An exciting time

„Ready for the future“ is the motto of the 22nd Annual Meeting of the German Biogas Association. The industry is fit and has shown this time and again in the past. Today, about 7,500 biogas plants in this country supply the electricity need of over six million homes. This is only one side of the medal, however.

Biogas can do a lot more. As storable medium, biogas is available as and when it is needed. Instead of generating electricity and heat for 8,000 hours running a year, the plants can also supply electricity for eight hours and store gas for sixteen hours. As a player in the energy turnaround, biogas could close gaps when there is no wind or the sun does not shine. Biogas plants are becoming more efficient from year to year. A lot of progress has been made in the search for energy crops, also in optimizing the use of digester products. In addition to the domestic market, biogas firms are increasingly taking international markets into focus. „Biogas made in Germany“ is recognized throug-hout the world. These and other topics will be addressed at the Annual Meeting. We will have parallel events for the first time, e.g., on direct marketing, fermentation of waste of biological origin, and public rela-tions; the workshops remain an integral part of the Annual Meeting. The international section of the event will focus on China.

Parallel to the Meeting, the largest exhibition dedicated only to BIO-GAS will again take place this year. Over 400 exhibitors provide an extensive overview of the latest technical developments in the biogas sector. For the first time, the exhibition will take place together with the enertec/TerraTec shows on the Leipzig Fairgrounds. The energy change in Germany could become a historic feat – and biogas could make a decisive contribution to it. We are „Ready for the Future“ - no doubt. With this in mind, I wish you an informative 22nd Annual Meeting.

Yours,

Josef Pellmeyer, President German Biogas Association
