2nd Annual Walter Prescott Webb Teacher Workshop Flight Culture and the Human Experience Saturday, 18 April 2020 @ American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum Dr. Scott W. Palmer (Professor and Chair of History at UT Arlington) draws upon two decades of experience researching, wri>ng, and teaching avia>on history to help junior- and high-school teachers incorporate both the history of technology and the history of flight culture into their own instruc>onal repertoires. Directly aligned with TEKS standards, Dr. Palmer’s two presenta>ons provide essen>al informa>on, concepts, and key terms along with access to mul>media materials and lesson plans that may be easily adapted for use in any 7 th -12 th grade social studies classroom. SCHEDULE 9:30 am - Check in; light breakfast included 10:30 am- “The ‘Look and Feel’ of the Modern: The DC-3 and the Rise of 20th-Century America” The Douglas DC-3 was a marvel of twen>eth-century American technology and industry. Combining cuPng edge design and a raQ of innova>ve features, the airplane revolu>onized flight and gave rise to the passenger airline industry. But its success was by no means a foregone conclusion. In this first presenta>on, par>cipants will learn how a disparate combina>on of public and private ins>tu>ons, cuVhroat business compe>>on, visionary engineers, and blind luck contributed to the crea>on of arguably the most beau>ful aircraQ ever to grace the skies. The talk concludes with an evalua>on of the DC-3’s central role in defining how mid-century Americans came to understand and represent the “modern” through reference to the airplane’s influence on “streamlined” industrial design and minimalist architecture. 12:30 pm - LUNCH provided 1:30 pm - “Teaching Texas History through the History of Aviation” Remember the Alamo? Of course you do! But do you remember Katherine S>nson? Wiley Post? Or Frank Lorenzo? These pioneering avia>on figures are as much a part of Texas history as Santa Ana, Jim Bowie, and William Travis. In this second presenta>on Dr. Palmer introduces par>cipants to leading individuals, events, and ins>tu>ons that shaped the state of avia>on and the State of Texas from c. 1900 to the early twenty-first century. In addi>on to iden>fying key milestones and resources related to the history of (Texas) avia>on, this presenta>on will provide mul>ple examples of how these liVle covered, but fascina>ng, subjects can be embedded into the TEKS periodiza>on for teaching Texas History.
