The First Viruses

Computer viruses started in the late 1980s. The first viruses were on floppy disks. These disks stored the computer's information. People put i!_?. code onto a floppy disk. The i_r:_s_ would take over the computer. It would spread when people shared floppy disks.

The first computer viruses were spread through floppy disks.

These viruses did a lot of damage. They destroyed the computer. Some of them sent pop-up messages that never stopped. Others deleted information from the computer.

Keeping up with the Times

Computer viruses have changed a lot since then. Now, people can make viruses that are hidden in emails or downloads. They infect the computer when a user opens an email or clicks on a link.

Stock Market Crash of 1929

Gravity

Freckle Level: 2C

'What goes up, must come down." This saying explains gravity.

Gravity is a force that pulls all objects toward each other. Think of a basketball falling from the net. That is 8.C?i_(X in action!

Gravity and Isaac Newton

In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree. An apple fell and hit him in the head. He guessed that there was a force pulling objects to the earth. That force was g_?i_(X.

A drawing of Isaac Newton under the tree

Newton discovered that 8.C?i_(X pulls objects together. It does not matter how heavy or light they are. Gravity is felt even from far away. It keeps our feet on the ground. It keeps the planets moving around the sun.

Gravity on the moon

You can only notice B.C?i_(X with huge objects like planets. The greater the mass of an object, the stronger its g_c?i_(X. The moon is much smaller than Earth, so its 8.C?tx is not as strong. This means that objects weigh less on the moon. They can take huge leaps because there is less 8.C?i_(X pulling them down!

In 1589, Galileo discovered that gi_txs pull is the same for all

objects. On Earth, air pushes against falling objects. If an object catches a lot of air, like a feather, it will fall slowly. On the moon there is no air. A feather and a bowling ball will fall at the same speed!

Thank You Gravity

Every planet has its own field of g-i_t_x. This field pulls objects toward its center. The further you get from Earth, the weaker its pull. After I went to ballet with my family, I knew I wanted to be a professional dancer. My mom and dad let me take ballet classes. I started with two classes each week. Soon, r.was taking classes every day.

I started classes classed Ccllfed ballet "en pointe." This class uses special shoes called pointe sho·es. With poir')te shoes, a dancer can stand all the way on her toes. lt'.s not easy. Sometimes my feet would get very sore.

I joined a special program for young dancers when I was 15. It was for students who wanted to dance as a career. I learned so much!

I got my first job with a professional dance company when I was 18. It was a small role, but I did get to be in some shows. Sixmonths later, I earned a larger role in the company.

The Nobel Foundation is based in Sweden. The prizes are decided by committees. Each committee is made of experts and scholars. Different universities in Sweden host these committees. Even being one of the committee members is an honor.

Each December. an awards ceremony is held in Oslo, Norway for the Nobel Peace Prize and in Stockholm, Sweden for all other prizes. Each of the laureates usually gives a speech the week before the ceremony. Then. at the ceremony on the 10th of December. laureates are awarded a medal, a diploma and money.

All of the medals are coated in gold with a picture of Alfred Nobel on the front. A diploma is a paper that says the reason the prize was awarded. The money is usually worth about one million dollars. The money is not the most important part. The real prize is the honor of winning the award.

Two weeks later, Snodgrass looked at the dam.

'Without that dam, the bears would eat us!" said Topo the turtle.

'We would wash away!" said Oona the opossum.

'Wow," said Snodgrass.

Snodgrass went into his shell to look at his law books. He found one law that might fix the problem. He came out of his shell. "It is lime for a vote," he told the animals.

The Great Depression

Freckle Level: 2B

The Great Depression (1929-1939) was a tough period in U.S. history. Millions lost their jobs and money. Families couldn't afford food. The U.S. would have to step in to help the country recover.

Stock Market Crash of 1929

During the 1920s, Americans spent more money than they had. The banks weren't acting much better. They invested money in irresponsible ways.

By 1929, people stopped spending. Businesses died. People lost trust in companies. They panicked by pulling their money out of the stock market.

The Effects of the Crash

Americans were worried they would need cash. Millions took their money out of banks, forcing banks to close.

A crowd at waits to pull out their money

Americans began to spend less money. Businesses didn't have enough to pay their workers. By 1931, six million Americans were jobless. Many had to give up their homes and live on the streets.

The Worst Days

By 1933, 12,000 people lost their jobs each day. One of every four adults did not have a job. The U.S. didn't have money to pay workers.

The American people voted for a new president named Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR).

The New Deal

FDR passed 15 laws in his first 100 days. He helped reopen banks and restore trust. The FDIC was formed to protect money in banks.

In 1935, FDR passed more laws creating jobs. The TV A brought electricity and jobs to parts of the south. The WPA created 8.5 million jobs for public projects.

The U.S. has gone through many ups and downs. Nothing has been as hard as the Great Depression. The changes made back then saved the country and gave us hope.

Gravity

Freckle Level: 2C

'What goes up, must come down." This saying explains gravity.

Gravity is a force that pulls all objects toward each other. Think of a basketball falling from the net. That is g?i_t)'. in action!

Gravity and Isaac Newton

In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree. An apple fell and hit him in the head. He guessed that there was a force pulling objects to the earth. That force was 8.?i_t)'..

A drawing of Isaac Ne'Nton under the tree

Newton discovered that g?i_t)'. pulls objects together. It does not matter how heavy or light they are. Gravity is felt even from far away. It keeps our feet on the ground. It keeps the planets moving around the sun.

Gravity on the moon

You can only notice g?i!)'. with huge objects like planets. The greater the mass of an object, the stronger its 8.?i_t)'.. The moon is much smaller than Earth, so its 8.?i_t)'. is not as strong. This means that objects weigh less on the moon. They can take huge leaps because there is less g?i_t)'. pulling them down!

Rl.3: Analyzing Connections

Why do we not float off into space?

Air resistance keeps us on the ground.

Gravity keeps us on the ground.

Our weight keeps us on the ground.

Our mass keeps us on the ground.

Rl.3: Analyzing Connections

Where is gravity stronger: on Earth or on the moon?

Your weight changes on the moon since the moon's gravity is not

as strong.

In 1589, Galileo discovered that g,?:'.iY.s pull is the same for all

objects. On Earth, air pushes against falling objects. If an object catches a lot of air, like a feather, it will fall slowly. On the moon there is no air. A feather and a bowling ball will fall at the same speed!

Thank You Gravity

Every planet has its own field of $.?:'.i_tx· This field pulls objects toward its center. The further you get from Earth, the weaker its pull. That is why'.'}-- float in space. §!.:'J.!)'. is much simpler when we just think about Earth. Gravity keeps our feet on the ground. Anything we throw up in the air will come back down!
