FOREWORDIt is decision time. As the message of Elijah touches our

hearts and consciences by the study of these lessons, there is acall to choose for or against the truth. As believers in thethreefold angels' message, some of us may have known manyaspects of the Elijah message. But how much of it have we put into practice? "How long halt ye between two opinions?" echoesthe voice of Elijah down to our time. We cannot be undecided. "Adoubleminded man is unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8).

As we study the lessons this quarter, God's call to us is verydirect and startling: "Cboose you this day whom ye will serve"(Joshua 24:15). By the grace of God let us:

CHOOSE to practice all the health reform principles consistently (Romans 12:1; CD 341-342).

CHOOSE to have daily personal contact with Christ throughprayer and study of His Word (Psalm 46:10; DA 363).

CHOOSE to be minutemen and help find the "7,000" whohave not bowed their knee to Baal (Luke 14:23; PK 171).

CHOOSE to take special interest in our personal preparationand in that of our families to meet our God (Amos 4:12; 2SM 116).

CHOOSE to be a genuine Reformer; one who practices whathe preaches, in every aspect of life (Isaiah 61:4; 4BC 1151).

CHOOSE to represent Christ in the family circle not only byprecept, but especially by example (Malachi 4:6; PP 140, 141).

CHOOSE to be sanctified by cheerfully performing dailyduties in perfect obedience to God (Matthew 25:23; COL 360).

CHOOSE to daily enter with Christ into the Most Holy placeby faith and personal experience (Hebrews 10:19, 20; 7BC 933,934).

CHOOSE to invest time, money and resources in the establishment of "schools of the prophets" (Isaiah 58:12; 6T 441).

If we, by God's grace, have a close, personal relationship withChrist, and live and practice the truths outlined in this quarterlyentitled Choose Ye This Day, we will be caught up as was Elijahwhen the small black cloud appears in the eastern sky (GC 640).

"When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproducedin His people then He will come to claim them as His own."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 69.

Lessons for Today

Seeing the tremendous increase in requests forSabbath Bible Lessons, we are awestruck by thesolemn import of these quarterlies as tools in the handof God today. Even in this hour of great spiritual crisis, when there are "gods many and lords many," when"every wind of doctrine" is blowing (5T 80), when"there is a spirit of opposition to the plain word of Godand to the testimony of His Spirit" (5T 79), faithfulAdventists can find comfort in the assurance that thereis "nothing to fear for the future, except as we shallforget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching inour past history" (LS 196).

"The Sabbath school should be a place where thejewels of truth are searched for and rescued from theirenvironment of error, and placed in their true settingin the framework of the gospel. Precious gems oftruth, long lost sight of, are now to be restored to thechildren of God." -Counsels on Sabbath School Work, p. 12.

The Sabbath Bible Lessons are based solely onthe Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, and are carefullydesigned to foster deep spiritual enrichment. As publishers and distributors of these lessons, we seek toprepare studies that will genuinely strengthen God'sfinal remnant. In order to better serve you and yourmissionary needs, please send us your comments, questions, suggestions, or any recommendations youmay have for improving the Sabbath Bible Lessons.Your response is most welcome!

Welcome it,cultivate a love for it, and it will prove a precious soother of the nerves. Airmust be in constant circulation to be kept pure. The influence of pure, freshair is to cause the blood to circulate healthfully through the system. Itrefreshes the body and tends to render it strong and healthy, while at thesame time its influence is decidedly felt upon the mind, imparting a degree ofcomposure and serenity. It excites the appetite, and renders the digestion offood more perfect, and induces sound and sweet sleep."- Testimonies, vol. 1,p.702.

ELIJAH'S DIET

3. What natural remedy did the exhausted, depressed servant of Goduse for his physical restoration? 1 Kings 19:5; Ecclesiastes 5:12.

"Some make themselves sick by overwork. For these, rest, freedomfrom care, and a spare diet, are essential to restoration of health. To thosewho are brain weary and nervous because of continual labor and close confinement, a visit to the country, where they can live a simple, carefree life, coming in close contact with the things of nature, will be most helpful.Roaming through the fields and the woods, picking the flowers, listening tothe songs of the birds, will do far more than any other agency toward theirrecovery."- The Ministry of Healing, pp. 236, 237.

D TuesdayMarch 29

5. How had the diet of Elijah progressively changed? 1 Kings 17:6,10-13; 19:6. What is the ideal diet for the people of God in theselast days?

"Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us byour Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner aspossible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, apower of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a morecomplex and stimulating diet."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 296.

6. What implications does Elijah's progressively more simple dietarypattern have for us? With what words did Solomon recommendmoderation and regularity in eating? Ecclesiastes 10:17.

"If ever there was a time when the diet should be of the most simplekind, it is now."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 352.

"As a people, with all our profession of health reform, we eat toomuch." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 135.

CHRIST REFORMS PHYSICAL HABITSo Wednesday

March 30

7. How did Christ begin the work of redemption for man? Why? Matthew 4:1-4.

"Christ knew that in order to successfully carry forward the plan ofsalvation He must commence the work of redeeming man just where theruin began. Adam fell by the indulgence of appetite. In order to impressupon man his obligations to obey the law of God, Christ began His work ofredemption by reforming the physical habits of man."- Testimonies, vol. 3,p.486.

"Only hy the inexpressible anguish which Christ endured, can we estimate the evil of unrestrained indulgence. His example declares that our onlyhope of eternal life is through bringing the appetites and passions into subjection to the will of God."-The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 122.

8. How did Christ teach the importance of economy and a simple diet?John 6:5-12.

"Christ could have spread for the people a rich repast, but foodprepared merely for the gratification of appetite would have conveyed nolesson for their good. Through this miracle Christ desired to teach a lessonof simplicity. If men today were simple in their habits, living in harmonywith nature's laws, as did Adam and Eve in the beginning, there would be anabundant supply for the needs of the human family. But selfishness and theindulgence of appetite have brought sin and misery, from excess on the onehand, and from want on the other."-The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 47.

"After the multitude had been fed, there was an abundance of food left.Jesus bade His disciples, 'Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothingbe lost.' John 6:12. These words meant much more than putting the food into baskets. The lesson was twofold. Nothing is to be wasted. We are to letslip no temporal advantage. We should neglect nothing that would serve tobenefit a human being. Let everything be gathered up that will relieve thenecessities of earth's hungry ones. With the same carefulness are we totreasure the bread from heaven to satisfy the needs of the soul. By everyword of God we are to live. Nothing that God has spoken is to be lost. Notone word that concerns our eternal salvation are we to neglect. Not one wordis to fall useless to the ground."-Ibid., p. 48.

HEALTH AND GODLINESSo Thursday

9. What relationship exists between physical and spiritual health?3 John 2; Isaiah 40:30,31.

"The relation that exists between the mind and the body is very intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the

mind affects the health to a far greater degree than many realize. Many ofthe diseases from which men suffer are the result of mental depression.Grief, anxiety, discontent, remorse, guilt, distrust, all tend to break downthe life forces and to invite decay and death."- The Ministry ofHealing, p. 241.

"The better you observe the laws of health, the more clearly can youdiscern temptations, and resist them, and the more clearly can you discernthe value of eternal things."-My Life Today, p. 141.

10. Who is the Author of all physical law? On what condition did Godpromise to protect His people from disease? Exodus 15:26.

"Every law governing the human machinery is to be considered just astruly divine in origin, in character, and in importance as the word of God.Every careless, inattentive action, any abuse put upon the Lord's wonderfulmechanism, by disregarding His specified laws in the human habitation, is aviolation of God's law."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 17.

"God has formed laws to govern every part of our constitutions, andthese laws which He has placed in our being are divine, and for every transgression there is affixed a penalty, which must sooner or later be realized."·-Ibid., p. 19.

The Right Armof the Elijah Message

"The world needs today what it needed nineteen hundred years ago- a revelation of Christ. A great work of reform is demanded, and itis only through the grace of Christ that the work of restoration, physical, mental, and spiritual, can be accomplished." - The Ministryof Healing, p. 143.

KEY TEXT: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptableunto God, which is your reasonable service" (Romans 12:1).

THE RIGHT ARM OF THE MESSAGEo Sunday

April 3

I(

1. How is the work of modern Elijah described? Malachi 4:5,6. Why ishealth reform part of the Elijah message? Luke 17:26, 27; Matthew17:11.

"Those who are to prepare the way for the second coming of Christ arerepresented by faithful Elijah, as John came in the spirit of Elijah to preparethe way for Christ's first advent. The great subject of reform is to be agitated, and the public mind is to be stirred. Temperance in all things is to beconnected with the message, to turn the people of God from their idolatry, their gluttony, and their extravagance in dress and other things."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 62.

"I was again shown that the health reform is one branch of the greatwork which is to fit a people for the coming of the Lord. It is as closely connected with the third angel's message as the hand is with the body."-lbid.,p. 161.

2. Why do we believe that health reform is part of our preparation forthe loud cry? Hosea 6:1-3. What is the great object of healthreform?

"I was shown that if God's people make no efforts on their part, butwait for the refreshing to come upon them and remove their wrongs and cor-

rect their errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness ofthe flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they will be found wanting. The refreshing or power of God comes only onthose who have prepared themselves for it by doing the work which Godbids them, namely, cleansing themselves from all filthiness of the flesh andspirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 619.

"The work of health reform is the Lord's means for lessening sufferingin our world and for purifying His church." -Ibid., vol. 9, pp. 112, 113.

"Let it ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienicreform is to secure the highest possible development of mind and soul andbody."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 23.

THE BLESSING OF HEALTH REFORMo Monday

April 4

3. What does the Lord promise to those who live the principles of thehealth message on a consistent basis? Deuteronomy 7: 15. What influence will a faithful example have upon those who hear the thirdangel's message?

4. When prayers for the sick are offered, what must precede the expected healing? James 5:16; Psalm 103:1-3.

"God has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us in theselast days, that by walking in the light we may escape many of the dangers towhich we shall be exposed."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 22.

"Much of the prejudice that prevents the truth of the third angel'smessage from reaching the hearts of the people, might be removed if moreattention were given to health reform. When people become interested inthis subject, the way is often prepared for the entrance of other truths. Ifthey see that we are intelligent with regard to health, they will be moreready to believe that we are sound in Bible doctrines."-Ibid., p. 76.

"[God] has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us, thatwe may see our sin in violating the laws which He has established in ourbeing. All our enjoyment or suffering may be traced to obedience or transgression of natural law. Our gracious heavenly Father sees the deplorablecondition of men who, some knowingly but many ignorantly, are living inviolation of the laws that He has established. And in love and pity to therace, He causes the light to shine upon health reform."- Testimonies, vol. 3,p. 161.

FACING THE FACTSo Tuesday

5. With the increased interest in healthful living among the scientificcommunity and the general public, what great responsibility restsupon God's people? Deuteronomy 28: 13.

"I feel sad when I see those who ought to be zealous for our health principles, not yet converted to the right way of living. I pray that the Lord may

AN URGENT CALL

impress their minds that they are meeting with great loss. If things were asthey should be in the households that make up our churches, we might dodouble work for the Lord."- Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 163, 164.

6. What is the result of neglecting the light on health reform? Deuteronomy 28:15, 22, 35, 60, 61.

"Seventh-day Adventists are handling momentous truths. More thanforty [now nearly one hundred and forty] years ago the Lord gave us speciallight on health reform, but how are we walking in that light? How many haverefused to live in harmony with the counsels of God! As a people, we shouldmake advancement proportionate to the light received. It is our duty to understand and respect the principles of health reform. On the subject of temperance we should be in advance of all other people; and yet there are amongus well-instructed members of the church, and even ministers of the gospel, who have little respect for the light that God has given upon this subject. They eat as they please and work as they please."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 158.

o WednesdayApril 6

7. What call in reference to health reform is directed to every churchmember? Romans 12:1.

"The Lord calls for volunteers to enter His army. Sickly men and womenneed to become health reformers."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 39.

"God calls upon every church member to dedicate his life unreservedlyto the Lord's service. He calls for decided reformation. All creation is groaning under the curse. God's people should place themselves where they willgrow in grace, being sanctified, body, soul, and spirit, by the truth. Whenthey break away from all health-destroying indulgences, they will have aclearer perception of what constitutes true godliness. A wonderful changewill be seen in the religious experience."- Ibid., p. 34.

8. Where does genuine health reform begin? Why? Proverbs 14:30(first part); Mark 7:21-23.

"Circumstances cannot work reforms. Christianity proposes a reformation in the heart. What Christ works within, will be worked out under thedictation of a converted intellect. The plan of beginning outside and trying towork inward has always failed, and always will fail. God's plan with you is tobegin at the very seat of all difficulties, the heart, and then from out of theheart will issue the principles of righteousness; the reformation will be outward as well as inward." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 35.

A TIME TO CHANGEo Thursday

April 7

9. What is one of our greatest needs where there has been a neglect tofollow the light on health reform progressively? James 4:8, 9.

"There is need of decided changes. It is time for us to humble ourproud, self-willed hearts, and seek the Lord while He may be found. As apeople we need to humble our hearts before God; for the scars of inconsistency are on our practice."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 40.

10. What evidence shows that Christ was a strict health reformeramong men? 1 Peter 1:19; 2:22.

"Jesus was an earnest, constant worker. Never lived there among menanother so weighted with responsibilities. Never another carried so heavy aburden of the world's sorrow and sin. Never another toiled with such selfconsuming zeal for the good of men. Yet His was a life of health. Physicallyas well as spiritually He was represented by the sacrificial lamb, 'withoutblemish and without spot.' 1 Peter 1:19. In body as in soul He was an example of what God designed all humanity to be through obedience to His laws."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 51.

a. How are mind, soul, and body to be developed to God's highestideal, as a result of following all the laws of health?

b. Why is consistency important when following the health reformprinciples? Do we have reason to believe that we have not been consistent health reformers?

c. Could it be that we have been concentrating too much on conforming outwardly, while neglecting to allow the grace of Christ to workan inward change in our hearts?

d. What specific changes do we need to make in our health reformpractices to follow more closely in the footprints of our self-denyingMaster?

GOD REVEALS HIMSELF

"What Doest Thou Here, Elijah?"

"Not a pause for a moment in His presence, but personal contactwith Christ, to sit down in companionship with Him-this is ourneed." - Education, p. 261.

KEY TEXT: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

D SundayApril 10

1. Why did God ask Elijah the reason for his being at mount Horeband what answer did the prophet give? 1 Kings 19:9, 10.

"Often those who suffer reproach or persecution for their faith aretempted to think themselves forsaken by God. In the eyes of men they are inthe minority. To all appearance their enemies triumph over them. But letthem not violate their conscience. He who has suffered in their behalf, andhas borne their sorrows and afflictions, has not forsaken them."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 172.

2. How did God reveal Himself to His discouraged servant? 1 Kings19:11, 12.

"Not in mighty manifestations of divine power, but by 'a still smallvoice,' did God choose to reveal Himself to His servant. He desired to teachElijah that it is not always the work that makes the greatest demonstrationthat is most successful in accomplishing His purpose. While Elijah waitedfor the revelation of the Lord, a tempest rolled, the lightnings flashed, and adevouring fire swept by; but God was not in all this. Then there came a still, small voice, and the prophet covered his head before the presence of theLord. His petulance was silenced, his spirit softened and subdued. He nowknew that a quiet trust, a firm reliance on God, would ever find for him apresent help in time of need."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 168, 169.

"It is not always the most learned presentation of God's truth that convicts and converts the soul. Not by eloquence or logic are men's heartsreached, but by the sweet influences of the Holy Spirit, which operate quietly yet surely in transforming and developing character. It is the still, smallvoice of the Spirit of God that has power to change the heart."-Prophets andKings, p. 169.

"There is need of personal labor for the souls of the lost. In Christlikesympathy we should come close to men individually, and seek to awakentheir interest in the great things of eternal life. Their hearts may be as hardas the beaten highway, and apparently it may be a useless effort to presentthe Saviour to them; but while logic may fail to move, and argument bepowerless to convince, the love of Christ, revealed in personal ministry, maysoften the stony heart, so that the seed of truth can take root."-Christ'sObject Lessons, p. 57.

4. How can we hear the still, small voice speaking to us? Psalms 37:3,7; 46:10.

"We must individually hear Him speaking to the heart. When everyother voice is hushed, and in quietness we wait before Him, the silence of thesoul makes more distinct the voice of God. He bids us, 'Be still, and knowthat I am God.' Psalm 46:10. Here alone can true rest be found. And this isthe effectual preparation for all who labor for God. Amid the hurryingthrong, and the strain of life's intense activities, the soul that is thusrefreshed will be surrounded with an atmosphere of light and peace. The lifewill breathe out fragrance, and will reveal a divine power that will reachmen's hearts."-The Desire of Ages, p. 363.

PERSONAL COMMUNIONo Tuesday

April 12

5. How can we receive the blessings that God has in store for us?Isaiah 55:3 (first part). How can we fail of receiving the blessings ofreal communion with God even in our devotions?

"Many, even in their seasons of devotion, fail of receiving the blessingof real communion with God. They are in too great haste. With hurried stepsthey press through the circle of Christ's loving presence, pausing perhaps amoment within the sacred precincts, but not waiting for counsel. They haveno time to remain with the divine Teacher. With their burdens they return totheir work.

"These workers can never attain the highest success until they learnthe secret of strength. They must give themselves time to think, to pray, towait upon God for a renewal of physical, mental, and spiritual power."Education, pp. 260, 261.

6. Wherein can we find spiritual strength, peace, and assurance?Isaiah 30:15; 32:17.

"We need a calm waiting upon God. The need of this is imperious. It isnot the noise and bustle we make in the world which proves our usefulness.See how silently God works! We do not hear the noise of His steps, and yetHe is walking about us, laboring for our good."- The SDA Bible Commentary[E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1144.

"The Lord wants human beings to take time to rest, time to think ofand appreciate heavenly things. Those who do not value the things of heavensufficiently to give time to them will at last lose all." -Ibid.

ELIJAH'S NEW ASSIGNMENTSD Wednesday

April 13

7. How did God instruct Elijah to continue the work of reformation?1 Kings 19:15-17.

"The Lord answered Elijah that the wrongdoers in Israel should not gounpunished. Men were to be especially chosen to fulfill the divine purpose inthe punishment of the idolatrous kingdom. There was stern work to be done, that all might be given opportunity to take their position on the side of thetrue God. Elijah himself was to return to Israel, and share with others theburden of bringing about a reformation."-Prophets and Kings, p. 169.

8. What fact did God impress upon Elijah to show him that his complaints, as expressed in 1 Kings 19:10, were not justified? 1 Kings19:18.

"Elijah had thought that he alone in Israel was a worshiper of the trueGod. But He who reads the hearts of all revealed to the prophet that therewere many others who, through the long years of apostasy, had remainedtrue to Him. 'I have left Me,' God said, 'seven thousand in Israel, all theknees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath notkissed him.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 170.

THE 7,000 TODAYD Thursday

April 14

9. What parallel exists between the days of Elijah and our time?Romans 11:5.

"[The] apostasy, widespread as it has come to be, is not universal. Notall in the world are lawless and sinful; not all have taken sides with theenemy. God has many thousands who have not bowed the knee to Baal, many who long to understand more fully in regard to Christ and the law, many who are hoping against hope that Jesus will come soon to end the reignof sin and death. And there are many who have been worshiping Baal ignorantly, but with whom the Spirit of God is still striving." -Prophets and Kings,p. 171.

"Let no man attempt to number Israel today, but let everyone have aheart of flesh, a heart of tender sympathy, a heart that, like the heart ofChrist, reaches out for the salvation of a lost world."-Ibid., p. 189.

10. What methods does Satan use to prevent us from seeking God'sfaithful ones in the world and the fallen churches? Luke 21:34;Mark 4:19.

"Much depends on the unceasing activity of those who are true andloyal, and for this reason Satan puts forth every possible effort to thwart thedivine purpose to be wrought out through the obedient. He causes some tolose sight of their high and holy mission, and to become satisfied with thepleasures of this life. He leads them to settle down at ease, or, for the sake ofgreater worldly advantages, to remove from places where they might be apower for good. Others he causes to flee in discouragement from duty, because of opposition or persecution. But all such are regarded by Heavenwith tenderest pity. To every child of God whose voice the enemy of soulshad succeeded in silencing, the question is addressed, 'What doest thouhere?' I commissioned you to go into all the world and preach the gospel, toprepare a people for the day of God. Why are you here? Who sent you?"-Prophets and Kings, pp. 171, 172.

Lesson 4 Sabbath, April 23, 1994

"Compel Them to Come In"

"If the servants of God will walk with Him in faith; He will givepower to their message. They will be enabled so to present His loveand the danger of rejecting the grace of God that men will be constrained to accept the gospel." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 236.

KEY TEXT: "The lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways andhedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may befilled" (Luke 14:23).

OUR DUTYD Sunday

April 17

1. What plan does the Lord have for the honest souls that are scattered in the world and the churches? Ezekiel 34:11-16; John10:16. What will be the result of doing our duty?

"As those who have an understanding of Bible truth try to seek out themen and women who are longing for light, angels of God will attend them. And where angels go, none need fear to move forward. As a result of thefaithful efforts of consecrated workers, many will be turned from idolatry tothe worship of the living God. Many will cease to pay homage to man-madeinstitutions and will take their stand fearlessly on the side of God and Hislaw."-Prophets and Kings, p. 171.

"We are not to wait for souls to come to us; we must seek them outwhere they are. When the word has been preached in the pulpit, the workhas but just begun. There are multitudes who will never be reached by thegospel unless it is carried to them."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 229.

2. How can individuals and families be personally involved in seekingout the honest ones? Luke 14:23. How will their efforts be rewarded?

"Brethren who wish to change their location, who have the glory of Godin view, and feel that individual responsibility rests upon them to do othersgood, to benefit and save souls for whom Christ withheld not His preciouslife, should move into towns and villages where there is but little or no lightand where they can be of real service and bless others with their labor andexperience.... The brethren should not flock together because it is moreagreeable to them, but should seek to fulfill their high calling to do othersgood, to be instrumental in the salvation of at least one soul. But more maybe saved than one."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 115.

LESSONS FROM THE PASTD Monday

April 18

3. What can we learn from Christ about reaching those in darkness?Hosea 11:8 (first part). How effective is His method?

"Although His love is driven back by the stubborn heart, [Christ]returns to plead with greater force, 'Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.'The wiiming power of His love compels souls to come in."-Christ's ObjectLessons, p. 235.

"Thousands can be reached in the most simple and humble way. Themost intellectual, those who are looked upon as the world's most gifted menand women, are often refreshed by the simple words of one who loves God,and who can speak of that love as naturally as the worldling speaks of thethings that interest him most deeply."-Ibid., p. 232.

4. What lesson should we learn from the tendency of the early Christians to colonize in Jerusalem? Acts 8: 1. What are two major problemsresulting from colonization into large churches and institutions?

"The policy of consolidation, wherever pursued, tends to the exaltationof the human in place of the divine. Those who bear responsibilities in thedifferent institutions look to the central authority for guidance and support. As the sense of personal responsibility is weakened, they lose the highestand most precious of all human experiences, the constant dependence of thesoul upon God. Not realizing their need, they fail of maintaining that constant watchfulness and prayer, that constant surrender to God, which alonecan enable men to hear and to obey the teaching of His Holy Spirit."Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 172.

TREES PLANTED TOO CLOSELYD Tuesday

April 19

5. How does Christ illustrate His plan for His church? Matthew 5: 1316. How does colonization hinder this plan?

"God designs that His people shall be the light of the world, the salt ofthe earth. The plan of gathering together in large numbers, to compose alarge church, has contracted their influence, and narrowed down theirsphere of usefulness, and is literally putting their light under a bushel. ...The plan of colonizing, or moving from different localities where there is butlittle strength or influence, and concentrating the influence of many in onelocality, is removing the light from places where God would have it shine."Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 633.

" 'True missionary workers will not colonize. God's people are to bepilgrims and strangers on the earth. The investment of large sums of moneyin the building up of the work in one place is not in the order of God. Plantsare to be made in many places. Schools and sanitariums are to be establishedin places where there is now nothing to represent the truth. These interests

are not to be established for the purpose of making money, but for the purpose of spreading the truth.' "-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 215.

6. How does colonization in one place affect our spiritual life? In whatsense are the righteous compared to the palm trees? Psalm92:12-15.

"Trees that are crowded closely together do not grow healthfully andsturdily. The gardener transplants them that they may have room to develop.A similar work would benefit many of the members of large churches. Theyneed to be placed where their energies will be called forth in active Christianeffort. They are losing their spiritual life, becoming dwarfed and inefficient, for want of self-sacrificing labor for others. Transplanted to some missionary field, they would grow strong and vigorous."-The Ministry of Healing,p. 152.

WISE NURSERYMEN NEEDEDD Wednesday

April 20

7. How can those in leading positions help to open new fields and prevent future colonization? Matthew 22:9; Isaiah 54:2.

"All the preaching in the world will not make men feel deeply the needof the perishing souls around them. Nothing will so arouse in men andwomen a self-sacrificing zeal as to send them forth into new fields to workfor those in darkness. Prepare workers to go out into the highways andhedges. Do not call men and women to the great center, encouraging them toleave churches that need their aid. Men must learn to bear responsibilities. Not one in a hundred among us is doing anything beyond engaging in common, worldly enterprises. Weare not half awake to the worth of the soulsfor whom Christ died.

"We need wise nurserymen, who will transplant trees to differentlocalities and give them advantages that will enable them to grow. It is thepositive duty of God's people to go into the regions beyond."- Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 147, 148.

8. What practical method can be used to move lay members to newlocations and thus establish new centers of worship? What exampledid Abraham leave for us? Hebrews 11:8-10.

"Oh, how I seem to hear the voice day and night, 'Go forward; add newterritory; enter new territory with the tent, and give the last message ofwarning to the world. There is no time to be lost. Leave My memorial inevery place where ye shall go. My Spirit will go before you, and the glory ofthe Lord shall be your rearward.' "-Evangelism, p. 61.

MOTIVATIOND Thursday

April 21

9. What should motivate lay members to sacrifice convenience andmove to new locations, carrying the message of salvation? Psalm126:5,6; Isaiah 55:11, 12.

"In view of what Christ has done for us, and what He has suffered forsinners, we should, out of pure, disinterested love for souls, imitate His example by sacrificing our own pleasure and convenience for their good. Thejoy set before Christ, which sustained Him in all His sufferings, was thesalvation of poor sinners. This should be our joy and the spur of our ambitionin the cause of our Master. In so doing we please God and manifest our loveand devotion to Him as His servants."- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 115, 116.

10. How did Christ exemplify in His life the importance of moving tonew locations? Matthew 4:23; Luke 13:22.

"The Majesty of heaven journeyed from place to place on foot, teachingout of doors by the seaside, and in the mountain. Thus He drew the people toHim. Are we greater than our Lord? Was His way the right way? Have webeen working unwisely in maintaining simplicity and godliness? We have notlearned our lesson yet as we should. Christ declares, Take My yoke ofrestraint and obedience upon you, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. ForMy yoke is easy, and My burden is light."-Evangelism, p. 58.

THOUGHT AND REVIEW QUESTIONSD Friday

April 22

a. Do we have a burden for the salvation of our work associates, friends and neighbors?

"The great burden of every soul should be, Is my heart renewed? Is mysoul transformed? Are my sins pardoned through faith in Christ? Have I beenborn again?" -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 117.

"Let church members bear in mind that the fact that their names areregistered on the church books will not save them. They must show themselves approved of God, workmen that need not be ashamed. Day by daythey are to build their characters in accordance with Christ's directions. 'IThey are to abide in Him, constantly exercising faith in Him. Thus they willgrow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ-wholesome, cheer-ful, grateful Christians, led by God into clearer and still clearer light. If thisis not their experience, they will be among those whose voices will one daybe raised in the bitter lamentation: 'The harvest is past, the summer is end-ed, and my soul is not saved!"- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 48.

"Go to your rest at night with every sin confessed. Thus we did when in1844 we expected to meet our Lord. And now this great event is nearer thanwhen we first believed."-Ibid.

4. What should God's people be doing now with their time? John 5:39;Luke 21:36; 10:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

"The law of God should be loved and honored by His true people nowmore than ever before. There is the most imperative necessity of urging theinjunction of Christ upon the minds and hearts of all believers, men andwomen, youth and children: 'Search the Scriptures.' Study your Bible as youhave never studied it before. Unless you arise to a higher, holier state in yourreligious life, you will not be ready for the appearing of our Lord. As greatlight has been given, God expects corresponding zeal, faithfulness, anddevotion on the part of His people. There must be more spirituality, a deeperconsecration to God, and a zeal in His work that has never yet been reached.Much time should be spent in prayer, that our garments of character may bewashed and made white in the blood of the Lamb."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 717.

PROMPTED BY ELIJAH'S ZEALo Tuesday

April 26

5. What can we learn from John the Baptist as we present the messageof Christ's return? Luke 1:17; Revelation 14:7.

"In this time of well-nigh universal apostasy, God calls upon His messengers to proclaim His law in the spirit and power of Elias. As John theBaptist, in preparing a people for Christ's first advent, called their attentionto the Ten Commandments, so we are to give, with no uncertain sound, themessage: 'Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment iscome.' With the earnestness that characterized Elijah the prophet and John

the Baptist, we are to strive to prepare the way for Christ's second advent."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1184.

6. While we must rouse the people with zeal and earnestness, whatother important element is necessary? Why? Psalm 5:11; 1 Thessalonians 5: 16.

"The Lord is coming. Lift up your heads and rejoice. Oh, we wouldthink that those who hear the joyful news, who claim to love Jesus, would befilled with joy unutterable and full of glory. This is the good, the joyful newswhich should electrify every soul, which should be repeated in our homes, and told to those whom we meet on the street. What more joyful news canbe communicated!"-Evangelism, p. 218.

BEWARE OF DANGERD Wednesday

April 27

7. What dangerous attitude may exist among long-time Sabbathkeepers, as they wait for the return of their Lord? Luke 12:45 (firstpart).

"Weare now upon the very borders of the eternal world, but it is thepurpose of the adversary of souls to lead us to put far off the close of time.Satan will in every conceivable manner assail those who profess to be thecommandment-keeping people of God and to be waiting for the secondappearing of our Saviour in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will lead as many as possible to put off the evil day and become in spiritlike the world, imitating its customs."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 306.

The waiting ones who look for the soon appearing ofChrist will not be idle, but diligent in business. Their work will not be donecarelessly and dishonestly, but with fidelity, promptness, and thoroughness. Those who flatter themselves that careless inattention to the things of thislife is an evidence of their spirituality and of their separation from the worldare under a great deception. Their veracity, faithfulness, and integrity aretested and proved in temporal things. If they are faithful in that which isleast they will be faithful in much."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 309.

were the thoughts and interests tending heavenward; in the other were thethoughts and interest tending to earth. And in this scale were thrown all thereading of storybooks, thoughts of dress and show, vanity, pride, etc. Oh,what a solemn moment! the angels of God standing with scales, weighing thethoughts of His professed children-those who claim to be dead to the worldand alive to God. The scale filled with thoughts of earth, vanity, and pridequickly went down, notwithstanding weight after weight rolled from thescale. The one with the thoughts and interest tending to heaven went quickly up as the other went down, and oh, how light it was! ... Said the angel:'Can such enter heaven? No, no, never. Tell them the hope they now possessis vain, and unless they speedily repent, and obtain salvation, they "mustperish.' "-Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 124, 125.

10. What will it cost us to enter heaven? Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:17.

"Christ became one flesh with us, in order that we might become onespirit with Him. It is by virtue of this union that we are to come forth fromthe grave-not merely as a manifestation of the power of Christ, but because, through faith, His life has become ours. Those who see Christ in His truecharacter, and receive Him into the heart, have everlasting life. It is throughthe Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the Spirit of God, received into theheart by faith, is the beginning of the life eternal."- The Desire of Ages, p. 388.

"Heaven will be cheap enough, if we obtain it through suffering. Wemust deny self all along the way, die to self daily, let Jesus alone appear, andkeep His glory continually in view."-Early Writings, p. 67.

"A form of godliness will not save any. All must have a deep and livingexperience. This alone will save them in the time of trouble."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 125.

Standing on GuardIn Times of Great Peril

"If we are constantly looking unto Jesus and receiving His Spirit, weshall have clear eyesight. Then we shall discern the perils on everyside, and shall guard every word we utter, lest Satan find opportunity to weave in his deceptions." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 60.

RESTLESSNESS AND APOSTASYo Sunday

May 1

1. What conditions are evident among the professed people of God today? 2 Corinthians 11:3. Why is there restlessness and no peacewith so many? Psalm 38:3 (last part).

"Weare in continual danger of getting above the simplicity of thegospel. There is an intense desire on the part of many to startle the worldwith something original, that shall lift the people into a state of spiritualecstasy, and change the present order of experience. There is certainly greatneed of a change in the present order of experience; for the sacredness ofpresent truth is not realized as it should be, but the change we need is achange of heart, and can only be obtained by seeking God individually forHis blessing, by pleading with Him for His power, by fervently praying thatHis grace may come upon us, and that our characters may be transformed. This is the change we need today, and for the attainment of this experiencewe should exercise persevering energy and manifest heartfelt earnestness."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 23.

2. How has this condition affected the Laodicean ministry? Isaiah30:9-11; 47:10. What is the result? Hosea 4:6-9.

"A new order of things has come into the ministry. There is a desire topattern after other churches, and simplicity and humility are almostunknown. The young ministers seek to be original, and to introduce newideas and new plans for labor. Some open revival meetings, and by this

means call large numbers into the church. But when the excitement is over, where are the converted ones? Repentance and confession of sin are notseen. The sinner is entreated to believe in Christ and accept Him, withoutregard to his past life of sin and rebellion. The heart is not broken. There isno contrition of soul. The supposed converted ones have not fallen upon theRock, Christ Jesus."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 18, 19.

FAITH AND OBEDIENCE VS. SPLENDORo Monday

May 2

3. How only can God's people have personal and corporate rest?Isaiah 48: 18. What should ministers be preaching?

"The Lord desires His servants today to preach the old gospel doctrine, sorrow for sin, repentance, and confession. We want old-fashioned sermons,old-fashioned customs, old-fashioned fathers and mothers in Israel. The sinner must be labored for, perseveringly, earnestly, wisely, until he shall seethat he is a transgressor of God's law, and shall exercise repentance towardGod, and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 19.

4. When the splendor of religious institutions is exalted above thepower of faith and obedience, of what is this attitude a sure indication? Hosea 10:1; 8:14.

"[God] taught His church to rely, not on worldly rank and splendor, buton the power of faith and obedience. The favor of God is above the riches ofgold and silver. The power of His Spirit is of inestimable value.

"Never are we to rely upon worldly recognition and rank. Never are we,in the establishment of institutions, to try to compete with worldly institutions in size or splendor....

"The Lord will guide all who humbly walk with Him. Humble men whotrust in Him will be the most successful workers in His cause. We shall gainthe victory, not by erecting massive buildings, in rivalry with our enemies, but by cherishing a Christlike spirit of meekness and lowliness. Better farthe cross and disappointed hopes, than to live with princes and forfeit heaven. Truth will be bitterly opposed, but never will it lose its vitality."Medical Ministry, p. 158.

"The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord hasshown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confusedthat they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called themoving of the Holy Spirit.

"The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlamof noise. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods formaking of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, ennobling, sanctifyingtruth for this time.... A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and pervertsthat which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of satanicagencies blend with the din and noise, to have a carnival, and this is termedthe Holy Spirit's working."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 36.

May4

7. How is Satan infiltrating congregations through the use of psychology and hypnosis? Colossians 2:8. How only can we be safe fromthis type of mind control? Isaiah 26:3; 1 Peter 1:13.

"This entering in of Satan through the sciences is well devised.Through the channel of phrenology, psychology, and mesmerism, he comesmore directly to the people of this generation, and works with that powerwhich is to characterize his efforts near the close of probation. The minds ofthousands have thus been poisoned, and led into infidelity."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 351.

8. How dangerous is it to study or be manipulated by the sciencesdealing with the mind? Romans 1:28; Isaiah 3:12 (last part).

"The whole philosophy of this science [hypnosis] is a masterpiece ofsatanic deception. For your souls' sake, cut loose from everything of thisorder. Every time you put into the mind of another person ideas concerningthis science, that you may gain control of his mind, you are on Satan'sground, decidedly cooperating with him. For your souls' sake, break loosefrom this snare of the enemy."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 349, 350.

Let them not join the confederacy of infidelity, popery, and Protestantism in exalting tradition aboveScripture, reason above revelation, and human talent above the divine influence and the vital power of godliness."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.White Comments], vol. 4, pp. 1141, 1142.

LESSONS FROM CHRIST'S SEPARATIONo Tuesday

May 10

5. How did Christ illustrate His separation from the Jewish church?Mark 12:1-9. How does the parable of the vineyard apply to the"church in this generation"?

"As a people the Jews had failed of fulfilling God's purpose, and thevineyard was taken from them. The privileges they had abused, the workthey had slighted, was entrusted to others.

"The parable of the vineyard applies not alone to the Jewish nation. Ithas a lesson for us. The church in this generation has been endowed by Godwith great privileges and blessings, and He expects corresponding returns."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 296.

6. What lesson does Christ's separation from the Jewish church havefor the faithful remnant century after century? Matthew 15: 14.

"Again and again the history of Christ's withdrawal from Judea hasbeen repeated. When the Reformers preached the word of God, they had nothought of separating themselves from the established church; but the religious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those that bore it were forced toseek another class, who were longing for the truth."- The Desire ofAges, p. 232.

LESSONS FROM HISTORYo Wednesday

May 11

7. What lessons about separation can we learn from Bible history?Genesis 12:1; Acts 13:46; Romans 15:4.

"In order that God might qualify him for his great work as the keeper ofthe sacred oracles, Abraham must be separated from the associations of hisearly life. The influence of kindred and friends would interfere with thetraining which the Lord purposed to give His servant. Now that Abrahamwas, in a special sense, connected with heaven, he must dwell amongstrangers. His character must be peculiar, differing from all the world."Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 126.

"The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a strikingsimilarity in every great reformation or religious movement. The principlesof God's dealing with men are ever the same. The important movements ofthe present have their parallel in those of the past, and the experience of thechurch in former ages has lessons of great value for our own time."- TheGreat Controversy, p. 343.

8. Why did the early Christians, the Waldenses and the Reformers, separate from the churches they loved? Acts 5:29.

"After a long and severe conflict, the faithful few decided to dissolve allunion with the apostate church if she still refused to free herself from falsehood and idolatry. They saw that separation was an absolute necessity ifthey would obey the word of God."-The Great Controversy, p. 45.

"For centuries the churches of Piedmont maintained their independence; but the time came at last when Rome insisted upon their submission. After ineffectual struggles against her tyranny, the leaders of these churches relunctantly acknowledged the supremacy of the power to which thewhole world seemed to pay homage. There were some, however, who refusedto yield to the authority of pope or prelate. They were determined to maintain their allegiance to God and to preserve the purity and simplicity of theirfaith. A separation took place."-Ibid., p. 64.

"It was not without a terrible struggle with himself that Luther decidedupon a final separation from the church."-Ibid., p. 143.

THE CANDLESTICK REMOVEDo Thursday

9. How will those who have rejected Christ's message (Revelation3:15-20) treat the light they once treasured? Isaiah 50:11.

"In rejecting Christ the Jewish people committed the unpardonable sin;and by refusing the invitation of mercy, we may commit the same error."The Desire of Ages, pp. 324, 325.

"After rejecting light, [those who have been blinded by the enemy] willoriginate theories which they will call 'light,' but which the Lord calls,

- 31-

Page 32: 2/94 Sabbath Bible Lessons · 2015-11-17 · Sabbath Bible Lessons (USPS 005-118) Volume 69/No. 2/April-]une 1994. Published quarterly by the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement

'Sparks of their own kindling,' by which they will direct their steps."-TheReview and Herald, December 13, 1892.

"The cause of Christ will be betrayed. Those who have had the light oftruth, and have enjoyed its blessings, but who have turned away from it, willfight down the Spirit of God. Inspired with a spirit from beneath, they willtear down that which they once built up, and show to all reasonable, Godfearing souls that they can not be trusted. They may lay claim to truth andrighteousness, but their spirit and works will testify that they are betrayersof their Lord. The attributes of Satan they call the movings of the HolySpirit."-Ibid., May 24, 1898.

10. What will happen to a denomination which refuses to heed thevoice of reproof and rebuke? Luke 20: 15, 16; Revelation 2:5.

"But 0, sad picture! those who do not submit to the influence of the Holy Spirit soon lose the blessings received when they acknowledged the truthas from Heaven. They fall into a cold, spiritless formality; they lose their interest in perishing souls: they have 'left their first love.' And Christ says unto them, 'Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, anddo the first works: or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thycandlestick out of his place, except thou repent.' He will take his Holy Spiritfrom the church, and give it to others who will appreciate it.

. "There is no greater evidence that those who have received great lightdo not appreciate that light, than is given by their refusal to let their lightshine upon those who are in darkness, and devoting their time and energiesin celebrating forms and ceremonies. Thoughts of the inner work, thenecessary purity of heart, are not entertained. The absence of harmony withGod becomes apparent. The light grows dim, goes out; the candlestick hasbeen removed."- The Review and Herald, July 16, 1895.

CHRIST'S METHOD OF REFORMATIOND Sunday

May 15

1. How is the call for separation at the same time a call for unity? John17:14,20,21.

"Christ calls for unity. But He does not call for us to unify on wrongpractices. The God of heaven draws a sharp contrast between pure, elevating, ennobling truth and false, misleading doctrines. He calls sin and impenitence by the right name. He does not gloss over wrongdoirig with a coat ofuntempered mortar. I urge our brethren to unify upon a true, scripturalbasis."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 175.

2. What type of fruit does Christ expect from true reformers? Galatians 5:22, 23.

"Christ hungers to receive from His vineyard the fruit of holiness andunselfishness. He looks for the principles of love and goodness. Not all thebeauty of art can bear comparison with the beauty of temper and characterto be revealed in those who are Christ's representatives. It is the atmosphereof grace which surrounds the soul of the believer, the Holy Spirit workingupon mind and heart, that makes him a savor of life unto life, and enablesGod to bless his work.

"A congregation may be the poorest in the land. It may be without theattraction of any outward show; but if the members possess the principles ofthe character of Christ, they will have His joy in their souls. Angels will unitewith them in their worship. The praise and thanksgiving from gratefulhearts will ascend to God as a sweet oblation."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 298.

A REFORMATION NEEDEDD Monday

May 16

3. Under what circumstances, connected with what experience, wasthe Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement brought into existence? Psalm 11:3; 2 Timothy 3:12; John 16:2.

"The Lord Jesus will always have a chosen people to serve Him. Whenthe Jewish people rejected Christ, the Prince of life, He took from them thekingdom of God and gave it unto the Gentiles. God will continue to work onthis principle with every branch of His work. When a church proves unfaithful to the work of the Lord, whatever their position may be, howeverhigh and sacred their calling, the Lord can no longer work with them. Othersare then chosen to bear important responsibilities."- The Upward Look, p. 131.

4. What was the original position of the church with reference to participation in war? What principle will true Christians take to heartwhen asked if they are ready to bear arms (which means breakingthe commandments of God)? Luke 9:56; Matthew 5:43, 44; Romans12:18-21.

"I was shown that God's people, who are His peculiar treasure, cannotengage in this perplexing war, for it is opposed to every principle of theirfaith. In the army they cannot obey the truth and at the same time obey therequirements of their officers. There would be a continual violation of conscience."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361.

THE MISSION OF REFORMERSD Tuesday

May 17

5. What are the characteristics and mission of those who will bear thebanner of the third angel's message? Isaiah 58:8-14.

"Here [Isaiah 58:8-14] are given the characteristics of those who shallbe reformers, who will bear the banner of the third angel's message, thosewho avow themselves God's commandment-keeping people, and who honorGod, and are earnestly engaged, in the sight of all the universe, in building upthe old waste places. Who is it that calls them, The repairers of the breach,The restorers of paths to dwell in? It is God. Their names are registered inheaven as reformers, restorers, as raising the foundations of many generations."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1151.

6. What is the basis of all true reform and how does it relate to ourmission as reformers? Isaiah 8:20.

"There is need of true reformers, who will point transgressors to thegreat Lawgiver and teach them that 'the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.' Psalm 19:7. There is need of men mighty in the Scriptures, men whose every word and act exalts the statutes of Jehovah, men who seekto strengthen faith."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 623, 624.

RECOGNIZING TRUE REFORMERSo Wednesday

May 18

7. How has the spirit of Elijah activated reformers throughout historyto defend the law of God, even when threatened with disfellowshipment and/or martyrdom? Romans 8:31. How does history continue to repeat itself?

"The Spirit of God came upon [the reformers] as it came upon Elijah, moving him to rebuke the sins of a wicked king and an apostate people; theycould not refrain from preaching the plain utterances of the Bibledoctrines which they had been reluctant to present. They were impelled tozealously declare the truth and the danger which threatened souls. The wordswhich the Lord gave them they uttered, fearless of consequences, and thepeople were compelled to hear the warning."- The Great Controversy, p. 606.

"False religion may prevail, iniquity may abound, the love of many maywax cold, the cross of Calvary may be lost sight of, and darkness, like thepall of death, may spread over the world; the whole force of the popular current may be turned against the truth; plot after plot may be formed to overthrow the people of God; but in the hour of greatest peril the God of Elijahwill raise up human instrumentalities to bear a message that will not besilenced."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 186, 187.

8. What character qualities will be evident in the lives of all truereformers? Matthew 7:16; 2 Peter 1:5-8.

"Reformers are not destroyers. They will never seek to ruin those whodo not harmonize with their plans and assimilate to them. Reformers mustadvance, not retreat. They must be decided, firm, resolute, unflinching; butfirmness must not degenerate into a domineering spirit. God desires to haveall who serve Him firm as a rock where principle is concerned, but meek andlowly of heart, as was Christ. Then, abiding in Christ, they can do the workHe would do were He in their place. A rude, condemnatory spirit is notessential to heroism in the reforms for this time. All selfish methods in theservice of God are an abomination in His sight."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 151.

"Of all people in the world, reformers should be the most unselfish, themost kind, the most courteous. In their lives should be seen the truegoodness of unselfish deeds."- The Ministry oj Healing, p. 157.

9. What is often needed even among reformers? Acts 3:19.

"The reformers need to be themselves reformed, not only in theirmethods of labor, but in their own hearts."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 154.

"We need a thorough reformation in all our churches. The convertingpower of God must come into the church. Seek the Lord most earnestly, putaway your sins, and tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from

Put not off the day of preparation.Slumber not in a state of unpreparedness, having no oil in your vessels withyour lamps. Let none leave their safety for eternity to hang upon a peradventure. "-....... 10. What must we do individually and collectively to carryon to a successful completion the message of reformation started by Elijah?Revelation 3:18, 19.

"A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent ofall our needs. To seek this should be our first work."-Selected Messages, book 1,p. 121.

"The old standard bearers knew what it was to wrestle with God inprayer, and to enjoy the outpouring of His Spirit. But these are passing offfrom the stage of action; and who are coming up to fill their places? How is itwith the rising generation? Are they converted to God? Are we awake to thework that is going on in the heavenly sanctuary, or are we waiting for somecompelling power to come upon the church before we shall arouse?"-Ibid.,p. 122.

"True reformation begins with soul cleansing. Our work for the fallenwill achieve real success only as the grace of Christ reshapes the characterand the soul is brought into living connection with God."- The Ministry ofHealing, p. 180.

A REFORMATION WITHINo Sunday

May 22

1. Where must the great reformatory movement begin and why? Mark7:20; Matthew 23:26; Malachi 4:6.

"You need to be converted, transformed by the renewing of your mind. When the truth takes hold of your heart, it will work a reformation in thelife."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 678.

"The law of God is the foundation of all enduring reformation. Weareto present to the world in clear, distinct lines the need of obedience to Hislaw. The great reformative movement. must begin in the home."-ChildGuidance, p. 489.

2. What lesson should we learn from the example of Abraham? Whyhave some parents not been successful in reforming their families?Genesis 18:19.

"Not until parents themselves walk in the law of the Lord with perfecthearts will they be prepared to command their children after them. A reformation in this respect is needed-a reformation which shall be deep andbroad. Parents need to reform; ministers need to reform; they need God intheir households. If they would see a different state of things, they mustbring His word into their families and must make it their counselor. Theymust teach their children that it is the voice of God addressed to them, and isto be implicitly obeyed. They should patiently instruct their children, kindlyand untiringly teach them how to live in order to please God."-Patriarchs andProphets, p. 143.

GOD CHOOSES ELISHAo Sunday

May 29

1. List the main reasons why God chose Elisha to be Elijah's successor. 1 Kings 19:19.

"Elisha's father was a wealthy farmer, a man whose household wereamong the number that in a time of almost universal apostasy had not bowedthe knee to Baal. Theirs was a home where God was honored and where allegiance to the faith of ancient Israel was the rule of daily life. In such surroundings the early years of Elisha were passed. In the quietude of countrylife, under the teaching of God and nature and the discipline of useful work,he received the training in habits of simplicity and of obedience to hisparents and to God that helped to fit him for the high position he was afterward to occupy."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 217, 218.

2. How did farming contribute toward the preparation of Elisha to bea prophet and leader in Israel? Matthew 23: 12; 25:23.

"The surroundings of Elisha's home were those of wealth; but he realized that in order to obtain an all-round education, he must be a constantworker in any work that needed to be done. He had not consented to be inany respect less informed than his father's servants. He had learned how toserve first, that he might know how to lead, instruct, and command."-Sonsand Daughters of God, p. 93.

"By faithfulness in little things, Elisha was preparing for weightiertrusts. Day by day, through practical experience, he gained a fitness for a

broader, higher work. He learned to serve; and in learning this, he learnedalso how to instruct and lead. The lesson is for all. None can know what maybe God's purpose in His discipline; but all may be certain that faithfulness inlittle things is the evidence of fitness for greater responsibilities. Every actof life is a revelation of character."-Prophets and Kings, p. 218.

3. Regardless of what our occupation may be, how may we be activelyengaged in service for God? Acts 20:35; Romans 12:6-8. Comparethe responsibility of a mother with that of a minister. Proverbs27:23.

"Wherever we may be, Christ bids us take up the duty that presentsitself. If this is in the home, take hold willingly and earnestly to make home apleasant place. If you are a mother, train your children for Christ. This is asverily a work for God as is that of the minister in the pulpit. If your duty is inthe kitchen, seek to be a perfect cook. Prepare food that will be healthful, nourishing, and appetizing. And as you employ the best ingredients in preparing food remember that you are to give your mind the best thoughts. If itis your work to till the soil or to engage in any other trade or occupation, make a success of the present duty. Put your mind on what you are doing. Inall your work represent Christ. Do as He would do in your place."-Christ'sObject Lessons, pp. 359, 360.

4. What character qualities are important in rendering service to Godand to our fellowmen? Ecclesiastes 9:10.

"Many long for special talent with which to do a wonderful work, whilethe duties lying close at hand, the performance of which would make the lifefragrant, are lost sight of. Let such ones take up the duties lying directly intheir pathway. Success depends not so much on talent as on energy andwillingness. It is not the possession of splendid talents that enables us torender acceptable service, but the conscientious performance of daily duties, the contented spirit, the unaffected, sincere interest in the welfare of others. In the humblest lot true excellence may be found. The commonest tasks, wrought with loving faithfulness, are beautiful in God's sight." -Prophets andKings, p. 219.

"This is true sanctification; for sanctification consists in the cheerfulperformance of daily duties in perfect obedience to the will of God."-Christ'sObject Lessons, p. 360.

6. How did Christ deal with the little things in His life? Matthew9:20-22; Mark 5:41-43; John 20:6,7.

"Christ in His life on earth taught the lesson of careful attention to thelittle things. The great work of redemption weighed continually upon Hissoul. As He was teaching and healing, all the energies of mind and bodywere taxed to the utmost; yet He noticed the most simple things in life and innature. His most instructive lessons were those in which by the simplethings of nature He illustrated the great truths of the kingdom of God. Hedid not overlook the necessities of the humblest of His servants. His earheard every cry of need. He was awake to the touch of the afflicted womanin the crowd; the very slightest touch of faith brought a response. When Heraised from the dead the daughter of Jairus, He reminded her parents thatshe must have something to eat. When by His own mighty power He rosefrom the tomb, He did not disdain to fold and put carefully in the properplace the graveclothes in which He had been laid away."-Christ's ObjectLessons, pp. 357, 358.

A QUICK RESPONSED Wednesday

7. What test does a call to God's work involve? 1 Kings 19:20; Luke9:61,62.

"Elisha must count the cost-decide for himself to accept or reject thecall. If his desires clung to his home and its advantages, he was at liberty toremain there. But Elisha understood the meaning of the call. He knew it wasfrom God, and he did not hesitate to obey. Not for any worldly advantagewould he forgo the opportunity of becoming God's messenger or sacrificethe privilege of association with His servant."-Prophets and Kings, p. 220.

8. What can we learn from Elisha's prompt response to God's call ashe left behind the comforts and pleasures of home? 1 Kings 19:21.

"Elisha accepted the call to service, casting no backward glance at thepleasures and comforts he was leaving....

"The call to place all on the altar of service comes to each one. We arenot all asked to serve as Elisha served, nor are we all bidden to sell everything we have; but God asks us to give His service the first place in our lives,to allow no day to pass without doing something to advance His work in theearth. He does not expect from all the same kind of service. One may becalled to ministry in a foreign land; another may be asked to give of hismeans for the support of gospel work. God accepts the offering of each."Prophets and Kings, p. 221.

A MAN OF PEACEo Thursday

9. What type of character qualities did Elisha possess? James 3:17.

"[Elisha] possessed both the capabilities of a leader among men and themeekness of one who is ready to serve. Of a quiet and gentle spirit, he wasnevertheless energetic and steadfast. Integrity, fidelity, and the love andfear of God were his, and in the humble round of daily toil he gained strengthof purpose and nobleness of character, constantly increasing in grace andknowledge. While cooperating with his father in the home-life duties, he waslearning to cooperate with God."-Prophets and Kings, p. 218.

10. Compare the mission of Elijah with that of Elisha. 1 Kings 18:15,18,21,40.

"The work of Elisha as a prophet was in some respects very differentfrom that of Elijah. To Elijah had been committed messages of condemnation and judgment; his was the voice of fearless reproof; calling king andpeople .to turn from their evil ways. Elisha's was a more peaceful mission;his it was to build up and strengthen the work that Elijah had begun; to teachthe people the way of the Lord. Inspiration pictures him as coming into personal touch with the people, surrounded by the sons of the prophets, bringing by his miracles and his ministry healing and rejoicing."-Prophets andKings, p. 235.

1. While Elijah's mission was one of reproof and rebuke, how didElisha administer the balm of Gilead to sin-sick souls? What wasthe first miracle wrought by God through him? 2 Kings 2:19-22.

"Elijah, the man of power, had been God's instrument for the overthrow of gigantic evils. Idolatry, which, supported by Ahab and the heathenJezebel, had seduced the nation, had been cast down. Baal's prophets hadbeen slain. The whole people of Israel had been deeply stirred, and manywere returning to the worship of God. As successor to Elijah was needed onewho by careful, patient instruction could guide Israel in safe paths. For thiswork Elisha's early training under God's direction had prepared him."Education, pp. 60, 61.

"This is the great day of atonement, and our Advocate is standingbefore the Father, pleading as our intercessor. In place of wrapping about usthe garments of self-righteousness, we should be found daily humbling ourselves before God, confessing our own individual sins, seeking the pardon ofour transgressions, and cooperating with Christ in the work of preparing oursouls to reflect the divine image. Unless we enter the sanctuary above, andunite with Christ in working out our own salvation with fear and trembling,we shall be weighed in the balances of the sanctuary, and shall be pronouncedwanting."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. As we approach God through the virtue of Christ's merits, we are clothedwith His priestly vestments. He places us close by His side, encircling uswith His human arm, while with His divine arm He grasps the throne of theInfinite. IMPORTANCE OF THE ATONEMENTD Wednesday

June 8

7. Why is it important for God's church in the last days to have an intelligent understanding about the atonement? Hebrews 6:19; 9:11, 12.

"Faith in the atonement and intercession ot Christ will keep us steadfast and immovable amid the temptations that press upon us in the churchmilitant." --'- The Review and Herald, June 9, 1896.

"The great plan of redemption, as revealed in the closing work forthese last days, should receive close examination. The scenes connectedwith the sanctuary above should make such an impression upon the mindsand hearts of all that they may be able to impress others. All need to becomemore intelligent in regard to the work of the atonement, which is going on inthe sanctuary above. When this grand truth is seen and understood, thosewho hold it will work in harmony with Christ to prepare a people to stand inthe great day of God, and their efforts will be successfuL" - Testimonies, vol. 5,p.575.

8. What must we do to have a clear understanding of the inner work ofthe atonement? Hebrews 12:1,2.

"[Christ's] death on the cross of Calvary was the climax of His humiliation. His work as a redeemer is beyond finite conception. Only those whohave died to self, whose lives are hid with Christ in God, can have any conception of the completeness of the offering made to save the fallen race."The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7-A, p. 460.

"Do not let your thoughts dwell upon yourselves. Think of Jesus. He isin His holy place, not in a state of solitude and grandeur, but surrounded byten thousand times ten thousand of heavenly beings who wait to do theirMaster's bidding. And He bids them go and work for the weakest saint whoputs his trust in God. High and low, rich and poor, have the same help provided."-Ibid., vol. 7, p. 933.

9. How can we apply the Balm of Gilead on others as we continue the reformation begun by Elijah and Elisha? Jeremiah 8:22; Galatians 6:1.

"There are many from whom hope has departed. Bring back the sunshine to them. Many have lost their courage. Speak to them words of cheer.Pray for them. There are those who need the bread of life. Read to themfrom the word of God. Upon many is a !?oul sickness which no earthly balmcan reach nor physician heal. Pray for these souls, bring them to Jesus. Tellthem that there is a balm in Gilead and a Physician there."-Christ's ObjectLessons, p. 418.

"It is of little use to try to reform others by attacking what we mayregard as wrong habits. Such effort often results in more harm than good."The Ministry of Healing, p. 156.

"We must offer men something better than that which they possess, even the peace of Christ, which passeth all understanding. We must tellthem of God's holy law, the transcript of His character, and an expression ofthat which He wishes them to become. Show them how infinitely superior tothe fleeting joys and pleasures of the world is the imperishable glory ofheaven. Tell them of the freedom and rest to be found in the Saviour."-Ibid.,p.157.

"By pledging his own life, Christ has made himself responsible forevery man and woman on the earth. He stands in the presence of God, saying, Father, I take upon myself the guilt of that soul. It means death to him ifhe is left to bear it. If he repents, he shall be forgiven. My blood shall cleansehim from all sin. I gave my life for the sins of the world .

. "If the transgressor of God's law will see in Christ his atoning sacrifice,if he will believe in him who can cleanse from all unrighteousness, Christ willnot have died for him in vain."- The Review and Herald, February 27, 1900.

"The chief subjects of study in [the schools of the prophets] were thelaw of God, with the instruction given to Moses, sacred history, sacred

. music, and poetry. In the records of sacred history were traced the footstepsof Jehovah. The great truths set forth by the types in the service of the sanctuary were brought to view, and faith grasped the central object of all thatsystem-the Lamb of God, that was to take away the sin of the world. Aspirit of devotion was cherished. Not only were the students taught the dutyof prayer, but they were taught how to pray, how to approach their Creator, how to exercise faith in Him, and how to understand and obey the teachingsof His Spirit. Sanctified intellect brought forth from the treasure house ofGod things new and old, and the Spirit of God was manifested in prophecyand sacred song."-Education, p. 47.

4. How did the students and teachers support themselves during theyears of study? 2 Kings 6:1,2; 4:39 (first part). What implicationsdoes this have for our schools?

"The pupils of these schools sustained themselves by their own labor intilling the soil or in some mechanical employment. In Israel this was notthought strange or degrading; indeed, it was regarded as a sin to allowchildren to grow up in ignorance of useful labor.. Every youth, whether hisparents were rich or poor, was taught some trade. Even though he was to beeducated for holy office, a knowledge of practical life was regarded as essential to the greatest usefulness. Many, also, of the teachers supported themselves by manuallabor."-Education, p. 47.

"Those who go forth from our schools to engage in mission work willhave need of an experience in the cultivation of the soil and in other lines ofmanual labor. They should receive a training that will fit them to take hold ofany line of work in the fields to which they shall be called."-Fundamentals ofChristian Education, p. 512.

REDEEMING THE TIMEo Tuesday

5. Which parable teaches that the nearness of the end should not stopus from establishing schools for our youth? Luke 19:12, 13.

"A great work must be done all through the world, and let no one conclude that, because the end is near, there is no need of special effort to buildup the various institutions as the cause shall demand."- Testimonies, vol. 6,p.440.

"Many families who, for the purpose of educating their children, moveto places where our large schools are established, would do better service forthe Master by remaining where they are. They should encourage the churchof which they are members to establish a church school where the childrenwithin their borders could receive an all-round, practical Christian education. It would be vastly better for their children, for themselves, and for thecause of God if they would remain in the smaller churches, where their help

is needed, instead of going to the larger churches, where, because they arenot needed, there is a constant temptation to fall into spiritual inactivity."Ibid., p. 198.

6. How is the third angel's message to be incorporated into the curriculum of our schools? Revelation 1:1, 3.

"The third angel's message, the great testing truth for this time, is tobe taught in all our institutions. God designs that through them this specialwarning shall be given, and bright beams of light shall shine to the world."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 128.

"The science of true education is the truth, which is to be so deeply impressed on the soul that it cannot be obliterated by the error that everywhereabounds. The third angel's message is truth, and light, and power, and topresent it so that right impressions will be made upon hearts should be thework of our schools as well as of our churches, of the teacher as well as ofthe minister. Those who accept positions as educators should prize more andmore the revealed will of God so plainly and strikingly presented in Danieland the Revelation."-Ibid., p. 131.

LEARNING FROM HISTORYo Wednesday

June 15

7. In what sense should our schools be similar to the schools of theprophets? Proverbs 2: 1-5.

"Just before Elijah was taken to heaven, he visited the schools of theprophets, and instructed the students on the most important points of theireducation. The lessons he had given them on former visits, he now repeated, impressing upon the minds of the youth the importance of letting simplicitymark every feature of their education. Only in this way could they receive themold of heaven, and go forth to work in the ways of the Lord. If conducted asGod designs they should be, our schools in these closing days of the messagewill do a work similar to that done by the schools of the prophets."-Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 512.

8. What can we learn from the relationship that existed betweenElijah, Elisha and the students? What did the apostle Peter writeabout the relationship that should exist between older and youngerworkers? 1 Peter 5:2-5.

"Let the older workers be educators, keeping themselves under thediscipline of God. Let the young men feel it a privilege to study under olderworkers, and let them carry every burden that their youth and experience willallow. Thus Elijah educated the youth of Israel in the schools of the prophets;and young men today are to have a similar training. It is not possible toadvise in every particular the part that the youth should act; but they shouldbe faithfully instructed by the older workers, and taught to look ever to Himwho is the author and finisher of our faith." -Gospel Workers, pp. 101, 102.

INVOLVING THE LAITYo Thursday

June 16

9. How can lay members be involved in supporting our educationalprograms? What blessing is promised to those who do this? Proverbs 3:9, 10; 2 Corinthians 9:7, 8.

"God calls for home missionaries. The workers for God, in the field or athome, are to be self-denying, bearing the cross, restricting their personal wants, that they may be abundant in good fruits."-Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 440, 441.

"Since the Lord is soon coming, it is time to put out our money to theexchangers, time to put every dollar we can spare into the Lord's treasury, that institutions may be established for the education of workers, who shallbe instructed as were those in the schools of the prophets. If the Lord comesand finds you doing this work, He will say: 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant: ... enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.' "-Ibid., p. 441.

10. How are education and redemption related? Luke 10:27.

"Love, the basis of creation and of redemption, is the basis of true education. This is made plain in the law that God has given as the guide of life....To love Him, the infinite, the omniscient One, with the whole strength, andmind, and heart, means the highest development of every power. It meansthat in the whole being-the body, the mind, as well as the soul-the image ofGod is to be restored."-Education, p. 16.

The Chariots of Fire

"Elijah, who was translated without seeing death, represented thosewho will be changed to immortality at Christ's second coming and willbe translated to heaven without seeing death." - Early Writings, p. 164.

KEY TEXT: "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but weshall all be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:51).

ELIJAH ON THE MOVED Sunday

June 19

1. Why did God move Elijah from place to place just prior to histranslation? 2 Kings 2:1, 2, 4, 6.

"God sees that a worker needs to be more closely associated with Him;and to bring this about, He separates him from friends and acquaintances. When He was preparing Elijah for translation, He moved him from place toplace that he might not settle down at ease, and thus fail of obtainingspiritual power. And it was God's design that Elijah's influence should be apower to help many souls to gain a wider, more helpful experience."-TheSDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 2, p. 1036.

2. How should we handle changes or moves that God may be asking usto make? Proverbs 3:6; Jeremiah 10:23.

"Let those who are not permitted to rest in quietude, who must be continually on the move, pitching their tent tonight in one place, and tomorrownight in another place, remember that the Lord is leading them, and that thisis His way of helping them to form perfect characters. In all the changes thatwe are required to make, God is to be recognized as our companion, ourguide, our dependence."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],vol. 2, p. 1036.

"Consecrate yourself to God in the morning; make this your very firstwork. Let your prayer be, 'Take me, 0 Lord, as wholly Thine. I lay all myplans at Thy feet. Use me today in Thy service. Abide with me, and let allmy work be wrought in Thee.' This is a daily matter. Each morning consecrate yourself to God for that day. Surrender all your plans to Him, to becarried out or given up as His providence shall indicate. Thus day by day youmay be giving your life into the hands of God, and thus your life will be molded more and more after the life of Christ."-Steps to Christ, p. 70.

ASSOCIATION WITH GODLY WORKERSo Monday

June 20

3. Why was Elisha so persistent in following Elijah from city to city? What lesson did Paul stress when he trained Timothy? 2 Timothy2:3-5.

"In his early labor of guiding the plow, Elisha had learned not to fail orto become discouraged, and now that he had set his hand to the plow inanother line of duty he would not be diverted from his purpose. He wouldnot be parted from his master, so long as opportunity remained for gaining afurther fitting up for service."-Prophets and Kings, p. 225.

"Ministry comprehends far more than preaching the word. It meanstraining young men as Elijah trained Elisha, taking them from their ordinaryduties, and giving them responsibilities to bear in God's work-small responsibilities at first, and larger ones as they gain strength and experience....Young, inexperienced workers should be trained by actual labor in connection with those experienced servants of God. Thus they will learn how tobear burdens.

"Those who undertake this training of young workers are doing nobleservice. The Lord Himself cooperates with their efforts. And the young mento whom the word of consecration has been spoken, whose privilege it is tobe brought into close association with earnest, godly workers, should makethe most of their opportunity." -Ibid., pp. 222, 223.

4. What did Elisha ask of Elijah as a parting gift and why? 2 Kings 2:9,10.

"Elisha asked not for worldly honor, or for a high place among the greatmen of earth. That which he craved was a large measure of the Spirit thatGod had bestowed so freely upon the one about to be honored with translation. He knew that nothing but the Spirit which had rested upon Elijah couldfit him to fill the place in Israel to which God had called him, and so he asked,'I pray thee, let a double portion of thy Spirit be upon me.' "-Prophets andKings, pp. 226, 227.

FAREWELLo Tuesday

June 21

5. How did God choose to glorify Elijah, His lonely, faithful prophet?2 Kings 2: 11. What is the significance of the chariots of fire? Psalm68:17.

"In the desert, in loneliness and discouragement, Elijah had said that hehad had enough of life and had prayed that he might die. But the Lord in Hismercy had not taken him at his word. There was yet a great work for Elijahto do; and when his work was done, he was not to perish in discouragementand solitude. Not for him the descent into the tomb, but the ascent withGod's angels to the presence of His glory."-Prophets and Kings, p. 228.

6. How did Elisha respond as his beloved friend and teacher was beingtaken from him? 2 Kings 2:12, 13.

"When the Lord in His providence sees fit to remove from His workthose to whom He has given wisdom, He helps and strengthens their successors, if they will look to Him for aid and will walk in His ways. They maybe even wiser than their predecessors; for they may profit by their experience and learn wisdom from their mistakes."-Prophets and Kings, p. 228.

ELIJAH, A REPRESENTATIVEo Wednesday

June 22

7. What was the evidence that Elisha got a double portion of Elijah'sspirit? In which way was it revealed? 2 Kings 2:14, 15.

"Elisha received a double portion of the spirit that had rested on Elijah. In him the power of Elijah's spirit was united with the gentleness, mercy, and tender compassion of the Spirit of Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary[E.G. White Comments], vol. 2, p. 1037.

8. Why is Elijah's translation significant to God's people in the lastdays? 1 Corinthians 15:51-53; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18.

"Elijah was a type of the saints who will be living on the earth at thetime of the second advent of Christ and who will be 'changed, in a moment,in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump,' without tasting of death. 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52."-Pmphets and Kings, p. 227.

9. What promise did Jesus make to His disciples concerning thekingdom of glory, and how was this promise fulfilled? Luke 9:27.

"[The Saviour] pleads that [some of His disciples] may witness a manifestation of His divinity that will comfort them in the hour of His supremeagony with the knowledge that He is of a surety the Son of God and that Hisshameful death is a part of the plan of redemption.

"His prayer is heard. While He is bowed in lowliness upon the stonyground, suddenly the heavens open, the golden gates of the city of God arethrown wide, and holy radiance descends upon the mount, enshrouding theSaviour's form. Divinity from within flashes through humanity, and meetsthe glory coming from above. Arising from His prostrate position, Christstands in godlike majesty. The soul agony is gone. His countenance nowshines 'as the sun,' and His garments are 'white as the light.' "-The Desire ofAges, p. 421.

10. How did the experience of Moses and Elijah bring encouragementto Christ just before He had to bear the cross, and how does it bringencouragement also to God's people today? Luke 9:28-31.

"Bearing the weakness of humanity, and burdened with its sorrow andsin, Jesus walked alone in the midst of men. As the darkness of the comingtrial pressed upon Him, He was in loneliness of spirit, in a world that knewHim not. Even His loved disciples, absorbed in their own doubt and sorrowand ambitious hopes, had not comprehended the mystery of His mission. Hehad dwelt amid the love and fellowship of heaven; but in the world that Hehad created, He was in solitude. Now heaven had sent its messengers[Moses and Elijah] to Jesus; not angels, but men who had endured sufferingand sorrow, and who could sympathize with the Saviour in the trial of Hisearthly life. Moses and Elijah had been colaborers with Christ. They hadshared His longing for the salvation of men. Moses had pleaded for Israel.... Elijah had known loneliness of spirit, as for three years and a half offamine he had borne the burden of the nation's hatred and its woe. Alone hehad stood for God upon Mount Carmel. Alone he had fled to the desert inanguish and despair. These men, chosen above every angel around thethrone, had come to commune with Jesus concerning the scenes of His suffering and to comfort Him with the assurance of the sympathy of heaven."The Desire of Ages, pp. 422-425.

"Moses upon the mount of transfiguration was a witness to Christ's victory over sin and death. He represented those who shall come forth from thegrave at the resurrection of the just. Elijah, who had been translated toheaven without seeing death, represented those who will be living upon theearth at Christ's second coming."-Ibid., pp. 421, 422.

Special Project Offeringfor the Pacific Northwest Mission in the U. S. A.

Responding to the increased interest in the message of reformationamong believers living in the picturesque region of the northwest UnitedStates of America, in 1986 the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movementorganized the work in the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana, andIdaho into what we call the Pacific Northwest Mission. A property suitablefor the missionary center was later secured, 35 miles southeast of Seattle, 25miles east of Tacoma, and 55 miles northeast of Olympia, in the state ofWashington. The building is in a good location, accessible from three largecities and several small towns, and includes a chapel and fellowship hall withfacilities for health and cooking classes.

The total population in this area is over 1.5 million, with many people ofvarious nationalities drawn from Asia, Australia, and other parts of theworld. Since preventive health care and naturopathy have a large number ofadvocates here, our health reform principles are a wonderful enteringwedge. We believe that it is in God's special providence that the way hasbeen opened for the soul-saving public efforts at this missionary center toshine as a light in these last days of earth's history.

The Spirit of Prophecy counsels: "We must do more than we have doneto reach the people of our cities. We are not to erect large buildings in thecities, but over and over again the light has been given me that we shouldestablish in all our cities small plants which shall be centers of influence."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 115.

"There is need of all the instruction that our missions can give. Continuein your work in the power of the same Spirit that led in its establishment.. . . God says: 'I have words of encouragement for you.' The Lord has in ourlarge cities many precious souls who have not bowed the knee to Baal, andHe has those who have worshiped Baal ignorantly. On these the light oftruth is to shine, that they may see Christ as the way, the truth and the life."-Ibid., vol. 9, pp. 141, 142.

The Pacific Northwest Mission center really needs your support at thistime. Although the area here is financially prosperous, our actual churchmembership is still very small and our income is rather limited. The monthlyexpenses for the mortgage, utilities, communication, and maintenance areall quite high and must be paid from offerings and not from the tithe. Therefore, your abundant generosity in donating to the Lord's work in the PacificNorthwest Mission is greatly needed and will be much appreciated. May theLord richly bless both the gifts and the givers!
