New Canaan is a unique community. It is hard to put into words what makes our Town so special.

Since 1977, the Community Foundation has worked to support New Canaan’s charitable

resources and ensure that New Canaan retains its extraordinary character. We empower

donors and nurture local nonprofits to improve the quality of life for our residents and our

neighbors. We teach the importance of philanthropy to the next generation of charitable

leaders. Our donors’ support and dedicated volunteer leadership make our efforts possible.

We are proud that our work in 2014 made our community stronger and more vibrant:

• 100% of all unrestricted contributions went out as grants in our main award cycle;

• Over $1.2 Million in high-impact grants and life-changing scholarships were awarded

to area nonprofits and local students;

• We launched our I ♥New Canaan photo contest and received 105 photos that

illustrate the many reasons we love this Town;

• Our professional development group for Executive Directors of New Canaan nonprofit

organizations convened quarterly to provide a valuable educational opportunity for local leaders;

• The Young Philanthropists program engaged 36 high school students in active learning about

giving and the role of nonprofit organizations and charity in their lives and our community;

• Our Touch A Life Luncheon featuring guest speaker Lee Woodruff inspired attendees to get

involved and make a difference in the lives of others;

• Guests at our Annual Meeting learned from the President of the Connecticut Council for

Philanthropy about the importance of philanthropy in a democratic society;

• Several nonprofit organizations established funds at the Community Foundation to manage their

operating reserves so they can focus on their mission.

Our ability to support the community is made possible by our generous donors. We received gifts from more

contributors than ever before, up 15% from 2013. We received $1,021,000 in contributions from all sources,

including our Fall outreach fundraising efforts.

The Community Foundation is the

most effective and efficient way to

turn your compassion into action.

New Canaan Community Foundation is your local charitable partner and offers a range of

philanthropic and educational services to all residents. We collaborate with donors to help

each individual achieve their personal giving goals. Volunteer leaders guide our work and

help us maximize our impact. Building on New Canaan’s generosity of spirit, we make careful

investments in area nonprofit organizations and award scholarships to college students.

All gifts to the Community Foundation, of any amount, have a direct and immediate

impact on our community.

OUR 2015 GOALS

• Engage talented NCHS interns to researchand produce a fun, informative videoabout the Foundation

• Provide educational service to our community by coordinating expert speakers to address key topics of interest,such as Youth Financial Literacy and Best Practices in Board Governance

• Share the terrific I ♥NC photos in a public show and launch second annual contest

• Continue to reach out to more community groups for speaking and educational opportunities

• Increase collaborative work with localnonprofits and promote agency funds to allow organizations to focus on theirmission

• Encourage more local volunteers to participate in grantmaking efforts

• Gauge the level of community interest in establishing a Giving Circle programfor affinity groups

Promote Dialogue through Community Conversations:

• Increased community outreach and education efforts allow us to tellour story of community charity and demonstrate our commitment toNew Canaan’s generosity of spirit

• Our Executive Directors’ Professional Development Group, made upof New Canaan nonprofit leaders, meets to discuss best practices andkey issues that affect their organizations

• Winners from our inaugural “I ♥New Canaan Photo Contest”selected nonprofits to receive a grant in their honor, showing theirappreciation for their work

• 36 high school students participated in our Young Philanthropistsprogram, learning about nonprofits and evaluating grant proposals toaward $18,500 in support for programs benefiting the elderly

• The Young Philanthropist students sponsored two fundraising eventsat local business partners Oxygen Fitness and Elm restaurant to increase awareness of their efforts and raise money

• Our new initiative, Best Kept Secret gatherings, gave us an opportunity to explain the Community Foundation’s work in a casual setting in residents’ homes

• Staff visited a range of local groups to speak about the importance of charity, including New Canaan Clergy Association, Kids Care at West School, Girl Scouts at South School, United Methodist Preschool, St. Mark’s Preschool, Rotary Club, and PEO

Local Donors Support Our Work:

• More donors than ever contributed to our fundraising efforts, with 830 people giving to the Community Foundation, a 15% increase over 2013

• Gifts to our outreach campaign reached a record-breaking $550,000

• Our endowment covers all administrative expenses, allowing us to distribute every dollar of donors’ unrestricted gifts as grants

• Our sold-out Touch A Life Luncheon featuring guest speaker Lee Woodruff raised morethan $60,000 to help needy neighbors through our distinctive Touch A Life program

• Individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations met their charitable goals by establishing new funds at the Foundation

We Are the Essential Local Funder:

• Thousands of lives were changed by our targeted grants awarded to local nonprofitsand essential scholarships given to students

• Volunteers in our main cycle of grant-making reviewed requests for $1 million andhelped us award grants of $595,000 to 60 organizations

• More than $198,000 in awards helped 66 local students continue their educationthrough our scholarship program

• Our survey of grant recipients yielded important findings about our role as a key supporter of critical area organizations

• Special grants touched the lives of hundreds of needy New Canaan residents by payingfor essential expenses such as rent, utilities, medical bills, and child care

• Our emergency grant to replace the oil tank at Santa’s workshop at the Merrie BeeCabin helped save the local Christmas traditions
