A formal letter stating that your child was not in appropriate school uniform will be sent home. It must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the school. 2. After 3 formal letters are sent home, parents will be contacted by the principal to arrange a meeting to explain why the student continues not to comply with the dress code. It should be noted that if any formal letters are not returned to the school signed by the parents the staff will immediately move to step 2 in the process. District Swimming Sports Best of luck to the students who are going to compete at the District Swimming Sports tomorrow. Thanks again to Julie Granger for running the training sessions at the Pines Pool. I’m sure the practice will pay off. Go Bonbeach ‘Blasters’ swim team!! Uniforms As of 2016, School Council endorsed an updated dress code. There were a number of questions regarding this at some Information Evenings. The Dress Code is displayed at the Uniform Shop and can be accessed here http://bonbeachps.vic.edu.au/uploaded_files/media/1487824528dress_code.pdf The teachers will be instructed to follow the below as per the code: If students are not dressed in full school uniform, the following process will be followed: 1. It should be noted that if any formal letters are not returned to the school signed by the parents the staff will immediately move to step 2 in the process. If you believe you have a valid reason why your child cannot wear the correct uniform, please contact myself or Mr Walsh to discuss the matter. Help kids change their perspective when things go wrong Parents can help catastrophisers learn to change their perspective when things go wrong. It’s natural when things go wrong to think that life will never be the same again. I recall as a teenager doing poorer than expected in my end of school exams, and missing the tertiary course I had set for myself. At the time it was such a catastrophe. I thought that there was no point taking another course – naturally, I would hate it. Of course, I undertook a teaching course, which I really enjoyed and I didn’t look back. Breaking up with a friend, losing close sports events and being on the receiving end of teasing can at the time seem like events from which we will never recover.

Catastrophising (jumping immediately to the worst possible scenario) only exaggerates kids’ worries and makes them feel even more anxious. It always helps to keep your sense of proportion, but it’s not easy when emotions run high. We all exaggerate our problems from time to time, particularly, when we are under stress. It takes a cool customer to moderate their thinking the whole time, but some kids are prone to jumping to the worst-case scenario, even when the events are quite minor. If your child is a serial catastrophiser , always seeing the worst case in a negative situation, try to change their thinking so they learn to keep things in perspective. Ask them the following questions to challenge your child’s catastrophic thinking: ‘What’s the most likely scenario?’ Sometimes it’s useful to introduce a dose of old-fashioned rational thinking for those kids who always assume the worst will happen to them. ‘Yep, you could break your leg if you go skiing. But the odds are that you won’t.’ ‘ You may be right, but does it really matter?’ One way to help hard-core catastrophisers is to admit that they could be right, but then ask them to imagine that the worst possible scenario actually happens. Then challenge them to understand that even the worst possible scenario is not so bad after all. This is the type of reality check many kids need. ‘Where does this fit on the disaster meter?’ Catastrophisers tie themselves in a knot about relatively insignificant things. Okay, making a fool out of themselves when they give a talk at school may not be insignificant to kids, but there are plenty of worse things that could happen. Help them get some perspective by giving their worry a score out of ten on how important the issue really is. ‘Is that helpful thinking’ Sometimes kids’ thinking is so out of whack with reality that they become anxious about minor things. Thinking things such as, ‘Everyone must like me,’ ‘I must never make a mistake’ and ‘Bad things always happen to me’ are extreme and need to be replaced by more moderate, realistic thoughts, such as, ‘It would be nice if everyone liked me but not everyone will. It’s important to have some good friends.’ When children experience hardships it is helpful if parents and teachers can assist them to process what happened to them. Children are faulty observers and often have difficulty seeing the full picture particularly when they are so close to the situation. Help your child see the full picture and in doing so they may realise that things may not be as bad as they seem. Ken Jones Principal

Information nights Thank you to all the parents and guardians who could make it to this week’s Information sessions. We realise that it is not always possible for everyone to attend at the times that are offered, and sometimes obstacles are placed in our way eg trains and traffic! For those that attended, we will be sending a short survey home to the email address that is registered at the Office (as well as the notes provided at each session). Please only complete the survey if you attended the session. I would also like to thank the teachers for their preparation, and giving up their evenings to present to you what we believe is pertinent information pertaining to the year.

Tiqbiz Tiqbiz is a communication app (available on the App Store and Google Play) that we use to send notifications and reminders to you. One of the great functions of this app is that you can click on the calendar icon, and it takes you to the school calendar. You can then add these events directly to your device – no manual entering! You can also click on the notification and add to your calendar. If you are new to the app, download it and follow the prompts. If you have been using the app for a while, don’t forget to change your settings to match you child / children’s 2017 grades.

You Can Do It Parent Session Don’t forget to register you attendance here https://goo.gl/Yzuw82 for the You Can Do It Parent session on Thursday, 23rd March. The session will start at 6:30 and finish at approximately 8pm. We have approximately 45 parents register their attendance so far!

District Swimming Carnival Good luck to the students who are swimming at the District Carnival on Friday. Go Bonbeach!

A community thank you to the Thorn Family and Farr Family for donating Drum Kits to our Music Program. Also a thank you to Michael for coming in and setting one up! The Prep/1 students who were lucky enough to hear and see you play were very enthusiastic. If you have an interest in Percussion/Drum Kit lessons, please forward an expression of interest to Miss Thomas.

Music News Music this week in the Grade 3/4 is continuing the focus on Rhythm and Beat. Students have been creating, revisiting the 80's and sharing hand clapping patterns in pairs or small groups. Have you been asked if you knew any hand clapping games 'back-in-the-day'? Do you remember any? Many students have been able to reproduce songs that support the rhythm and beat. Grade 3/4 are also learing the 'Cup Song', made famous by Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect #1. For those who would like to practice the pattern is; Clap, Clap 1, 2, 3, Clap, Cup Over Clap, up, Palm, Table Swap, Hand, Down Grade 5/6 have begun writing their class parodies, based on a song voted for by the grade. It has been a moving experience hearing how students have deciphered a song and how they want to create a parody that demonstrates many of the school ethos. Respect, sharing, caring. Grade 2 have discussed the 'Musical Alphabet' and the 7 notes which go in ascending or descending order. After putting a collection of bells in order, they were able to play lovely pieces. Hopefully they will have a repetoire soon and can perform as a year level at Education Week. Our Prep/1 students love to dance! They are also experiementing with different sounds percussion instruments make and how they can be played together.
