Welcome
Dear participants,
It is a sweet pleasure to welcome you in Bled, Slovenia, at the 26th International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe. The NENE2017 conference is organised by the Nuclear Society of Slovenia in association with the Jožef Stefan Institute, Reactor Engineering Division.
It is our pleasure to announce that the 26th International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe NENE2017 is under the honorary patronage of His Excellency Mr Borut Pahor, the President of the Republic of Slovenia.
The conference is an annual gathering of professionals from nuclear research and educational institutions, nuclear vendors, utilities and regulatory bodies, with more than quarter of a century long tradition. It attracts participants from all around Europe and worldwide. The broad spectre of topics discussed include reactor physics, severe accidents, thermal hydraulics, nuclear fusion, regulatory issues, education, research reactors, nuclear power plant operation, new reactor technologies, nuclear materials, radiation protection, waste management and probabilistic safety assessment.
This year, the leading theme of the conference is Sustainable Future through Nuclear Energy, Research and Education. The challenges and opportunities for nuclear safety technical support organizations will be highlighted at the round table discussion. Eight invited lecturers will give their insights on the engaging nuclear topics. In addition, 45 oral presentations in 7 plenary and 8 parallel sessions, covering variety of topics, will be complemented by 109 posters presented during the coffee breaks. The traditional contest of young authors will be a great opportunity for the new generation of experts to promote their ideas and work. This year will introduce also a special slam session for young authors. We are very pleased that 35 young authors are participating in the contest. The best posters will also be awarded.
Finally, we hope that you will find the meeting successful and the discussions fruitful.

Conference trip
Guided tour around Lake Bled with summer tobogganing After a long day of just sitting in a confined space, it is delightful to go out, stretch your legs and breathe some fresh air. Therefore, we would like to invite you to a guided tour of Bled and its surroundings. From the shore of Lake Bled, we will enjoy a stunning view on the Bled Island in the middle of the lake and the castle above the lake. From the lakeside, we will then ascend 140 meters to the hill Straža, which offers an even more awe-inspiring view on the lake. For the return trip to the valley, we suggest taking the summer sleds, but one can also, with the proper footwear, walk along the side of the ski slope. We will continue the tour by passing the Vila Bled, one of former Yugoslavian President Tito's residences. We will advance by the rowing centre and from the shore under the castle, return to the hotel. Since no visit of Bled is complete without the Bled cream cake, we will sweeten our tour with this famous dessert along the way. Like any proper guided tour, we will listen to interesting facts about Bled along the way.
Conference dinner
The conference dinner will be held at the Grand Hall of the Grand Hotel Toplice in Bled on Wednesday, September 13, at 20:00. The Grand Hotel Toplice is within walking distance from the Hotel Golf. The Young Author Award ceremony will be held during the dinner.

Round table discussion: Challenges and opportunities for nuclear safety technical support organizations
The round table discussion will be held in Hotel Golf, Jupiter Hall on Monday, September 11, from 17:30 to 19:00.
Participants
Mr. Benoit De Boeck Director General BelV, Belgium
Dr. Uwe Stoll Scientific and Technical Director GRS, Germany
Mr. Rashet Sharafutdinov Deputy Director SEC NRS, Russia
Dr. Jean-Christophe Niel Director General IRSN, France
Prof. Dr. Leon Cizelj Head of Reactor Engineering Division (R4) JSI, Slovenia
Moderator
Dr. Andrej Stritar Director SNSA, Slovenia
Topics Technical support (or safety) organisations are in many countries in EU and beyond tasked with the technical support and safety assessment for the national regulatory bodies. ETSON (European Technical Safety Organisation Network) connects such organisations in EU, Russia, Ukraine and Japan. Main challenges of today’s technical support organisations include sustaining and further developing the safety research, training and knowledge management. An additional challenge, notable especially after the Fukushima accident, is communication with the public.
