DEAR EDITORI intended to write this sooner, but then December came... you know the rest!

I really liked the Fall issue of Folia Montana. I particularlyfound The Mount in the Community a wonderful article. Itsaid so clearly to me that the traditions of mycongregation, the Sisters of Charity who founded MountSaint Vincent, live on with vigor in the Mount community. While few of those mentioned may know it, or have evenheard the word, they are carrying on the charism of theSisters of Charity. Their work for the aging, for women, for children; their promotion of social responsibility, ofresponse to disaster, of accessible education – these allmirror the work we have done through the more thanone hundred fifty years of our presence in Halifax.Reading the article made my heart glad; thank you!

Over the years, I have been associated with the Mount asa student (BA, BEd, MA), as a lecturer, and as a Boardmember. I am proud of that affiliation; this article makesme even more so.

This year is one that will make the history books.

Mount students have excelled in all areas of campus life, from academics and sports to social responsibility. Ourfirst-ever Rhodes Scholar, Jake Yorke, BSc ’08, heads toOxford University in September, and Christine Whitehouseand Sarah Sullivan’s outstanding academic performanceswere recognized with Millennium Scholarships.

For the first time, both the men’s and women’s Mysticsbasketball teams brought home silver medals from theCanadian Colleges Athletic Association Championships andwrapped up a second consecutive perfect season. Thewomen’s Mystics soccer team also captured gold at theAtlantic Colleges Athletic Association Championships.

The University itself has made achievements worthy of thehistory books. Our new strategic plan, Destination 2012,was approved in the fall by Senate and the Board ofGovernors, and implementation is now underway. Thisplan will guide us into the future as a national leader increating the best university experience and in deliveringthoughtful, engaged citizens who make a positive impacton their world.

Students are living this vision, from campaigning forcrosswalk changes to make the trip the Mount safer tocollecting sneakers and cleats for needy children in TheGambia.

Our Capital Campaign is in full swing and has received anoutstanding contribution of $714,000 from the studentbody. Building Tomorrow Together is the Mount’s mostambitious campaign ever, and through donations fromalumnae, students and the community we are movingcloser to the realization of our goals. But we still havework to do, and the support of our alumnae is a proudpart of our legacy.

Keep in touch as we embark on an exciting future – theMount is on the move!

STRATEGIC PLANDestination 2012

As we move into the 21st century, theeducational landscape is shiftingdramatically. Technology isrevolutionizing the classroom andcreating options for academicengagement that are borderless, immediate, and consumer-driven. In the globalized economy, geographicboundaries are rapidly disappearing. These emerging societal trends makeway for the future development of Mount Saint Vincent University at a time when higher education has neverbeen so important.

When it comes to planning for thefuture, the Mount is “ahead of thecurve”. Under the direction of Presidentand Vice-Chancellor Kathryn Laurin, aninnovative strategic planning process wasset in motion in 2006 to involve theMount’s entire community – faculty, staff, students, alumnae, and even businessand community leaders. Over 12 months, more than 75 per cent of faculty andstaff participated in excess of 55 focusgroups, town halls, information sessions, workshops and committee meetings. The result is Destination 2012, theUniversity’s new strategic plan which setslong-term objectives, measurable goals, and focuses resources. The plan wasoverwhelmingly adopted by Senate andthe University’s Board of Governors inlate 2007.

“Much has changed since our inception135 years ago, but I believe our founderswould no doubt recognize ourcommitment to transforming livesthrough education and research and ourcommitment to social responsibility,”said President Laurin. “They would beproud that we are still an innovativeinstitution whose external researchfunding has quadrupled in the last fiveyears. And our founders would be happyto see that we honour our heritage whilelooking to the future.”

But just as some things will neverchange, others simply must. In this time

of institutional renewal, the Mount has anew vision: to become the nationalleader in creating the best universityexperience and in developing thoughtful,

“I hope that the alumnaewill continue to support theefforts of the University inremaining relevant anddynamic. I also hope thatthere are many alumnaewho, like me, see their ownexperience at the Mountreflected in the new mission;to be the national leader increating the best universityexperience for all membersof our community and indeveloping thoughtful, engaged citizens who makea positive impact on theirworld; and will supportDestination 2012 with theirown engagement.”

engaged citizens who have a positiveimpact on their world.

The best university experience meanscreating an environment where lives aretransformed through academic excellenceand opportunity, where modern spacesare equipped with innovative tools forteaching and learning, and where theclassroom is invigorated by interactionand ideas.

Mount Saint Vincent University Chancellorand Congregational Leader for the Sistersof Charity, Sister Donna Geernaert, BSc’64, said the new plan is the right movefor the University. “I am confident thatthe new strategic vision for the Mountwill position it well for the future.”

To build on an already exceptionallearning environment, four central goalsemerge in Destination 2012: Quality;Advancement of Women; Engagement;Accessibility.

Lara Ryan, BPR ’92, President of theMSV Alumnae Association and memberof the Strategic Planning SteeringCommittee sees Destination 2012 as anexample of an inclusive process that setsthe Mount apart. “There was a level ofpassion for the University and its historyand legacy that was inspiring,” she said.“To move an institution successfully intothe rapidly changing 21st century is anoverwhelming feat. The strategicplanning process allowed us to examinestrengths and identify opportunities over a huge range of issues.”

While the University has long been opento both men and women seeking anarts, science, or professional education, the commitment to education as a rightfor all people, the direction to nurtureknowledge and spirit, and the dedicationto social responsibility burns as brightlytoday as it did in 1873. As the Mountmoves into its future, it is preparing totransform an academic environment that will ultimately transform lives.

A familiar face – and voice – is leavingthe Mount after 37 years this December.Violetta “Vi” Porter has decided to retireand she takes with her many fondmemories and the admiration ofcountless students, parents andcolleagues.

In 1971, Porter’s sisters were working inhousekeeping and told her of an openingon the switchboard. “I had an interviewin the morning and they called me atnoon,” she recalled. “I started the nextday.”

Over the years, she has seen manychanges at the University. Before callerscould direct dial to individuals oncampus, Porter and her colleagues

answered up to 1500 to 1600 a day. There are still few hundred calls everyday.

Many will recognize Porter in her role atAssisi Hall, where she will end her careerat the Mount. “The changes here havebeen incredible. Sometimes, I still can’tbelieve it. When I started, the Sisters (of Charity) lived in residence. Males wereonly allowed in ‘dating rooms’ for onehour.”

Today, Assisi has floors for male students.“I think this has worked out really well. It’s truly a sign of the times.”

Former MSVU students continue to bringtheir children in to see her. Even asecond generation of students living inAssisi has parents who are pleasantlysurprised to see Porter still at her desk.

She is looking forward to spending moretime with her husband of 47 years, Scott, and their grandchildren in her retirementbut the departure will be bittersweet. “Itwill be a sad day when I leave. I love ithere. I know everyone and I love themall. This is home for me.”

The Duke of Edinburgh Young CanadiansChallenge program is open to Canadiansbetween the ages of 14 and 25. Thereare three levels in the program (bronze, silver and gold), and four parts to eachlevel (volunteer service, skills, physicalactivity and expeditions). Myketyn Driscollstarted the program in February 2003,knowing it would be challenging.

“The first summer in the program, we dida hike in Cape Chignecto, and it washard!” she exclaims. “I was not mentallyor physically prepared for it. But Irealized that you can’t just stop halfwaythrough doing something: you have tocomplete it. And once you do all thework for something, you feel better whenyou're done.”

She chose to work her way through allthe levels of the program on a semi-independent basis, in conjunction withher Scout group First Woodlawn. Shediscovered the program through herScout leader, who is one of the program’sadvisors. Some of the activities thatMyketyn Driscoll performed to completeher levels included volunteer and skilldevelopment through music and coachingswimming for the provincial SpecialOlympics.

SARAH COSTELLOE, BTHM ’08 has broughther success with her from her home inTrinidad. Costelloe was recently“absolutely overwhelmed” to learn shewas the recipient of this year’s Alumnae-Students’ Union Leadership Award.

Costelloe attended the Student AwardsNight ceremony not knowing she wouldbe presented with the award. “My heartwas racing. It was truly a wonderfulmoment.” Her roommate, LaurenMirabelli, also a student in the Bachelorof Tourism and Hospitality Managementprogram, secretly submitted her name.

Later, she told Costelloe that she hadseen her do so much for others that it was “time for her to get noticed”.

Costelloe has demonstrated dedication, guidance and accomplishment whileworking with the International Students’Society, the World University Service ofCanada, Student Refugee Program, andthe Business & Tourism Society.

Her enthusiasm, passion and positiveoutlook was very evident to thecommittee comprised of alumnae andstudent. “She rolls up her sleeves, jumpsin and gets the job done,” said LaraRyan, BPR ’92, President of the MSVAlumnae Association when presenting theaward. Costelloe’s satisfaction in helpingothers was demonstrated in her role inthe passing of a student levy for refugeestudents and then bringing a refugeestudent to campus to speak. This levywill be used to sponsor one refugeestudent at the Mount every year. The firststudent will arrive in the fall of 2008.

The Mount sees great potential inCostelloe, especially when it comes to motivating and inspiring her fellowstudents. That’s why she was namedValedictorian for the 2008 graduatingclass.

Abriel was in The Gambia working onbehalf of Dr. Stephen Perrott, AssociateProfessor of Psychology and ProjectDirector for the Community-basedPolicing in The Gambia project. Duringher three-month visit, she learned thatdespite poverty and illness, sharing is a way of life for Gambians.

“In The Gambia, the idea of sharing isunconditional – no matter how much orhow little you have, you share it withyour family, your neigbhours and yourfriends,” said Abriel. “It’s a contagiousspirit of giving, and I guess you couldsay that the Mystics have caught thespirit.”

After sharing her overwhelmingexperience in The Gambia with herteammates, it didn’t take long for themto decide they wanted to make adifference. Knowing that, even withoutmodern equipment or proper gearGambian children embrace sport andplay, the idea of donating sneakersseemed like an obvious choice. Women’sMystics coach Dyrick McDermott, BA ’94,wasn’t surprised to see how inspired histeam was by Abriel’s story.

“As part of our training, we focus onnurturing our players to recognize theprivilege they enjoy as varsity athletes,”said McDermott. “Shelagh’s verypersonal experience showed us thatsomething as simple as a pair ofsneakers could make a difference to a child who is used to playing sportsbarefoot.”

The Mystics Sole Search collected over250 pairs of sneakers and cleats whichare on their way to the Port of Gambia.

It’s true that when you give, you receive.

It was an amazing year for bothWomen’s and Men’s basketball at MSVU.For the second consecutive year thewomen went undefeated in AtlanticCanadian Athletics Association (ACAA)play and won their fourth title in six years.

Contributing to this success wasKatherine Brien, a third-year businessadministration student and MVP of theACAA and a Canadian College AthleticsAssociation (CCAA) All-Canadian. Theteam capped off the year with a silvermedal at the national championships inTruro. “It was an experience I will neverforget,” she said. Brien will be back toplay with the Mystics next year.

The Brien family is well-known on thebasketball court at the Mount. In fact,Katherine was not the only Brien tobring home a CCAA silver medal thisyear. Her brother Mark was the Mount’sMVP and CCAA Nationals First Team AllStar. Mark Brien, BBA ’08, played on thisyear’s history-making men’s basketballteam, becoming the first team to go 23-0 in ACAA action for the secondconsecutive year. Their brother Dave,BBA ’97, as Assistant Coach of the Men’sbasketball team (and a former Mystichimself ), enjoyed the feel of a silvermedal around his neck as well.

Mark feels his time as both an MSVUstudent and Mystic have well preparedhim to tackle joining the workforce. Hegraduated in May of this year with hisBachelor of Business Administrationwith a major in Marketing. “I reallyenjoyed my time at the Mount,” he said.“It was a great change from a largeruniversity. I truly felt I got to know my fellow students and playersextremely well.”

It has been an honour torepresent the alumnaeperspective at the University. Asalumnae, we are keystakeholders in the future of theMount and ensuring theUniversity’s reputation foracademic excellence.

The MSVAA has had a busy fewmonths making sure that we are

offering opportunities for alumnae to be more engaged andsupporting student success. Our wine tasting at Vin Art beforeChristmas was a great opportunity for alumnae to catch up witheach other and to stock up on a few last minute presents. InMarch we welcomed Patrick Sullivan BBA ’85, President ofWorkopolis back to campus as the guest speaker for the HalifaxChapter dinner. His heartfelt address was funny and sincere andcertainly made me proud of the role that the Mount has playedin helping to build leaders in our community.

We continue to support the University as it moves into theimplementation stage of the new strategic plan Destination 2012.We also applaud the Board of Governors, the Universityadministration and the Capital Campaign Cabinet as they moveforward in their efforts to raise $16 million for Building TomorrowTogether. The MSVAA is pleased to support the campaign as anorganization and through the personal gifts of individual boardmembers.

You will see information in this edition of Folia about the AnnualMSV Golf Classic scheduled for August 14th, 2008 at GraniteSprings. Please mark your calendar and help us to make this atrue alumnae event. It will be a great opportunity to catch upand meet some other members of the Mount community.

You may also notice that we’ve changed plans for AlumnaeWeekend. Instead of a series of events during the summer,Alumnae Weekend will be held in the fall. I hope you will alsotake advantage of this great opportunity to be engaged both oncampus and with other alumnae.

Best wishes for a happy and safe summer. I hope to see yousoon.

By Jeff Britton, MEd ’06January, 2008

This morning we had a class meeting on the grounds that willsoon be Orkeeswa Secondary School in Lashaine, a smallMaasai village in northern Tanzania. This was a special day for the students as they were meeting their new teachers, meand my girlfriend Jenny Walker, for the first time. A few of thestudents recognized Jenny and I, as we had visited theirfamilies’ bomas earlier this week. For the past four days I’ve feltas if I’ve fallen into the pages of National Geographic magazine. After pinching myself a few times I’ve come to realize this is infact reality.

Jenny and I weren’texpecting to spend fourmonths in Tanzania. In fact, our plans were quitesolidified – we were meantto be volunteering with theInternational HumanityFoundation (IHF), a smallNGO based in the UnitedStates which operates sixorphanages and educationcenters in Kenya, Indonesiaand Northern Thailand.Jenny had already spenttime volunteering with IHFand together we wereexcited to give as much aswe could to the 53 childrenliving in IHF’s Kenya Center based in Nakuru.

We began fundraising in mid-October, with 100 per cent of ourdonations going directly to our humanitarian initiatives on theground in the Rift Valley province of Kenya. We called ourproject “Climbing 4 Kenya”. The basis of our fundraising wasthat Jenny and I would climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highestpoint on the African continent and the tallest free-standingmountain rise in the world. We sold our car, sold our furniture, gave up our apartment and cashed in our savings to afford ourtravel expenses and climbing fees, however, our plans weresuddenly flipped upside-down.

Kenya’s controversial Presidential elections were held in lateDecember, resulting in political unrest that evolved into tribalviolence and ethnic cleansing, leaving more than 1,000 Kenyansdead, and over 300,000 homeless within the span of one

month. After postponing ourdeparture for three weeks wereceived the horrific news thatIHF’s Kenya Center had beendestroyed by the rioting andthat the children wereevacuated to a village a fewhours north. Althoughassistance was needed morethan ever, we were told not to enter Kenya. Flights into Nairobiwere being cancelled and we had a difficult decision to make.

After considering our options Jenny and I decided we wouldleave as scheduled in early February, arriving directly inTanzania. We summated Mount Kilimanjaro at 6:25 am onFebruary 19th after four and a half days of trekking. With theclimb finished, we continued our search for humanitarianprojects in Tanzania to keep us busy in hopes that at somepoint soon it would become safe enough to enter Kenya andhelp rebuild IHF’s Kenya Center. The need for humanitarianassistance in Tanzania was overwhelming, as the country isranked one of the world’s poorest nations and is home to overtwo million orphans. We were contacted by a very small NGOcalled the Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT),and were invited to assist with their project, building OrkeeswaSecondary School, the village of Lashaine’s first secondaryschool. With less than five per cent of all Tanzanians having theoption of attending secondary school, this was a project Jennyand I were immediately interested in.

We’ve now had the opportunity to meet the majority of ourstudents and look forward to beginning tutoring in hopes ofincreasing their level of English by the April 14th opening day ofschool. As we read through our students’ profiles and meet theboys and girls in person it’s impossible not to feel a pang inour hearts … the chance to attend Orkeeswa Secondary Schoolis a golden opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.

As we, prepared to leave for Eastern Africa I began sharing anew message in my profession as a motivational speaker andyouth leadership consultant, entitled “Be the Change!” I believeit takes great courage to create positive change within our lives,as well as in our communities and within the global community.I encourage you to consider how you can become involved inyour local and/or the global community.

Asante Sana!

Over 150 Mount Saint Vincent alumnaeand students gathered for a night ofnetworking and reuniting with oldfriends at the 9th Annual HalifaxAlumnae Dinner held on March 6, 2008.The event took place in the Multi-Purpose Room in Rosaria StudentCentre. Verity Turpin, BPR ’93 kept theevening moving which included remarksfrom Lara Ryan, BPR ’92, President ofthe Mount Saint Vincent AlumnaeAssociation and Kathryn Laurin,President and Vice-Chancellor, MountSaint Vincent University.

A highlight of the evening was whenNancy Zwaagstra, BScHE ’83 spokeeloquently about the former Chair of theBoard of Governors, Gwen Halliburton.Haliburton was awarded an HonoraryMembership in the Mount Saint VincentAlumnae Association for hercontributions to the AlumnaeAssociation.

Patrick Sullivan, BBA ’85 was this year’sguest speaker. Sullivan is the Presidentof Workopolis, Canada’s leading providerof recruitment and job-search solutions. The crowd enjoyed his entertaining andinformative speech as he spoke abouttoday’s multigenerational workplace andthe challenges this presents to

organizations. “This is a fascinating andchallenging time,” said Sullivan. “Inmanaging groups or raising children, look for commonality rather than thedifferences and be open to thepossibility that ‘kids today’, as well as those older, might be able to showeveryone a newer, better way ofworking.”

Sullivan spoke with admiration as heremembered his days at the Mount andthe life lessons the University gave him.Sullivan referenced the University’ssibling tuition plan as one of thereasons he chose the Mount as a non-traditional student. Both his sisters,Anne Marie Laing, BA (Hon) ’83, BEd ’86and Elizabeth Daley, CertBusi ’92 wereattending at the time. During hisremarks, Sullivan referenced his sisters, his mother and his daughter, who wereall in attendance at the dinner, makingit a truly multi-generational evening.

“I am grateful for this University forbeing so flexible in accepting a studentwho was NOT the current demographic –for making room and making welcome arelatively old married family guy. ….I amproud to be able to say I am a MountSaint Vincent alumnus. You gave me the means to the life I have now, and Iam grateful.”
