During the dark, early morning hours of 1 September 1950, the enemy, under cover of art iller y , mortar, and direct tank fire, l a unched a strong attack against a platoon of Company Co The s quad of which Pri~ate Smith was assistant squad Iead er h a d several casualties in the initial action, and co mmuni-cation with the remainder of the platoon was severed by enemy fire~ Voluntarily, and with co mplete disregard for his o wn personal safety, P~ivato Smith left his position, dashed across th e exposed terrain s wept by intense enemy fire, contacted his Platoon Leader to pro-cure 2id for his wounded comr a des. Tho result was highly effective and tho enemy was forced to withdraw to the covcir of a small village. ~hen tho security fprc~ was ordered to retire, Captain Mcintyre continued to expose himself to tho heavy enemy fire, by moving among his men, personally directing and encouraging them. Twice ~u~ing the withdraual ho returned to tho evacuated position to search for uoundod~ He carried one wounded through tho enemy fire to safety and bandaged another badly wounded while under direct sniper fire~ His selfless concern for tho uoll being of his men and his ~ourageous indofferonce to enemy fire ·n oro nn inspirn ti on to a 11 o bsorving his v-alorous conduct o 'rho gallant action -displayed by Captain Mcintyre on this occasion re­flects groat credit upon himself and ie in keeping with tho ·highest traditions of tho military- soivice. During tho shelling, one of Sergeant Doopnor's comrades uas seriously u oundod, and v as lying in an exposed position uhero he uas in ~rave danger of further in­jury from tho enemy artillery. With complete disregard for his oun personal safety, and in tho face of this intense fire, Sergeant Doopncr immediately ran for u ard to tho uounded man.
