Radio killed the radio star: Part Two - by Ron Rogers

What part does radio play in selling records? The relationship between record companiesand radio goes back for as long as radio andrecords have existed. But the playing field haschanged dramatically in the years since. Radio

"I think the recordcompanies are over -reacting

a little bit. I think in somecases, like this fellow from

the record store, the opinionis just plain ignorant."

Ross DaviesCHUM -FM

is no longer the sole outlet for record companiesto sell product - video, television, touring andretail have all become equally important aspectsin the marketing of new albums. And radio isjust another avenue for the promotion'sdepartment to explore.

So perhaps the confusion lies in the partof the record company. While they continue tohoist aspersions on radio for falling back onclassic formats to feed audiences, they areessentially missing the point entirely.

The job of radio is and always will be todraw listeners and secure advertisers. Radiodoes this by programming the music that theyfeel the listeners want to hear. If that musichappens to be The Rolling Stones or PinkFloyd or The Doors, as opposed to the latestSoundgarden or I Mother Earth, so be it. In theend, it's the people's choice, and at the moment, the people want classic rock.

The insinuation that radio in Toronto isat its all-time low raised the ire of a number ofprogrammers in the city, not surprisingly.According to Danny Kingsbury, vice-presidentof programming for Q107 and AM640, "It'snothing radio hasn't heard before, but I'm not

sure what radio has to do to become the heroagain."

The opinions of the record companiesand retailers didn't fall on deaf ears at CHUM -FM, and program director Ross Davies wasquick to respond.

"I think the record companies are over-reacting a little bit. I think in some cases, likethis fellow from the record store, the opinionis just plain ignorant. He's so out of it andwrong that it's not worth commenting on.

"Radio does have to survive, and it doesresearch to find what the audience needs. Ifthose needs call for this type of music or thattype of music, then that's what they're tellingyou, and it behooves you to follow up on thatadvice."

The record companies argue that radiosimply doesn't give new artists a breakanymore, and doesn't play a lot of new music

"It's really easy forthese record company

people to sit on a soapboxand go on about a perfect

world. I've got somereal concerns about therecord companies ... "

period. But as MIX 99.9 program director J.J.Johnston points out, radio's job isn't to breaknew acts.

"Radio is not in the business of breakingrecords. Radio is in the radio business. Musicis a big part of it. Radio is really simple - findout what they want and give it to them.

"It's really easy for these record companypeople to sit on a soapbox and go on about a

perfect world. I've got some real concernsabout the record companies and the waythey do things, but I'm not going to put themin print."

Johnston argues that the record companiescontinue to dump on an age demographic, 35-49 year -olds, that continues to listen to musicand buy records. True, they may not buy asmany records as they once did, buy they'restill buying.

"Why have the record companies turnedtheir backs on this market? There's a hell of amarket there in the 35-49 area. These peopleare starting to come back into the fold. But Idon't see any marketing going on for thesepeople, it's all done at 18-24 year olds.

"I think that demographic buys records. We're not talking about a major item here,we're talking about a $10 CD. Yes they havea lot of options (to spend their money on) butthe younger people have a lot of options too."

When it comes to playing new acts andnew product, Johnston points out that thenumber of new releases has increaseddramatically over the last few years. Siftingthrough the morass of new product to findsomething that will fit your format isn't aneasy task for any programmer.

"Everyone says 'God, I wish radio couldbe like it used to be'. My argument is, 'well,I wish everything could be like it used to be'.Back then, there were only a few stations thatplayed music, so of course they could playeverything. Today, it's a niche format situation,in marketing period, not just in radio.

"And the amount of new releases wereceive today, compared to the old days, isunbelievable. There's 50% more acts outthere trying to get played on radio."

The hue and cry from many at radio isthat music today simply doesn't cut it whencompared to that of twenty years back. Recordcompanies will say that's bogus, but RossDavies says the proof is in the purchasing.

"I think the proliferation of classic rockspeaks to some extent to the quality of musicthat's out today, versus what was put out in the'60s and '70s. When you have Pink Floyd'sold albums outselling their new albums, whatdoes that tell you?"

"To be brutally honest, for the last threeof four years it's been quite light in AOR,"says Danny Kingsbury. "There just hasn'tbeen a lot of multi -selling artists that theaudience continually wants to hear."

According to Gene Stevens, operationsmanager at Z97.3 FM in Toronto, it's unfair

"... newspapers andtelevision got very

interested when TheRolling Stones were in

town. Mick Jagger buys atoothpick at Canadian Tire

and it's news."Gene Stevens

Mailer exhalts Madonna ... ! Whilemost of the world's media has tagged Madonnaas "a slut", it's refreshing to see a world -classauthor like Norman Mailer put her on ahallowed pedestal . . . sort of. In the Augustissue of Esquire, the aging Mailer tends toover -pontificate, but nevertheless comes upwith a fascinating one-on-one with "the SexQueen of America". Madonna reveals thatsince she appeared on the David Lettermanshow, "the news is that I've lost my mind."But she has a couple of revelations ofLetterman's production crew (writers) whowere apparently eager for her to breach all thecodes of ethics when on camera, supposedlywith the approval of Letterman. It's afascinating read. (EC: I'll bet Jay Leno wouldhave smelled the panties . . . !)

A night of star gazing ... Droppedby my favourite eatery the other night (EC:You call Centro an eatery . . . ?) and the placewas loaded with celebrities. Livent's NormanZagier caught my eye and introduced me toCloris Leachman, who is replacing ElaineStritch in Showboat. CHUM AM's morningguy Bob Magee and his wife, MuchMusic'sfashion editor Jeanne Beker, waved from thesouth bank of tables. Dan Ackroyd, who washosting one of his many Centro dinners, stopped to say hello, which gave me theopportunity to introduce him to Leachman, which gave him a buzz (she ignored his cigar). And, from the Ackroyd party, EMI'scelebrated tenor John McDermott, on bothknees, whispered all the verses of Danny Boyinto her ear. (EC: He, who will emcee nextyear's Junos?) Also from the Ackroyd party,Mr. X -Ray checked out all the excitement onthe main floor, and was last seen roaring downYonge Street on his hog. (EC: Bigger thanyour hog . . . ?) Centro owners, generalmanager Tony Longo and Chef Marc Thuetwere obviously very satisfied with one of thebest nights they have experienced. It's Rob 'N Audie ! We were right lastweek, well almost. It's the whole Edmontonmorning team that's taking over the same slotat Toronto's Mix 99.9. Rob is Rob Christieand Audie is Audie Lynds. They've been thebig Edmonton morning team, and other timeslot turn-ons, for several years, individually

and as a team. They did it first as a team atCHED and then at Power 92. Now we'll seeif JJ Johnston has as good an ear for on -airtalent as he has an eye for promotion. He's laidhis balls on the line for this one. (EC: Why notAudie 'Al Rob . . . ?)

Sharp-eyed Cabereau . . . VickyGabereau, that saint from Mother Corp, spotteda review in RPM recently on Faye Kellerstein' sA Feygele Zingt. She was actually attracted toa next-door review on Colin James, herfavourite singer. much to offer, and particularly when youngpeople enjoy their music as much as old.

"Don't Eric Clapton and Rod Stewartfans have rights to hear these artists. If peopledon't want to buy the latest Clapton or RodStewart because it's crap, they don't buy it.

"Young people today are just as excitedabout The Doors, as young people in the '60swere. Maybe it's because the music was sopassionate, so meaningful. I'm not sayingtoday's music isn't, but I guess very little ofit is meaningful enough to hold their attention."

And as Stevens admits, the warm andcozy attitude towards classic rock hasn't beenrestricted to radio.

"Even newspapers and television gotvery interested when The Rolling Stones werein town. Mick Jagger buys a toothpick atCanadian Tire and it's news. Look at thehoopla over Woodstock as compared toLollapalooza. It's not just radio, it's everyone, because everyone's more interested in whatthey know than what they don't know."

J.J. Johnston doesn't buy the argumentthat his station doesn't support new talent.

"They're pissed offbecause we're not goingto break the new artist

for them. Well, that's whyCFNY's here. There's a

station that's trying to doit, and look what's

happening to them."J.J. Johnston

And he says that most of the FM stations in thecity support new records.

"We're are essentially a new musicstation, if you look at our percentage ofcurrents. And I believe, and I can't speak forthem, that CHUM -FM is almost all currentnow. But that doesn't seem to please recordcompanies, because they're not playing what

"They're pissed off because we're notgoing to break the new artist for them. Well, that's why CFNY's here. There's a stationthat's trying to do it, and look what's happeningto them."

Familiarity breeds contempt. That's howthe phrase goes. But for the radio industry,

"A lot of stations arefollowing that familiar -is -

not to sell records."Gene Stevens

Z97.3FM

familiarity breeds advertisers. How else canyou explain why so many stations are playingclassic hits along with currents, while othersare vaulting headfirst into the gold formatentirely.

Radio is an ever changing, ever evolvingcreature. It responds to every whim or whisperin the music mainstream, in its ever continuingquest to feed the masses. It's much like the oldsaying that when a butterfly in China flaps itswings, the weather changes in Europe.Somewhere, somehow, classic rock crept backinto the mainstream, and it shows little sign ofleaving.

"The majority of consumers are olderthan they used to be, and people in their 30'sand 40's prefer the familiarity of the past,"says Stevens. "That's what they listen to theradio for - entertainment, companionship andfamiliarity. They don't want challenges, theydon't want some surprise thrown at them.

"A lot of stations are following thatfamiliar -is -comfortable routine, because thebusiness we're in is to build an audience, notto sell records."

Still roaring. For the third week, EltonJohn's Can You Feel The Love Tongiht is the#1 song in Canada. The song has support rightacross the country. It is #1 from CJCB Sydneyto Energy 1200 Ottawa to CFAX Victoria. Ithas also kept The Lion King Soundtrack on topof the Albums chart for a third week.

What about Tarzan? Barenaked Ladiescracks the Hit Tracks chart with the top add.Jane, the first release from the band's newalbum, debuts at #61. Songs about womenhave produced many #1 songs. Namesbeginning with the letter A lead the way withthree. Name them.

Gracias amigo! The top album entry lastweek was from none other than Gipsy Kings. The band's Greatest Hits album debuted at#30. It continues to sell mucho copies andbullets all the way to #21.

Great Cancan. Two of the three albumsentering the chart are Canadian acts. Sloanleads the way. The group's Twice Removeddebuts at #31. Going from one coast to another,Jann Arden is other homegrown artist whosealbum is beginning to catch on at retail. LivingUnder June enters at #63.

What a great idea! I'm surprised Ihaven't heard of a radio station doing an allbaseball strike weekend. The timing is perfect. The possibilities are endless! Just from the HitTracks chart you could play Throwin' It AllAway, Crying Shame, Change Your Mind,Sadness Grows, Bad Timing, Time Of TheSeason, Scanning These Crowds, I Believe,High Hopes, Longing In Their Hearts andanything by Ace Of Third Base.

The retail buzz. At the Sam's store onBayer's Road in Halifax, David Boyle reportsfour of the top 10 best-selling albums are fromCanadian acts. Here is the complete list.1. Sloan 2. Counting Crows 3. The RollingStones 4. A11 -4 -One 5. The Lion KingSoundtrack 6. Ace Of Base 7. Forrest GumpSoundtrack 8. Jann Arden 9. Celine Dion10. Blue Rodeo.

Straight A'S. Andrea and Athena didn'tquite make it, but three did. The songs with awomen's name beginning with the letter A tohit #1 are Angie (The Rolling Stones - 1973),Amanda (Boston - 1986) and Angel ia (RichardMarx - 1989).

optimism in musicseems to be a lost cause, the rare artist thatdoes aspire to newer heights is accordedmomentous praise and adulation.

Toronto's Our Lady Peace is a rare breedin this wait -and -see business. Despite neverhaving played the usual diet of clubs and smalltown bars, the band was signed to Sony MusicCanada virtually on the spot, testament to theoriginality of its sound and its message.

Lead singer and lyricist Raine Maida isthe architect of Our Lady Peace's uniquevision. According to Maida, the essence of theband's music is in its darkly optimisticatmosphere, which in a roundabout way washow the name Our Lady Peace surfaced.

"It came from a poem I just kind ofhappened on. A man named Mark Van Dorenfrom Illinois wrote this poem back in 1943.It's not a real lengthy poem, but it had thatelement of dark optimism in it, and that's howpeople describe my lyrics."

Maida was a criminology student at theUniversity of Toronto when he and longtimefriend Mike Turner decided to put the piecestogether for a band. He says that time becamevery compacted, trying to form a band whileat the same time trying to earn his degree.

"It was difficult because I was justfinishing university, I think we signed the dealthe last day of exams. I think I wrote my lastexam May 3, and we started pre -production onthe album May 25."

Unlike virtually ever other Canadianartist trying to find a label, Our Lady Peaceavoided the bar and club scene, instead focusingon the music. A four -song demo was shippedout to various labels in Canada and the US,and Sony jumped up and paid attention rightaway.

"The next thing we knew, Rick Camilleri,Richard Zuckmerman and Mike Roth were allat our rehearsal place. So we sat down, playing our four songs, talked for an hour anda half, and more or less signed the deal rightthere."

Our Lady Peace is comprised of Maida,Turner (guitars), Chris Eacrett (bass) andJeremy Taggart (drums). Maida believes theindividual influences of each member haveadded a multi -dimensional element to theband.

"When Mike and I first met Jeremy, hewas really into jazz, so all his playing wasreally jazz -influenced. We had to take hisplaying a little towards ours, because it wasdefinitely left of centre. At the same time, thediversity of his playing has added so much tothe band."

The diversity of influences range fromMaida's fondness for East Indian artist SheilaChandra and Sinead O'Connor, to Eacrett'sappreciation for the likes Rage Against TheMachine, Living Colour and Sting. And Turnergrew up in England during the punkphenomenon, citing influences such as TheSex Pistols, Boomtown Rats and The Jam.

The man responsible for putting togetherthe final picture was producer Arnold Lanni, who met the crew while they recorded inLanni's Toronto studio.

RPM CHART WEEKLY - Monday August 22, 1994 - 7

"Arnold's got sort of a semi -privatestudio which he gave us &good rate on. He waslistening in one day, we sat down and talked, and he like what we were doing. It started onjust a personal level with him and I, andthrough the relationship the music came out. He's a really brilliant man, with so much tooffer to our music."

When asked about the phrase darkoptimism being applied to his music, Maidafelt that too much of the grunge/alternativesound today was centred on anger, an angerwithout purpose.

"A lot of rock n' roll today is prettyangry. Our music definitely has an aggression, and a sarcasm, but if you look deeply into thelyrics there's a positive side, an optimism, andit was important for us to get that across.

"There's nothing wrong with being angry,as long as it's directed or focused in some way. It's hard to be objective when you're writinglyrics and being political. I think that's whathappens to a lot of these bands, they don'tbecome analytical."

Naveed, Our Lady Peace's debut album,is a fiercely independent release. Rangingfrom suppressed psychedelia to ferociousgrunge-esque guitar rock, the album pulls thelistener in from the first chords. But repeatedlistenings unmask the true value of this record.

Naveed is an ancient middle easternname for a bearer of good news. Maida hastransposed that idea into the band's music, using it as a metaphor for the quest forknowledge and spiritual growth. When askedwhat knowledge Naveed has gained thus far,Maida went back to the importance ofobjectivity in artistic development.

"The whole thing with Naveed is theduality in his personality. I think the hardestthing in life is to maintain objectivity inwhatever you're doing. It's probably somethingwe take for granted. But I try to apply iteveryday, and make sure I'm not making fastdecisions . "

The band continues to tour across Canada, wrapping up a series of dates with I MotherEarth. Maida indicates he and his band can'twait for some time off, to resume writing.

"Everyone in the band is really anxiousto see what happens when we finally get sometime off to write. That's not to say we rushedthe last record, but I think with a little moretime, all the influences are going to come outeven more."

The name game has finally ended withInteractive -Ware. With MMS claiming rightsto Inter -activity and consumer and commercialrelations putting a damper on Active -Warewith a 1992 registration of the identical name.It took a few searches before Interactive -Warewas finally registered. Small business is a lotof work.

A special thanks to Al Fletcher fromWarner Music Canada and Brian Wallacefrom MCA Canada, who are making that extraeffort to keep this column informative.

Interactive where! With all the print inthe dailies and the trades on interactivesoftware, you would expect to see the front ofevery software retailer's window and displaycounter flashing the new product. Not! Onetrip to the Walden Galleria in Buffalo left thiswriter cold with the lack of information andavailability of the various titles you hear somuch about. The Galleria has four differentcomputer software outlets and none of themhad a separate interactive section. Oneparticular store was unaware of what titlesthey had available and was guessing whichproducts could have interactive qualities. Threeof the four stores carried only one interactiverelease and that was Prince. They were allaware of the Peter Gabriel release but didn'tcarry it in their stores. Where is the Bowie,Penthouse and other titles you read abouteveryday in the dailies? I think these retailerscould learn a few marketing tactics from themusic industry, particularly front -racking andin-store displays.

FAO SCHWARZ in the heart of New Yorkcity has a definite hold on the interactivepotential. In the midst of an undeterminableamount of Super NES software, hardwareproducts, toys and more toys was a sizeablesectioned -off area filled with interactivereleases. Three large television sets werehooked up to various interactive hardwarecomponents. Each had a different interactivetitle to play and there were three line-ups ofpeople waiting to get on board to give them atry. Along the side of this interactiveplayground was an enclosed glass cabinetfilled with interactive games, more titles thanone could imagine. It's only a matter of timebefore that kind of marketing strategy reachesour super -stores.

On-line in - retailers out? Thatquestion must have crossed every record exec'smind in the last few months. The August 2edition of The Vancouver Sun had an interestingitem on the popularity of the new and up-coming on-line services. It doesn't matterwhat Cyber . . . on-line service you subscribeto, you can't take your computer to the beachor in your car. Sure you can tape new and oldproduct from your home computer, but youcan also tape from your television and yourstereo and your pre-recorded releases. Hometaping has always been a problem in the musicindustry, but if you look at it from a moreoptimistic point of view, look at all the exposurethe artist is garnering. Millions of people arehooked on these on-line services. There's agood percentage of those millions who are notgoing to be satisfied with a chopped up hometaped version of their favourite artists and aregoing to go to the retailer and buy the newrelease that they discovered on their PC orMac. If everyone was to tape all their favouritesongs and never buy music from records

stores, than the record companies would havebeen obsolete with the introduction of theradio. Progress is suppose to be a good thing!!

Robin Leach on CD-ROM? Well it'strue. An article in the Toronto Computesmagazine, cites the popularity of CD-ROMbooks. Publishers are jumping on thebandwagon and are publishing their work onCD-ROM. Even the Lifestyles Of The RichAnd Famous has a title available withphotographs, biographies and even recipesfrom celebrities, at your beck and call.

Interactive -Ware . (The Editorial TourGuide Along The Information Highway) goesacross North America with it's first all -glossyfour colour consumer -oriented magazine thefirst week in October. The magazine's mandateis to bring the computer -illiterate on-line, andintroduce them to the new interactive releasesavailable in a computer friendly manner. Withthe bevy of new releases and the mainstreamaudience the manufacturers are trying to reach,a vehicle to inform both the computer wiz andthe unsuspecting consumer is a well-roundedsolution. The first issue will feature newinteractive releases and the marketing strategiesbehind them, specifically product aimed at thepeople who may not have a computer and howthey are going to be brought on board.Interviews with notable interactive pioneerswill be included in the feature story, includinginsight from Mega Interactive Ltd. presidentand organizer of the six -acre Surreal Field atWoodstock '94, Danny Socolof. RHEOSTATICS

Introducing HappinessSireiWarner Bros. -45670-PFrom the files of the wild and wacky, comes thisalbum that should pose an entertaining problemfor radio programmers. There's no doubt aboutthis band's talent, or the strength of this album. But programmers will find difficulty in siftingthrough the 18 tracks and finding more than onethat would fit their format, which isn't a badthing. It's a testament to the remarkable diversityof this sprawling collection of tunes. The music

ranges from inspired to invigorating to downrightsilly, but it's all definitely very interesting. What'sparticularly attractive about this band is theprofoundly Canadiana aspect of the music. Check

out the lyrics to the aptly -titled Me And Stupid,"Me and Stupid at the cottage, casting out forgiant trout. Me and Stupid threw back sunfish,

digging worms and lightning punks." Anyonewho grew up in southern Ontario and hit thecottage on summer weekends knows what that'sall about. Rheostatics know where they comefrom, and the quality of the music is evidence of

that. Produced by Michael -Philip Wojewoda.FIR

LEE AARON -RockEmotional RainA&M-78871-11Anyone who's seen Aaron's Metal Queen video, perhaps the ultimate in cheese, has probablydismissed her as another small-time performerwho could never possibly do anything worthremembering. But that would be far to hasty ajudgement, as Aaron has a great deal more tooffer than just bad metal videos. It may surprisesome to discover that this is Aaron's seventhalbum, which says something about her strengthand versatility as an artist. It's been three yearssince her last record, Some Girls Do, which reallypushed Aaron into the mainstream and gave hera new fan base she'd never known. This newalbum promises to deliver that fan base, andpossibly create an entirely new one. As she'smatured, Aaron has been able to gain a greater

personal insight and objectivity, thus lendingfiner credence to her songwriting. The music stillrocks, and often rocks hard, hut it's tempered bya strong lyrical consciousness that gives hermusic some much -needed integrity. Being with anew label, Aaron was able to gain even greaterpersonal control over the album, recruitingguitarists Knox Chandler (Psychedelic Fursl andReeves Gabrels (Tin Machine, David Bowie),along with Sons Of Freedom rhythm section DonBinns (bass) and Don Short (drums). In short,Aaron is finally making the music she wants tomake, and it's definitely a step in the rightdirection. Highlight tracks include the lead single,Odds Of Love, Baby Go Round, Raggedy Jane and

Waterfall. Produced by Mark Berry and JohnAlbani. -RR

NEIL YOUNG AND CRAZY HORSE -Rock

Sleeps With AngelsReprise -45749-PAs rock stars go, Neil Young has always been theantithesis of the whole thing. Rarely doinginterviews, putting down everything and anythingto do with the commercial side of the business,Young is first and foremost an artist, and anoccasionally angry one at that. Young's lastalbum, Harvest Moon, seemed to be a reckoningwith his past, a slow train back to the days of

Harvest and After The Goldrush. This latesteffort sees Young still holding onto those ties tothe past, while not passing up on his current linkwith the grunge-alternative crowd of today. Thealbum begins and ends with a pair of similar -sounding piano -tinged songs, My Heart and ADream That Can Last, which seem to echo thework Young did on the Philadelphia soundtrack.Mixed in in between are vestiges of his older era(Change Your Mind, the title track, WesternHero) and symbols of the more modern socialstrata (Piece Of Crap, Blue Eden, Safeway Cart). This is the 35th album in Young's long career(when you throw in his work with BuffaloSpringfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash). Recordedat Complex Studios in Los Angeles, and produced

by Young and David Briggs. -RR

ROGER DALTREY -RockA Celebration: The Music Of PeteTownshend And The WhoContinuum Records -19402-JIt seems rather ironic that a band and singer bestknown for that voice -of -a -generation phrase"Hope I die before I get old" are still pumping outthe same tunes so many years later. The Who haslived and died more deaths than Paul McCartney, but there's no denying the impact of the band'smusic. At its peak, The Who was the hardestrock n' roll band there has ever been, and Daltreywas the hardest rock n' roll singer. The numberof singers who could maybe match Daltrey'spipes on tunes like Love Reign O'er Me or Won'tGet Fooled Again is probably minute. The factthat he's still able to sing at all today is perhapsa testament to how well he's kept himself inshape over the years. The pipes still hold up onthis 12 -track album, recorded live at CarnegieHall, featuring many classic Who songs. Theband is solid, particularly veteran session drummer

Simon Phillips, who keeps every song rollingwith his two-fisted snare drum slams. Thedifference in this production is the backing of theJulliard Orchestra, conducted by movie musicmaven Michael Kamen (Robin Flood, LethalWeapon). The addition of the orchestra givessome tunes an overloaded audacity (PinballWizard), others an imperialistic profundity (Won'tGet Fooled Again, 5:151. Of course, old matesJohn Entwistle and Pete Townshend show up fora couple of guest shots, as do The Chieftains andDavid Sanborn (?). A curio for rock fans and amust for Who fans. -RR

PAULA COLE -Pop

HarbingerImago -21018-NThe title really does say it all. It seems thatrecording artists and record companies may bestarting to get the message. Music isn't aboutfollowing trends. It isn't saying "Well they soundjust like so-and-so, let's sign them." It's aboutoriginality and inspiration. It's about makingmusic that appeals to the heart, and touches anerve. When A&R reps and radio programmersare able to look past the obvious and the ordinaryand find things new and different, then they'redoing a great service to us all. Paula Cole saysthat "Music should be like a ride that takes youdown a river", and her music fulfills that requestcompletely. Each of the 14 songs has an integrityand a consciousness of its own. And each track

is uniquely thought -provoking and inspiring. Thefact that Peter Gabriel has sought out to Cole toopen on the European leg of his tour is proofenough of the importance of this new talent.Tracks worth noting include Happy Home,Bethlehem, Our Revenge, She Can't Feel Anything

Anymore and Ordinary. A message worth savoringfrom an artist worth hearing. -RR

REBECKA TURNOVIST -PopA Night Like ThisEMI.27786-FWhat's with Sweden? First it was ABBA, thenRosette, now Ace Of Base. The number of musicalexports from Sweden may be few and farbetween, but when they hit, they hit with ahammer. Tornqvist, a native of Uppsala (justnorth of Stockholm) may not be the next greatScandanavian star, but she is worth payingattention to all the same. The music is born fromthe artist's love of jazz and blues, which shelistened to growing up in Kenya (of all places).Combined with the subtle pop sensibilities a laSide or Basia, the result is a quietly melodicwork that has already garnered critical andcommercial success in Sweden, and is looking to

make the all-important European breakthrough. While some of the tracks are Tornqvist originals, such as Wander Where You Wander or Easy Come

Easy Go, others are new turns on jazz standardssuch as Here's That Rainy Day and Angel Eyes.An album that should be played in the dark, anddefinitely not when you're alone. -RR

DAVID NORRIS-ELYEMist Over Juan De FucaTowne -0070Norris-Elye describes the music here as "a crosssection of electrolacoustic instrumental and vocalmusic," which gives it a rather awkward, yetinteresting classification. A master musician, with more than 30 years of live and recordedperformances to his credit, Norris-Elye furtherexplains that the production is an acoustic guitarbased project. The material was written on guitar. All the other instruments were then added. Norris-Elye played about 70% of the instruments. There

-Pop

is a pseudo -surrealism in Norris-Elye's approachto his music, which allows for creative workslike this to be considered contemporary poplartmusic. The works are refreshing and venturesome

which should gain an audience, particularly withother musicians. Although hinging on tedium, there are moments of sheer abandonment ofstyle where a breath of freedom interrupts, particularly on Skating On A Pond, and IgnaceTurnaround. But don't overlook the very reflectiveOld England. Norris-Elye has also cleverlyintegrated the exquisite vocal talent of De DeHiggins (Springtime Symphony), Marie Bottrell(Neon Skies), Gisele Fredette (Flowerpot Island),

Yohanna Vanderkley (Hanging By A Thread), andColette Baron (Step By Step), all key tracks. Allthe music was produced and mixed by Norris-Elye at his home studio, with the exception ofFogged In Victoria and The Wedding Song, whichhe produced with David Saslove at ThornburySound, and Hanging By A Thread, which wasengineered by Berge Alyanak and mixed by Norris-Elye and Vezi Tayyeb at Kensington Sound. Lyricswere written by the individual vocalists. Availablethrough 1-800-J0E RADIO.

Generation 6 PackRepris e -45747-PFrom the 'what do you make of this cover' file, comes this interesting little quintet fromVancouver, who recently signed on with Reprisein the US. The packaging looks like a mish-mashof old family photos (we're not sure), but again, don't judge the music by the bizarre artwork. These guys are good. The music is sort ofalternative -tinged guitar rock, with a lyricalcontent that speaks volumes about the angst -ridden generation X crowd. "Give me somethingI can hold onto, and I'll stop shootin' at you. Tellme stories about my future, and I'll stop shootin'at you." A perfect companion to Beck's "I'm aloser baby, so why don't you kill me." Warnerbelieves this crew could fill in some of the emptyspaces in Canada's alternative market, andthey're probably right. The sound is occasionallyoff-the-wall, but everyone once in a while themusic really catches your ear and makes you situp and listen. Recorded, according to the linernotes, "at a number of places!!! Including Mark'sbedroom and Todd's apartment." You've got tolove it. -RR

PRINCE -PopCome

Warner Bros. -45700-PThe album graphics actually say Prince 1958-1993, accompanied by a picture of his purplenessstanding in front of a graveyard, which is aknock -you -over -the -head way of saying thatPrince has ceased to exist, soon to be replacedby ... that symbol thing? Regardless of what hedecides to call himself, there can be no doubt asto this man's ability to make music. Let's face it,when it comes to funk, he is the absolute funkiest. The music on this particular album doesn't ventureinto the unmarked realms of such earlier worksas Sign 0' The Times, nor does it pretend to bea good pop record, like Purple Rain or DiamondsAnd Pearls. This is just straight, down and dirtyfunk, the kind of record your mama alwayswarned you about. Afterall, when Prince keepstelling you to Come, he isn't asking you to moveyour feet. Some of the songs actually divergeinto areas other than sex. Papa, for example, isa powerful little number about the horrors ofabuse. But when Prince is at he's best, it's whenhe's at his baddest. The last song is called

Orgasm you figure it out. -RR

Major's chart successhas led to his nationwide acceptance by theindustry. Jim Witter and Cassandra Vasikhave the biggest gainer of the week with

Human Highway, their duet released by Sony. This is a Neil Young penning, included onBorrowed Tunes - A tribute to Young. Part ofthe monies raised through mechanical andperformance royalties will go to Safehaven, aCanadian charity. Here's a little interestingtid-bit about Cassandra Vasik. She won theCountry Roads talent contest as CassandraLee, back in 1981.

Tracy Byrd kicks in with the most addedsingle this week. Watermelon Crawl, thelatest release from No Ordinary Man, hisMCA album, enters the chart at #79.

ROSEMARY SCHMIDTStraight From The HeartRosemary Schmidt labelChristianlgospel music has an immense marketof its own through a network of distributors thatmakes mainstream product sales pale in

comparison. More than a few recording starshoned their talent on Christian music first, and, with a slight variance in the message content, became successful in the mainstream market.Schmidt's voice training includedmusical theatre, which is fairly obvious with this release. She hasadapted a penetrating vocal projection and amatter-of-fact assault on the lyric content thatleaves no doubt that she is in command. Nomatter how cutting the vocals however, there isan overall confidence that oozes with warmththat adds to the importance of the message. Keyhere is the Babbie Mason penning of It Must BeLove, her own original of Keep On Tryin', andCircle Of Love, written by Tish McSorley andadapted by Schmidt. Music arrangements by DanCutrona are exceptional, particularly on JulieMiller's writing of Forever Friends. Produced byCarmen Barry and recorded at EmmanuelProductions in Scarborough (Toronto). With suchan extraordinarly beautiful vocal talent, Schmidtshould make more overtures to the crossovermarket. - WG
