MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR: On behalf of the International Scientific Conference (ISC) organizing committee, I welcome you all of you to the 2nd International Scientific Conference 2013. This event has been organized by Kenyatta National Hospital and College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi.

The host institutions are leading providers of healthcare services, training and health research. You recall that in June 2011 we held our first inaugural scientific conference whose theme was “Towards optimum healthcare”. The focus for this second international scientific conference is “Research and Training for Quality Healthcare”. Research embodies the discovery and/or the development of new knowledge or products, acquisition of new tools /skills. This conference will provide a unique opportunity to both national and international community of health care providers to interact and examine all aspects that relate to the theme of the conference. It will also allow participants to capture and take stock of a broad spectrum of issues in Health research, practice, product discovery, innovation and development. These issues will further be interrogated by the participants, observations made and relevant recommendations drawn to guide future health research, practice and policy.

It has been a privilege working with a dedicated team of scientists and administrators in organizing this event. This conference has received significant support from the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National hospital administration and particularly Prof. Isaac Kibwage and Mr. Richard Lesiyampe who have provided financial and logistical support.

Let me also take this opportunity to thank Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, Cabinet secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for accepting to grace us with his presence as the guest of honour during the opening ceremony. My sincere thanks also go to the cabinet secretaries, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Devolution and Planning respectively for their support in the delivery of the plenary lectures in day two and three of the conference.

2nd Bi-ennual International Scientific Conference 2013, Nairobi Kenya viv 2nd Bi-ennual International Scientific Conference 2013, Nairobi Kenya

A critical look at the plenary lecture topics will confirm that these are topics of national interest at this stage of political history in Kenya. This rich mix of professional knowledge and experience clearly makes this conference unique and a “must attend”. Once again welcome all to the FORUM.
