!"#$%&'$()$*"#$+,-.,/0#1$$As we celebrate Palm Sunday and anticipate Easter Joy, we

continue our Lenten journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Wherever we find ourselves in our good intentions for Lent this week, we realize the time is drawing near to prepare for the Risen Christ. Throughout the Lenten season, we are reminded that as Christ did for us so we must do for others in return. The second reading for this week’s liturgy from Philippians speaks of putting aside our human tendency of selfishness and instead act more Christ-like to humbly regard others as more important than ourselves. We are not alone on this journey and St. Mary invites us to approach this seemingly daunting task with wonderful resources. One of the gifts offered by our parish was the recent retreat lead by Fr. David Hemann of Holy Cross parish, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Due to an incoming winter storm, Fr. David was only able to share part of his message about the Universal Call to Holiness - What does it mean to be Holy? If you were able to attend Fr. David’s opening session and were open to his message, you would have heard the first step to Holiness is Humility – as we heard again in today’s scripture. His music and personal stories were truly inspiring! He will return to St. Mary on Sunday, April 15th to share more on this theme. Our family has marked the calendar to attend for many reasons, and we encourage you to also ‘Save the Date’ much as you would any other important, not to be missed event. Our family knows our own tendency to be tempted to pass on events that are not required by work or school. But our experiences with Generations of Faith over the years, our high school age boys’ preparation and participation with NCYC, and ongoing Confirmation classes have brought us to a deeper understanding of knowing and accepting that we are not able to authentically live out our faith on just our own will. Following our call to holiness, we need the support of our church community to keep our hearts focused on God. We can all strive to follow the examples of our fellow parishioners, church staff, and pastors who share the same journey together of unity and humility. May your preparation for the coming Easter Joy renew and strengthen the spirit within you!

Albert Einstein had to speak at an important science conference. On his way over, he told his driver, “I’m sick of all these conferences. I always say the same things!” His driver, who resembled Einstein, said, “I know. I’ve had to attend them all. I know nothing about

science, but could give the conference in your place.”

They decide to switch places for the night with Einstein sitting in the audience. A scientist, wanting to impress everyone, asks a very difficult question hoping Einstein won’t be able to answer.

The driver looks at the scientist & says, “Sir, your question is so easy that I’m going to let my driver reply to it for me.”

Changes Coming for

Faith Formation! This year, the Faith Formation Commission and staff have been hard at work assessing our current ministries and planning for our future. Our offerings will be changing next year. Here's what you can expect: Generations of Faith will end. Although we will still strive to offer faith formation to all ages. Preschool - 4th Grade will slowly be switching over to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which is a hands-on method of faith formation based on the Montessori method, over the next few years.

2018/19 will look something like this:

Ages 3-6: All will participate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS).

Ages 6-9: Parents have a choice of CGS or a traditional faith formation program (using the textbooks we used this year at GOF).

Ages 9 - 10: All will participate in a traditional faith formation program.

Grades Preschool - 4th will come 3 times a month, either on a Wed or Sunday. Times will vary.

Grades 5-8 will be meeting twice a month for Edge youth ministry nights instead of once a month.

Grades 9-12 will include monthly youth ministry opportunities, trips to NCYC, summer camps, and Confirmation prep for grades 10-11.

Adults will have a speaker series. It is accessible to all adults and a small group ministry. We are still

developing this. We see much time, effort, and

resources being put into adult ministry that

engages each adult parishioner and assists them in

their journey of growing in faith and

understanding. We will gather all together for 2 intergenerational learning evenings per year, one in Advent and one in Lent. These will include interactive lessons, prayers, and service opportunities for all ages.

We are looking forward to the coming year and the steps we’ll be taking to make our programs more inviting and accessible to parishioners of all ages. Please pray with us for a smooth implementation and a fruitful year.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd…

It is with much excitement St Mary will start Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) for our children ages 3-10yrs in the 2018/19 school year! In the CGS method of faith formation, children learn in a specially prepared room called the Atrium. This is a sacred, “hands on” space where catechists & children hear, ponder & celebrate the most essential mysteries of our faith as revealed in Sacred Scripture & Liturgy.

We are in need of 4-6 adults willing to go through training. Catechist training consists of learning how to proclaim God’s Word & aspects of the Mass to children; how to make materials children can use to think & reflect on the stories & teachings that are proclaimed. It leads adults into a deeper, more joyful, more complete relationship with God & understanding of their Catholic faith.

Please prayerfully ask if this program is something you are being called to. A successful CGS catechist can be male or female, young or old. A background as a teacher or parent is not needed!

The 80 hrs of training is broken up into manageable pieces. St Mary covers the cost of training, mileage, & lodging. Contact Michelle for more info, [email protected] or #319-352-2493 X17
