FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Continuing with our reflections on the importance, necessity and beauty of Sunday, the Lord’s Day, I quote from the beginning of St. John Paul’s Apostolic Letter, Dies Domini, which encourages everyone to rediscover Sunday: “Do not be afraid to give your time to Christ! Yes, let us open our time to Christ, that He may cast light upon it and give it direction. He is the One who knows the secret of time and the secret of eternity, and He gives us “his day” as an ever new gift of his love. The rediscovery of this day is a grace which we must implore, so that, not only we may live the demands of faith to the fullest, but also we may respond concretely to the deepest human yearnings. Time given to Christ is never time lost, but is rather time gained, so that our relationships and indeed our whole life may become more profoundly human.” For us Sunday is above all an Easter celebration, absolutely illumined by the glory of the Risen Christ. In his apostolic letter, the Holy Pontiff encourages us all to rediscover and enjoy the beauty of nature, just as God the Creator looked at his very good work, gazing at it with joyous delight. (11) Yet, when understood in depth, this aspect is inseparable from what the first pages of Scripture tell us of the plan of God, in the creation of the world. It is true that the Word was made flesh in the fullness of time (Gal 4:4); but it is also true that, in virtue of the mystery of his identity as the eternal Son of the Father, He is the origin and end of the universe. This active presence of the Son in the creative work of God is revealed fully in the Paschal Mystery, in which Christ, rising as the first fruits of those who had fallen asleep (1 Cor 15:20), established the new creation and began the process, which He himself will bring to completion when He returns in glory to deliver the kingdom to God the Father ..., so that God may be everything to everyone (1 Cor 15:24,28). As Genesis concludes in its account of the week of creation in the first chapter, we read: on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done and blessed the seventh day and hallowed it (Gn 2:2-3). So, the biblical Sabbath is linked to this mystery of God’s rest. The theme of God’s rest (cf. Gn 2:2) and the rest which He offered to the people of the Exodus when they entered the Promised Land (cf. Ex 33:14; Dt 3:20; 12:9; Jos 21:44; Ps 95:11) is re-read in the New Testament, in the light of the definitive Sabbath rest (Heb 4:9) into which Christ himself has entered by his Resurrection. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Gn 1:1) The poetic style of the Genesis story conveys well the awe which people feel before the immensity of creation and the resulting sense of adoration of the One who brought all things into being from nothing. If we Christians celebrate Sunday as the Lord’s Day, it is because it was on this day that Christ’s Resurrection occurred; it is the fulfillment of the first creation and the beginning of the “new creation”. God’s “rest” reaches its full achievement in the risen Christ. Brothers and Sisters, let us pause every Sunday not only because we need a legitimate rest, but especially to celebrate the work of God. I pray that as we continue our reflection on the mystery of the Lord’s Day we may learn to appreciate Sunday as a feast day and a day of faith, even in the changing circumstances of our own times. I hope everyone, especially those in greatest need, will be able to take a bit of vacation to restore their physical and spiritual energy and recover a healthy contact with nature. I also entrust to the Blessed Virgin those who, for various reasons, are unable to leave their usual occupations and everyday surroundings. I assure everyone of a remembrance in my prayer. May our Blessed mother grant us the grace to love, the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, more and more. May God bless you! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

What is this Levi’s® Stadium that I keep hearing about? The Levi’s® stadium, home of the 49ers, is located one mile from Our Lady of Peace. In addition to the 49ers football games, it will host multiple events, such as domestic and international soccer, college football, motorcross, concerts and various civic events.
How does that affect me? You can expect an increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the hours leading up to the event and even more so when the event ends. Expect up to 70,000 people on the road on Event Days.
When are the games/events? Levi’s® Stadium Event Schedule* August/September 2014 Saturday, August 2 SJ Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders 7:30pm Sunday, August 17 49ers vs. Denver Broncos 1:00pm Sunday, August 24 49ers vs. San Diego Chargers 1:00pm Friday, August 29 Friday Night Lights High School Football Doubleheader 4:30pm Sunday, September 14 49ers vs. Chicago Bears 5:30pm Sunday, September 28 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles 1:00pm
What can I do?
A few tips that will help:
• The games begin on August 2, 2014: for details on game days please visit http://www.levisstadium.com/49ers-games/schedule/.
• To help understand the flow of traffic, please visit the map of the parking lots for Levi fans which is available at http://www.levisstadium.com/getting-here/parking.
• The 49ers are coming up with an app that will show road blocks and detours during game days; will keep you posted. You may also see link @ http://www.levisstadium.com/49ers-games/stadium-app/.
Consider alternate routes and plan ahead
What Our Lady of Peace is doing to help? • OLOP Window Stickers will help officers recognize church goers and direct traffic
accordingly. These will be mailed to registered parishioners before August 2nd. Alternately, they are available at the Rectory. These are not parking tickets; just for identification by traffic police. • To ensure parking for parishioners, on event days, the parking lots will
be monitored by a security team. Parking will be limited to 3-hours and parking tickets will be distributed at the entrance of the parking lot. However, if you need to be here longer, please ask the guard to extend your visit by 3 more hours.

Welcome, Fr. Thomas Steinke ! We welcome Fr. Steinke, who has joined Our Lady of Peace, as Parocial Vicar. Prior to discerning his call to priesthood, he worked as a computer programmer for
several years at Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, Ohio . From June 1999 to 2007, he was a cloistered monk at Most Holy Trinity Monastery in Petersham, MA. The charism at that order is, adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. After being called out, he spent a year as a high school religious teacher in Belize, before joining the Institute of the Incarnate Word in 2008. While studying at the seminary in Chillum, MD, he also received a licentiate degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America on May 17, 2014. Fr. Steinke was ordained a priest on May 31, 2014. Humorously, he describes himself as a ” boring priest of German descent who was ordained later in life.” He adds, the other seminarians used to ask him if he knew Aristotle. According to him “he is somewhat of a space cadet and consequently, he often gets lost while driving and is found wandering around aimlessly”.
