Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana
Kurukshetra University is a residential multi-
faculty, multi-disciplinary centre of higher learning
in the country. Established in 1956, the university
has the privilege to contribute to the transformation
and progress of the state of Haryana. Presently, the
University comprises of 10 faculties with 47 depart-
ment/institutes on the campus. University of Ku-
rukshetra is well-equipped in terms of infrastructure
for teaching and learning. The campus remain ac-
tive and vibrant throughout the year with multitude
of events such as National Seminar, Conferences,
Workshops, training programs, organized by differ-
ent 47 departments.
Department of Geography, Kurukshetra University
Established in 1967, the Department of Geography
offers M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D programme. It has
strength of about 150 students, with 8 teaching fac-
ulty. Among these 4 are Professors, 1 senior Assis-
tant Professor and three as Assistant Professors. The
department has 3 smart classrooms and one Seminar
Room. It has state of art GIS and remote sensing
laboratory to facilitate studies and research involv-
ing remote sensing techniques particularly pro-
cessing of digital imageries. The department has 10
concurrent license of Erdas Imagine to process Sat-
ellite data (imageries) and 10 concurrent license of
ArcView (GIS) for teaching the geo- spatial data
handling and mapping.
The department offers two theory and two practical
courses of 100 marks each of Remote Sensing and
GIS in the third and fourth semester for the Masters
students.
The department largely carries out research in the
field of agriculture, environmental geography, re-
mote sensing, GIS, fluvial hydrology, disaster man-
agement, climate change and mapping of socio-
spatial data.
These include (i) Generation of Flood and Soil ero-
sion susceptibility Maps, (ii) Estimation of Meteoro-
logical, Hydrological and Agricultural Drought (iii)
Mapping of socio-economic data (iv) land use land
cover, change detection studies of urban areas, (v)
watershed delineation and management studies etc.
which all involve heavy use of GIS technology.
Lodging
The University has two Guest houses, with 50 well
furnished rooms to provide accommodation to Ex-
ternal resource persons/experts who visit the Uni-
versity. The guest house provides accommodation to
participants who visit for various refresher/ orienta-
