GLOBAL LUXURY travel network Virtuoso has determined2018 will be the year for discovering less-visiteddestinations. The company's 2018 Luxe Report, whichforecasts what to expect in travel for the year ahead, showsthe desire for unspoiled natural beauty continuing tomotivate travellers. The annual report reveals consumerpreferences in high-end and experiential travel, asdiscerned from a comprehensive survey of the network’stravel advisors worldwide. Five must-take trips for 2018, according to the

company include: Cold is hot. Seasoned travellers in search of freshdestinations are setting their sights on chillier climes.Iceland continues to surge in popularity, cruisers areenthusiastic about Alaska, and adventurers aboutAntarctica and the Arctic.

Exploring new destinations is the year’s top tripmotivator, and travellers are embracing the opportunityto push beyond their comfort zone. Advisors suggest thatpeople check out at least one new place a year, andchallenge themselves to try something unexpected duringtheir sojourn: swim with marine life like dolphins ormanta rays, go zip-lining or ballooning, or take ahelicopter tour.

Connecting with family through travel. After topping thelist of trends since 2010, multi-generational travel hasfirmly established itself as a travel niche. Following closebehind is travel with immediate family, also a consistenttrend that will carry forward in 2018. Whether renting aEuropean villa for a celebration with loved ones, cruisingto the Galapagos Islands, or snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef, a family trip creates lifelongmemories, strengthens bonds and plays a pivotal role inchildhood education.

Experience Africa. From culturally rich South Africa, also2018’s top adventure destination, to the wilds ofBotswana and Kenya, to the souks of Morocco, Africa isone of the world’s most diverse continents. Advisors say asafari is an integral part of the African experience, particularly with wildlife preservation a priority for today’ssustainably savvy travellers.

Be a traveller rather than a tourist. Immersiveexperiences not found in a guidebook or brochure, opportunities to meet locals, wandering neighbourhoodsand making spontaneous discoveries are the best ways toexperience a destination, according to the company'sadvisors. Whether it is wine tasting, or learning atraditional craft or a new language, travellers will beseeking out the true culture of that area they are visiting.

PREMIER HOLIDAYS took a group of agents on a ten-night fam trip to South Africa recently. The group spent several nights in Cape Townand enjoyed a visit to Inverdoorn Day Safari to spot the Big 5, before heading to Hermanus and Stellenbosch, where activities included afoodies on foot tour and wine tasting via the Franschhoek Wine Tram. THE TRAVEL sector is being urged toinvest in artificial intelligence (AI) toimprove the booking process, as morethan a quarter of UK holidaymakersfind it too difficult to pick the perfectdestination according to mobiletechnology group, Apadmi. The company found that 27% of UK

travellers think there’s too much choicewhen deciding where to go and notknowing what to expect from their trip orwhether it will suit their tastes, theystruggle to find the ideal destination. Itsurveyed a total of 1,000 people who’vetaken a holiday in the last 12 months andfindings revealed that 56% of travellersalso struggle to compare prices fordifferent holiday packages, and figure outexactly what they get for the price. For 28% of Brits booking their holidays,

travel brochures and websites don’t makethe choice any easier. Consumers claimthey don’t go into enough detail about thehotels and destinations listed, while 29%

find the images of resorts and locationsto be misleading. A fifth (21%) of consumers are now

calling on travel agents to invest in AIinnovations to help simplify bookingoptions and provide tailoredsuggestions. Digital chat bots arealready widely used in the industry. They can ask a series of qualifyingquestions and use existing customerdata, such as their browsing optionsand any details captured during face-to-face consultations, to suggesthighly-personalised choices. Nick Black, CEO of Apadmi, said: “It

can be tricky to search for a holidayunless you have a specific destinationin mind – you might know you want arelaxing break or a city getaway, buthow do you know which resorts offerthe right facilities and accommodationthat will suit you? “Often this requires a lot of

research by the customer, comparing

different options, discounts andwebsites. This is a lengthy andoverwhelming process, and as ourresearch suggests, travel agentscan, and should, help solve this conundrum. “Our report found that

holidaymakers are increasinglylooking for travel providers who givethem a more personalised service tohelp narrow down their options. AI isthe most effective way to do this. “Embracing this technology would

remove many of the irrelevant travelsuggestions many customers arecurrently presented with in the mass-market travel sector. It would alsoenhance customer service in-store, astravel agents can use data collectedthrough AI to pick up where thecustomer left their plans online, providing that seamless, multi-channel experience that’s currently insuch high demand from consumers.”

Headwater offers new choices formulti-generational family getawaysNEW FOR summer 2018, Headwater is launching a selection ofnew holidays designed to appeal to multi-generational familieslooking to enjoy quality time together in a new and fun way.Offering a crafted mix of hiking and biking options, the new

IN NOVEMBER 2015, the Palmanove-Magaluf HotelAssociation, Calvia Town Hall and Meliá Hotels Internationalpledged to transform the area of Magaluf through acollaborative five-year regeneration plan. Two years later, thedestination is making headway in achieving its five keyobjectives as the Palmanove-Magaluf Hotel Associationreveals its summer season results and a summary of howinvestment in the area is starting to have an impact. The quality of hotels in Magaluf has continued to

improve, with 60% ranked as four- or five-star propertiesand a total of 30,000 beds now available in total in thedestination. Average per room, per night prices have alsoincreased in line with the investment in hotel facilities toensure a high-quality product and total overnight staysincreased by 4.4% to almost 5.5 million in 2017, comparedto 2016. This increase in stays has also been attributed inpart to the opening of Magaluf’s first five-star property,VIVA Zafiro hotel, and the renovations of Meliá Calvia Beachand Sol Beach House Mallorca.Indicators of the destination’s transformation can be

seen when looking at the shifts in customer segmentation. This demonstrates a change in the area’s tourism model, influenced by the investment in high quality facilities andcustomer safety to make Magaluf an attractive familyholiday destination. Family and adult couples continue todominate the customer segment, representing 70% ofguest numbers – an increase of 13.23% compared to 2013.Young people, associated with Magaluf’s nightlife culture, now only represent 22% of the area’s overall visitors - adecrease of 7% when compared to figures seen in 2013.The UK has maintained its position as the primary tourist

market, representing 22% of all travellers to Mallorca and48% of Palmanove & Magaluf’s. Total numbers of British

tourists increased by 1% compared to 2016, totalling167,316 hotel stays, in spite of Brexit.Extending Magaluf’s season to a nine-month period,

running from March to November, is one of the keyobjectives in the destination’s five-year plan. Increasedsecurity, public order and the overall reputation of the areaalso remains a priority.Working in partnership with the local government and

Hotel Association of Palmanove-Magaluf, Meliá HotelsInternational has invested a total of more than 200 millionEuros in the refurbishment of its properties in the area tosupport the wider regeneration of the destination. Forsummer 2018, the hotel group will launch a new state-of-the-art shopping mall, offering underground car parkingspace in the centre of Magaluf, as well as introducing a newhotel – Sol House Calvia Beach - overlooking the beachfront, replacing the previously demolished Jamaica Hotel.Sebastián Darder, president of the hotel association,

said: “The destination aims to continue consolidating newquality product and the new customer segmentation, whichhas allowed us to increase occupancy, profitability, and thesocial and economic sustainability of Magaluf, as well ascontinuing to improve the reputation of the destinationamong adult travellers and families.“The destination continues to improve year after year. In

2017 we have presented a summary similar to that of theexcellent year in 2016, although with a greater number ofovernight stays, longer hotel opening periods, and a largernumber of jobs created. And, in spite of the relativelyfrequent news about events in Punta Ballena, a veryspecific street within the destination, we are also verysatisfied to report that the figures for crime, drunkennessand other public order issues remain in clear descent.”

Magaluf makes headway in regeneration plan to become more family friendly
