ITCS components

ITCS can replace or augment existing wayside signaling to communicate train movement authority. In dark territory or new line construction, ITCS can operate as the sole method of operation, with no need for direct traffic control (DTC) or wayside signaling. This vital functionality can result in increased speeds, capacity and safety benefits as well as lower life-cycle cost.

ITCS consists of three main components — communication network, wayside component and onboard component.

Communication networkThe communication network used in ITCS can be adapted for any frequency or local radio supplier. The implementation in Michigan utilizes 220 Mhz radios and the installation in China uses a GSM-R cellular network. Caltrain will be using the PTC 220 Mhz radio. Typically, any radio network with at least 4,800 bps capacity can be used to talk to trains for the operational data. High bandwidth radio networks such as WiFi or 900 Mhz radios are often specified in the yard areas where data loading is increased.

Wayside componentThe wayside component of ITCS communicates the status of the railroad (switches, signals and track circuits) to the trains. As an overlay on existing signaling, it reports in conventionally. In territories with virtual signaling, ITCS determines all the aspects vitally then reports them. Status is monitored or controlled vitally using the Vital Harmon Logic Controller (VHLC), an interlocking controller from GE Transportation that has logged millions of hours of reliable, safe service.

Onboard componentThe onboard computer used in ITCS is UltraCab II, a vital platform, with millions of reliable, safe hours deployed worldwide. It performs speed control and location determination and displays applicable speed limits to the driver. It uses a vital location determination system, based either on balises or GPS, to locate the train and an onboard database to determine the relative location of all features of the railroad such as signals, switches and crossings. ITCS and existing cab signaling can use the same onboard platform, seamlessly transferring between territories.

ITCS uses existing signals or creates virtual signals to operate any territory just as though it is centralized traffic control (CTC).
