WEST GREEN HOUSEOPERA 2013West Green House Opera finds its home in West Green House’s “Green Theatre”, thecentrepiece of one of England’s most spectacular gardens, just fifty minutes fromLondon and a few minutes from both the M3 and M4.

West Green House performs true Country House Opera, a fiendishly difficult art formfor not only must it present good opera, but there must also be an equal balancebetween a garden, its ambience and the music to provide its incomparable attraction.

To meet this exacting challenge West Green House has a specially designed OperaPavilion sheltered between the green walls of the theatre lawn housing its stage, orchestra and tiered auditorium. It is linked by an apple arched pathway to theLakeside Pavilions where suppers can be taken on balmy evenings, but if the weatherforces us inside, suppers are in the flower filled greenhouse set in its own courtyard.

As each opera evening concludes West Green House becomes a unique experience asthe Lake Field, water gardens and follies are lit to create a “fete champetre”, aperformance in its own right creating an unsurpassed garden spectacle.

THE THREEPENNY OPERALondon Philharmonic Orchestra’s Foyle Future FirstsMusic: Kurt WeillLibretto: Bertolt BrechtOpera in three ActsSung in EnglishFriday 26th and Saturday 27th July 2013

The Threepenny Opera is a play withmusic on an operatic scale. It is a productof a 1920s Berlin between the Great Warsthat offered a socialist critique of acapitalist world, but it was also to be amusical masterpiece that brought togetherthe sounds of cabaret, American jazz anddance bands around the biting text ofBrecht and the acid harmonies of Weill.

Based on The Beggar’s Opera, a brilliantlysuccessful parody of Handel's operawritten by John Gay in 1728 [and a hugelysuccessful West Green House productionin both 2005 and 2010], this work has beenthe subsequent inspiration for the megamusicals "Cabaret" and "Chicago" withmany of its principal songs being some ofmusic's most popular and famous, including "Mack the Knife", a jazz standard immortalized by Louis Armstrong.

For West Green House the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s young professionaldevelopment programme Foyle Future Firsts will accompany the performers enablingus to once again support the best of our younger professional talent.

This orchestra will be under the baton of Ilyich Rivas, who will also conduct Mozart’sThe Marriage of Figaro with Glyndebourne on Tour this autumn.

THE TALES OF HOFFMANNA West Green House - Opera Project ProductionJacques OffenbachLibretto by Jules Barbier, based on short stories by E.T.A.HoffmannOpera in three actsSung in EnglishSaturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August 2013

The Tales of Hoffmann,Offenbach’s greatest and finalwork, represents the pinnacle ofhis artistic achievement. Based onthe short stories by E.T.A.Hoffmann, a drunken poet recalls, over three acts, the great loves ofhis life. These span from thebeautiful exquisite Olympia, whoturns out to be nothing but amechanical doll; to theconsumptive Antonia, forbiddento sing for fear of her fragilehealth, through to the greatVenetian courtesan Guilietta whoultimately abandons the pennilesspoet.

Through these adventures thepoet is guided with unfailingloyalty by his friend Nicklaussewho, at the final moment, reveals

herself as his “muse”, faithful to the last whilst Hoffmann slumbers alone surroundedby the ghosts of his past.

Not since the composer’s earlier operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, with itseponymous “can-can”, had Offenbach written a piece containing such a vast array ofmelodic inspiration, from the spectacular coloratura of Olympia’s “Doll” aria, to thegreat trio of Hoffmann, Antonia and Dr. Miracle, to the justly famous “Barcarolle”which so brilliantly conjures up the mystery and magic of the great Venetian city.

Enjoy the beauty of West Green HouseGardens

West Green House Garden could be theinspiration for a Jane Austen novel. Itintriguingly combines gardens that aretraditional, a neo-classical landscape withflamboyant contemporary design. Its hallmarkis its lavish planting and use of vibrant colourcombinations.

A grand water staircase provides the focalpoint to the Nymphaeum fountain. Themagnificent Walled Garden is entered throughan arbour of wisteria where an allee of appletrees divides its elaborate potager planted withberry filled fruit cages, annual flowers andcolourful vegetables, from its signatureperennial borders known for their exuberantplanting.

Beyond the walls there is a dramatic Persianstyle Water Garden, a Dragon Garden plantedwith spring flowering black red peonies, a LakeField carpeted in the spring with fritillaries, daffodils and bluebells and which embracesone of England’s most eclectic collections ofgarden follies many by Quinlan Terry.

A path leads from the serenity of the lake to thecontemporary Garden of the Five Bridge withits serpentine ribbon of Iris sibirica “Papillion”crossed by chinoiserie inspired bridges. Itmeanders on through a woodland glade to theterraced Theatre Lawn surrounded by talltapestry hedges .

“The sumptuous dark colours evoke a richpast, the ruby brocades on a wing chair, thedeep greens and blues of old tapestry”.
