Head Teachers Message Dear Parents/Carers What a week of wet weather! Assembly on Monday was themed Autumnso I feel it was my fault! Anyway, it hasn't stopped the enthusiastic learning that is going on in all the classrooms. The children have all settled well and are beginning to establish new routines and understand the expectations of their year group. We warmly welcome parent helpers into school, so if you have any free time to support with hearing readers or various activities please speak to your class teacher. This week I met with Paul Wagstaff, Director of Education and Skills for West Sussex. The main aims were to ask for clarification on Infant funding and the opportunity to discuss needs at Springfield and other infant schools. Although supportive, there is no extra funding. He is however taking forward a proposal to WSCC. Our budgets remain tight but we always continue to make sure that all our children's needs are met. Today we had a successful fire practice where the whole school evacuated the building in under 3 minutes. All the children were quiet and sensible and understood the importance of the drill. On Wednesday 9th October between 9 - 10am I have a Headteachers surgery. If you would like to meet with me during that time, please report to the school office. It will be a first come first served appointment system and I am happy to discuss or chat about any- thing in relation to Springfield. I hope you have a good weekend. Head Teacher’s Message

Dear Parents/Carers

What a week of wet weather! Assembly on Monday was themed ‘Autumn’ so I feel it was my fault!

It will be a first come first served appointment system and I am happy to discuss or chat about any-thing in relation to Springfield.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Beat the Street Congratulations to all the children, parents and staff that participated in this competition - Springfield finished 20th! The amount we walked collectively was 7,215 miles which is the equivalent of walking from Worthing to Venice!! Hopefully the game will be on again next year and we can walk even further!

Water and fruit Just a reminder that we provide fruit and water at all times during the day for children to access. Unless you have a medical reason why you can not have these then there is no reason to bring anything else into school. We encourage healthy eating and would like the children at Springfield to embrace this.

Children with Medical Needs To support the identification of children in school with medical needs this year we are introducing wristbands. They are to be used as follows. Orange bands indicate if a child has an epi pen. Blue bands, show if a child uses an inhaler. Green bands indicates if a child has food allergies. Red bands highlights if a child has any other medical

needs. The children work with a number of different members of staff during the day and this system has been put in place to ensure that all the children’s needs can be quickly identified. These bands are to stay in school. If your child happens to come home with one on, don’t worry, please make sure they bring it back to school the following day. The First Aid and Medicines in school policies will be sent by email to all parents for your information. These policies, along with many others are also available on the School website.

Read Write Inc. (RWI) Thank you to all the parents that came to our phonics briefing, I am sure you found it interesting and now have a better understanding of how we teach reading and phonics to our children. Hopefully you will have taken away ideas of how you can also support your child at home. If you have any further questions please speak to your class teacher.

Would you like to be a Springfield School Governor? We are looking to recruit parents to join our friendly Governing body in September. If you would like to be involved with the school and would like the opportunity to help shape and guide the progress of Springfield Infant School and Nursery, please contact Mrs Jones in the school office for more information. Closing date 5pm TODAY [email protected]

Piano We encourage children to learn a musical instrument and we are happy for them to take lessons in school during the day. Our piano teacher is Helen Emery. Helen is an experienced music teacher in the area and has worked at various schools and teaches children of all ages and abilities. She is an accomplished pianist and has been musical director for several local amateur dramatic societies. As well as teaching children how to play the piano and oboe, she is also the conductor of the local Rowland Singers choir. If you would like your child to begin piano lessons you can contact Helen by emailing [email protected]

Car Parking in Sackville Road Parking in Sackville Road/Way is still an issue and is causing a lot of anguish and irritation to our local residents especially at drop off and pick up times. Please can I ask all parents of Springfield School and Nursery to be respectful of the residents cars and mindful that they need to access their property at all times. Just last week one of our residents had her red car hit outside her drive and is asking for any witnesses or the person that hit the car to come forward. Please speak to school office if you have any information. If you do see any antisocial parking please contact http://www.operationcrackdown.org and report it. Please can I appeal to all parents to be courteous and considerate of our neighbours when coming to school. Thank you in anticipation.

Waitrose Waitrose run a ‘Community Matters’ scheme which enables customers to nominate charitable and other locally based organisations within the local community to support with fund raising. We were lucky enough to have been selected for the scheme during the month of August. Yesterday we were awarded with a cheque for £264, this is a huge amount that will make a real difference to the School. At Springfield we are hoping to develop our playground and facilities with this generous donation. On behalf of all the staff and children, we would like to say thank you to everyone that contributed.

After School Clubs I am very pleased to announce that we are in the process of assigning two additional providers to our current club portfolio. STEM Kids which is a club that is a mix of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and a Drama group, run by Star Stage and Screen Hub. We are looking to start both clubs in the second half of the Autumn term. As with all our clubs you would need to register independently with the provider. STEM Kids is planned to take place on a Monday in the EYFS Shared Area and Drama on a Wednesday in the Hall. In order for these clubs to be successful they do need to have a minimum requirement of attendees. If they do not attract enough interest then the club/s may not be able to take place. Further details soon to follow!!

There is a PTA meeting on Wed 2nd October at 2pm in school. All welcome.

Last year was another successful fund raising year organised by our PTA. The PTA is an organisation made up of parents and staff that work together to organise events and raise money for much needed school funds. All parents are automatically part of the PTA when their child starts school, however we do need some parents to take on the roles of committee members in order to be able to run events and coordinate everything. Last year our committed Chair, Kate Evans stood down but we are delighted that she remains as Treasurer. We are looking for parents to be part of the committee and in particular take on the Chair and Secretary position. If you are interested and would like more information, please speak to Mrs Wycherley, the school office or Kate Evans.

Without the support of parents and staff to raise extra funds we will not be able to hold fun events and activities and provide the school with much needed extras.
