I began my journey in 1996 to become a nurse; andfound my passion in geriatrics and long-term care. Iwas an LPN for 11 years before I went back to schoolfor my associate degree in nursing. I took the gutwrenching state board test in February 2010 and willnever forget the day I learned that I had passed. I wasfinally an RN! As a single mom at the time, mydaughters sacrificed “mommy time” but also saw myhard work and determination pay off in the end. Notsatisfied, I went back to school and received mybachelor’s degree in nursing in July 2013. I spent 15years of my nursing career in long-term care and thentried working in a local hospital for a year, but I knewsomething was missing. I am thrilled to be backworking in long-term care as Director of Nursing atWestminster Village. This is a truly wonderfulcommunity and I feel blessed to work with such a greatgroup of individuals. —Melissa Clendenning

Technology for theSenior Population
Technology can be used to gain accessto the Internet’s wealth of informationand also to stay connected to others.Younger generations are no longer theonly ones using online resources toenhance their connectivity to the world.Residents of senior living communitiesalso benefit from technology; and expertsreport that digital tools are gainingpopularity among older adults.
Advances in this technology make iteasier for seniors to continue to learn asthey age. Older adults can use theInternet to remain up-to-date onbreaking news and stay engaged incurrent events of interest to them. Withrobust search engines like Google andmultiple platform options, such as acomputer, tablet or smartphone, seniorscan choose how they access information.
The ability to connect and stayin touch with family and friendsacross the globe has also helpedsurge technology to the forefrontof senior interests. Seeking out oldfriends, connecting with newacquaintances and findingsupport through social networksare gaining in popularity with thesenior audience.
Westminster Village is doing itspart to lead the way in technologybased enrichment activities byoffering a new class for residents.Through a partnership with aPennsylvania-based technologycompany, residents will now haveaccess to “how-to” classes focusedon the use of an iPad, a populartablet manufactured by Apple. Theclasses have been designedspecifically for continuing careretirement communities.
During the series, residents willlearn the basics of operating thisnewer generation of technologyand dive into the intricacies andbenefits of the iPad itself. At theend of the five-week course, classparticipants will understand howto email directly from the device, search the Internet, add contacts, edit documents, and much more. After the conclusion of the series,Westminster Village will continueto share additional content on amonthly basis to keep residentscurrent on applications thatwould be useful in daily life.
The class is currently beingtested with a pilot group. Soon, itwill be available to all residents.Watch for more information incoming months.
