2nd EU-Asia Industry Collaboration Seminar 5 November 2013 Munich, Germany

Summary

The 2nd EU-Asia Industry Collaboration Seminar held on the 5th of November 2013 in Munich has marked the culmination of the industrial cooperation activities undertaken by the GNSS.asia project. In addition it has had a tremendous impact on raising awareness on the service offering provided by the GNSS.asia platform and establishing a solid basis for the engagement of several European companies in future activities of the project. The event was organised by the GNSS.asia consortium - as a side meeting of the European Space Solutions Conference which ranks high amongst the most important European events on Space applications - with the following objectives:

Bring together key industrial and institutional players from EU and Asia to gather insights on the current opportunities for GNSS downstream cooperation.

Present up-to-date market information per application domain for each of the Asian economies.

Present the services of the GNSS.asia platform and the results it has yielded so far. Offer the opportunity for direct B2B matchmaking.

The event was attended by more than 60 participants including 13 representatives of Asian companies and organisations who travelled to Europe as part of the GNSS.asia delegation. The agenda included presentations by the GNSS.asia team, elevator pitches by Asian delegates and a panel session focusing on the experience of European GNSS companies in EU-Asia cooperation. The participants have had the chance to gain valuable insights on the current opportunities for industrial GNSS cooperation in India, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. In addition they were informed about the ongoing pilot activities of GNSS.asia and about the various aspects of the support that GNSS.asia can provide to facilitate EU-Asia cooperation. Furthermore the event offered a unique opportunity for direct matchmaking and networking between the participants from Europe and Asia. Several companies have expressed their interest in attending the upcoming Asian Seminars in 2014. The full agenda of the event is attached in Annex I.

Presentations

EGNSS and R&D programme update in the context of EU-Asia industrial cooperation

The event was opened by Ms Justyna Redelkiewicz of GSA who presented the current status of the E-GNSS programmes and the specific importance of the Asia-Pacific region with regards to GNSS devices’ shipments. Ms Redelkiewicz presented some elements on the international cooperation activities of the E-GNSS programmes and the upcoming Horizon 2020 opportunities.

EU-Asia industrial cooperation

Dr Daniel Ludwig has provided an overview of the objectives of the GNSS.asia project whilst further elaborating on the importance of Asia-Pacific as the GNSS hotspot. Dr Ludwig presented the experience gained within GNSS.asia that decisively confirms the key role of Asia with regards to the global uptake of E-GNSS. This part was followed by a presentation of Mr Eleftherios Mamais focusing on the achievements of the GNSS.asia project. Mr Mamais highlighted the key accomplishments of the project with regards to

­ mapping the GNSS industry in each Asian economy; ­ identifying the most interesting application domains; ­ organising several events in Asia, enabling the active participation of local

stakeholders in the project; ­ engaging European companies and ­ defining a sustainable E-GNSS strategy for industrial cooperation with Asia

Mr Mamais concluded his presentation by outlining some highlights of the project including the kick-off of pilot activities in Asia and the recent induction of GNSS.asia in the Multi-GNSS Asia demonstration campaign.

GNSS opportunities in India

Dr Suresh Kibe, the GNSS expert of the Indian team, has presented the current GNSS opportunities in India with particular focus on aviation/SBAS, road transport, railways and surveying. Dr Kibe has offered valuable insights on the best way to establish business in India and has invited the European participants to connect with the local team and make use of the services they can provide.

GNSS opportunities in China

Ms Lanna Wu, team leader of GNSS.asia in China, has in turn presented the GNSS landscape in China. Ms Wu has given up-to-date information on the initiatives that drive the development of the downstream sector in China, e.g. the establishment of five congregation zones to boost China’s GNSS economy. Ms Wu has also provided valuable insights on the Chinese capabilities with regards to development of GNSS chipsets and receivers.

GNSS opportunities in Taiwan

Ms Angela Hsiao, team leader of GNSS.asia in Taiwan, has provided elaborate information on the current state of GNSS in Taiwan, based on extensive market monitoring by the GNSS.asia team. Ms Hsiao focused on the strengths of Taiwan as a global leader in semiconductors and chipset-manufacturing. Further on she thoroughly outlined the most promising sectors for EU-Taiwan industrial GNSS cooperation.

GNSS opportunities in Korea

The overview of the current GNSS opportunities in the Republic of Korea was presented by Mr Tomasz Wierzbowski, team leader of GNSS.asia in Korea. Mr Wierzbowski underlined the main strengths and weaknesses of Korea highlighting the recent announcement of the plans for the deployment of a Korean SBAS. Specific mention was given to the key actors of the GNSS industry and their willingness to cooperate with Europe.

GNSS opportunities in Japan

Mr Silviu Jora, general manager of the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, has presented the current GNSS opportunities in Japan. Mr Jora explained that despite Japan being a “crowded” island there is a lot of potential in several niche sectors for cooperation with Europe. Mr Jora has further given recommendations on how to establish business relationships in Japan.

GNSS.asia Pilot Activities

After the networking coffee break, the team leaders of Taiwan and India have presented the GNSS.asia pilot activities in their respective economies. More specifically Ms Hsiao has explained the concept and implementation plan for the GNSS Info Centre in Taiwan as well as the expected impact of its services. Following this presentation Mr Senthil Kumar, project manager of GNSS.asia in India, has offered details on the opportunities of GNSS in rail in India. Mr Kumar noted the importance of the recent governmental decision to allow foreign direct investment in the railways sector which together with the vast modernisation plans are offering and excellent opportunity for industrial GNSS cooperation. Mr Kumar has invited the participants to the Indian Seminar in Delhi on the 22nd of January, where dedicated sessions on railways will be held.

Elevator pitches by Asian participants

This session included elevator pitches by Asian participants presenting their GNSS-related activities, their current products/services and their concrete request/offer for industrial cooperation with Europe. The presentations confirmed the diversity and maturity of the initiatives developed in each country and confirmed the catalytic role that GNSS.asia can play. Presentations were made by

Panel Session: Experience of EU companies in EU-Asia industrial cooperation

The last session of the 2nd EU-Asia Industry Collaboration Seminar focused on the experience of European companies in industrial cooperation activities in Asia. Six representatives of European companies that have been collaborating with Asia have described the challenges they have faced, the lessons they have learned and have given feedback to the project on how to better support them. The panel was headed and moderated by Mr Peter Grognard, CEO of Septentrio and Vice-Chairman of Galileo Services. The other members of the panel were

Figure 9: Panel discussion with representatives of European GNSS companies The representatives of the European companies have given key insights on their experience in establishing business in Asia or cooperating with Asian companies. They have expressed their appreciation for the services provided by GNSS.asia and their willingness to be actively engaged in the coming activities. This discussion has provided very useful feedback for the GNSS.asia team to improve the services offered by the platform and direct its support to the specific needs expressed by the companies. It is noteworthy that the testimonies from the European companies have confirmed the usefulness of the support given by GNSS.asia whether for large companies such as Thales (“even though we have offices around in those countries we count a lot on the local GNSS.asia teams for matchmaking”) to SMEs such as Iguassu (“we have greatly benefitted by our trips to Asia for the GNSS.asia workshops and the support of the project”).

Closing Remarks

The closing remarks and wrap-up of the Seminar was made by Mr Rainer Horn, project coordinator of GNSS.asia. Mr Horn has summarised the main points presented by the team leaders of GNSS.asia in the Asian economies and the contributions by the Asian companies that travelled to Europe for this event. Finally Mr Horn analysed the remarks of the European companies and underlined the commitment of GNSS.asia in improving its service offering.
