    Ramblings of a Parish Priest:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, October celebrates two important aspects of what it means to be a Disciple of Jesus. We celebrate Respect Life this month as well as Our Lady of the Rosary. Since the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was this past week (October 7), I will share about this important devotional this week and cover Respect Life issues next week. As Catholic Disciples of Jesus Christ, we look to our Blessed Mother as a model for what it looks like to follow Jesus. Mary is our human natures solitary boast. It is in the person and example of our Blessed Mother that we see the positive outcomes of following Jesus Christ. We don’t worship Mary (contrary to popular belief), but we do look up to her. It is not because she was Assumed into Heaven body and soul that we look up to her, although that is one of the reasons. We look up to Mary because she shows us how to do this activity we call “discipleship,” and she shows us perfectly. Yes, Mary is perfect. From the first moment of Mary’s Immaculate Conception (when she was conceived in the womb of her mother, Anne), she [Mary] humbled herself by doing the will of God the Father over her own will. This is what made her conception Immaculate: she always desired the will of the Father. When reading the Gospels, we see clearly how Mary models discipleship for us. These same scenes we read in our Sacred Scriptures are part of the Mysteries of the Rosary. Joyful Mysteries: The Annunciation (LK 1: 26-38), the Visitation (LK 1: 39-56), the Incarnation (John 1:14), the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple (LK 2: 22-40), and Finding our Lord in the Temple (LK 2: 42-52). Glorious Mysteries: Pentecost (Acts 2), the Assumption of Mary into Heaven body and soul, the Coronation of our Blessed Mother as Queen of Heaven and Earth (Revelation 12: 1-18). Luminous Mysteries: The Wedding at Cana (John 2: 1-12). Sorrowful Mysteries: Mary may not be mentioned, but she was certainly present (John 19: 25-27). By praying the Holy Rosary, we are able to see how Mary responded to the Blessed Trinity by accepting

the will of God the Father, being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, and following her son Jesus. It’s through the rosary that we become better disciples of Jesus Christ. SO, START PRAYING THE ROSARY!!! Some common excuses are: “It takes too long to pray the Rosary!” The Rosary takes a minimum of 15 minutes. It doesn’t take long at all. Suck it up and offer it up. “It’s boring!” It’s meditative…which to the untrained mind can be boring. If you can do yoga, breathing exercises, or sit and read a book then you can pray the Rosary. Suck it up. “I don’t know how to pray the Rosary” Google it! There are even apps you can download on your phone. “Rosaries are for grandmas.” Have you seen how holy your grandma is? Now you know why. Join her! On the off chance your grandma isn’t that holy…offer to pray with her anyway. “Blah blah blah blah [complaining moans] blah blah” I don’t know how to help a chronic complainer. Get over it. Taking 15 minutes out of your day to pray the Holy Rosary will only enrich your life. I guarantee it. Start today. Follow the example of our Blessed Mother and we too will one day be assumed into heaven body and soul when we rise from the dead. In Christ through Mary, P.S- While today we celebrate our patron, St. Edward, at all the Masses, his actual feast day is this Tuesday, October 13. St. Edward himself had a deep love and devotion to our Blessed Mother under the title, Our Lady of Walsingham. St. Edward made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham where he prayed the rosary, went to confession, and received the Eucharist at Holy Mass. It would be a beautiful thing to gather as a family on our Feast Day and pray the Rosary together seeking the intercession of Our Lady and our patron, St. Edward.

    Worship Schedule

Novenas are an ancient tradition of prayer in times of great need. The practice traces its origin to when the apostles prayed for nine days between the Ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit. The rosary, too, is a powerful intercessory tool. If you find yourself with more time than usual during times of social distancing, you can spiritually join with millions of Catholics by praying the rosary for worldwide healing.

Pray the following for nine consecutive days:

O Mary, full of grace, patroness of this nation and Mother of the Church, in this time of worldwide illness we ask your intercession for the human family before your Son’s throne of grace and mercy. We ask for strength in adversity, health in weakness, and comfort in sorrow. We pray for all who have lost jobs or security at this time. May your Son watch over all who are sick and their caretakers, bring to heaven all who have died, and give wisdom to all who are seeking a cure to the Coronavirus. [mention your own intentions]

St. Damien of Molokai, minister to lepers, pray for us St. Anthony the Great, who healed infectious diseases, pray for us St. Edmund, patron of victims of pandemics, pray for us St. Frances Cabrini, foundress of hospitals, pray for us St. Agatha, patron of nurses, pray for us St. Luke, patron of doctors, pray for us St. Joseph, patron of the dying, pray for us All you holy angels and saints, pray for us

Help us, O Blessed Mother, to be filled with confidence in the tender compassion of our God. Calm our fears and help us to trust in the Divine Physician. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Congratulations to this week's $50 winner, Ann Tudor with Card #13, the 7 of Diamonds. Visit the parish website for ticket information and King of Heart rules at stedparish.org.

    PRO-LIFE FOOD DRIVE Help Needed

Next weekend will be our monthly Pro-Life Food Drive for St. Thomas of Canterbury. Please bring non-

perishable Food items, cleaning supplies, paper products and personal hygiene items to the vestibule before or after Mass.

    BABY BOTTLE PROJECT

Our parish is now participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization

directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church this weekend, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 25. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note: the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. If you are making a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Center. Thank you! You can also go directly to their website at: GoTWC.org or call 773-794-1313 to donate.
