All Saints

Next Thursday and Friday we celebrate two very significant days in the Church’s year, ‘All Saints’ and ‘The Commemoration of ALL the Faithful Departed’ (All Souls’ Day). November is a special time for us to give thanks to all the saints who have inspired us to be better people. It is also a time when we pray for the faithful departed so they may rest in peace in eternal life with God.

The Gospel reading for next Thursday is from Matthew 5:1-12

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.

Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them: ‘How happy are the poor in spirit: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy the gentle: they shall have the earth for their heritage. Happy those who mourn: they shall be comforted. Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied. Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them. Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God. Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God. Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.’

Religious Education in the Classroom – Year 6

Term 4 is a very busy time for Year Six. The first Sharing Our Story unit studied is ‘Living and

Sharing in the Mission of Jesus’. This coincides with World Mission Month in October. In this

unit, the students develop an understanding and appreciation of mission, and the call to mission

throughout the world. So far, the students have studied, ‘The Judgement’ (Mt 25:34-40) and

‘The Commissioning of the Disciples’ (Mt 28:16-20). The children will then research people

who, through their words and actions, are committed to the mission of Jesus. Year 6 will then

look at how they can further develop and implement practical ways to continue the mission of

Jesus in our school, the community and globally.

Advent/Christmas is the next unit to be studied. With the students preparing to celebrate the

completion of their Primary school education, this unit provides the opportunity for students to

reflect on their own growth and development, and their hopes and anxieties in commencing

Secondary school.

Reading Matthew (1:1-17), will allow Year Six to study the genealogy of Jesus. The family

tree of Jesus Christ will be identified and the children will reflect on how the love of God has

been with them throughout their Primary school years.

Finally, the students will research, construct and sequence the symbols of the Jesse Tree. This

will allow them to reflect on the symbolism and significance of the celebration of Christmas.
