God Bless America - Land That I Love+ F R . T O M G L Y N N
o f b l e s s e d m e m o r y
appy Fourth of July! I hope it will be a safe dayof celebration for everyone as we remember the
237th anniversary of the Independence of the
United States. This past week I got tothinking of my past Fourth of July
celebrations. Maybe some of you re-
member that the celebration of thisday was simpler in simpler times. Pic-
nics and cookouts held in our back-
yards. Fireworks, always illegal, were
set off in alleys and empty lots. Doyou remember how cars decorated
with American flags and red, white,
and blue bunting drove down thestreet? This is not done very often
now. To see fireworks we have to join
a million and more people at the lake-
shore. Showing our American patriot-ism is a bit more complicated now.
I thought of this as I waited for
a traffic light the other day. I saw a
church bulletin board with this simpleannouncement: Pray for our Troops!
If anything, this should be primary in
our minds. Nearly every day we hearof several of our military personnel
who die in the Middle East. Moreover, some are bru-
tally murdered. In our Divine Liturgies, we have severalpetitions for our nation, our government, and those in
the military service. At St. Josephs we add especially
those serving in dangerous parts of the world. We re-
member those who are putting their lives on the linethe flags we display today.
A question to ask ourselves is this: how do
live our lives as Catholics and as locitizens of our nation? This ques
has puzzled the Church from its be
ning. There is a heading in my Bin the First Epistle of St. Peter-
Christian in a hostile world. The
ciety within which we live is ind
hostile to what we profess ourselvebe. Oh, we hear pieties from man
our leaders and politicians. Howe
there is a gap between what theypromising and what they are do
Recent studies, such as those from
sociologist Fr. Andrew Greeley, sh
that there is a subtle growth of aCatholicism growing in our society
Our calling is to be good citizens
to make a difference in our coun
Today we celebrate a system of gernment that should enable us to liv
this nation in some degree of jus
and harmony. We can dedicate selves to being peacemakers in
own community, especially whenever a sign of hosti
tension, and suspicion arise. So today, let us celebthis holiday with deep gratitude for being so fortunat
live in the United States. We are a rich and blessed p
ple.
Creator of the Universe, You fashioned us in YourImage and likeness. You placed us at the crown ofYour creation and gifted us with freedom so that wemay willingly do Your holy will for our happiness.
You blessed our nation with liberty. Free us from allsin and evil, O Lord, that we may always live in peace
and sing the praises of Your glory for ever

Then he lay down upon his couch, and the assassins stabbed him withtheir lances, and also killed someof Boryss servants. WrappingBorys in a cloth, they threw himonto a wagon and drove off withhim. When Sviatopolk saw that he
was still breathing, he sent somemen to finish him off with swords.St Borys received the crown ofmartyrdom in 1015. He and hisbrother Hlib became known asPassion-Bearers, since they did notresist evil with violence.

The first Sunday of July this year is the traditioUkrainian summer festival of Ivana Kupala wh
originally dates back to as far as the 4th century BWhile originally a pan-slavic pagan fertility ritual, Ukrainian Church has Christianized the custom ithe feast of St. John the Baptist, whose Nativity wcommemorated yesterday. According to Christcustom, the priest brings herbs and flowers into church to be blessed. Unmarried girls would thbraid the flowers into a wreath and throw them ithe river, in hopes that their future husband would fit and the blessings associated with it. Married womwould scatter the blessed herbs in their fields symb
izing the earth's new-found fertility following the cwinter and wet spring, and pray in thanks to tMother of God and St. Elizabeth. Kupalo also includplayful baths in lakes and rivers, a symbol of the that comes with St. John's baptism, and jump ofires as a sign of further purification. Religious-themfolk songs always accompanied the Kupalo festivitimost of which weave between biblical references alocal folk customs associated with the harvest afamily life.
