freelancers, including

virtual assistants. Become a paid member at $8.18/month or $90/year for access to list

your public profile on their gorgeous site. As a member, you'll also have access to the

private members-only Facebook group to network with Australian freelance colleagues.

Super smart! Web designers and developers are always being asked for referrals to

awesome VAs!

Freelancer DirectoriesThese sites don't list specific virtual jobs but allow you to publish yourpersonal online work profile in their directory. Through their own marketing,these sites attract potential clients and help to set an expectation as to thequality standard within that freelancer community.

Well-established jobs board for telecommuting and

freelance work in a wide range of service areas. There

are monthly, quarterly and yearly paid membership

options for you as the job searcher.

Virtual Vocations offers both a free and paid account

option to view the database of telecommuting jobs.
