The Canticle of Simeon
Now You shall dismiss
Your servant, O Lord,
according to Your word, in peace;
because my eyes have seen
Your salvation which You
prepared before the face
of all peoples,
a light to the revelation
of the Gentiles, and the glory
of Your people, Israel.
Troparion:
Hail, Mother of God, Virgin full of grace. From you
has shown forth the Sun of Justice, Christ our God, shining
upon those who are in darkness. Rejoice also, you just
Elder, Simeon; for you received in your arms the Redeemer
of our souls, Who has given us Resurrection.
Kontakion:
O Christ our God, through Your birth You sanctified the
Virgin's womb; and blessed, as it was proper, the hands of
Simeon. Today, You have come to bring us deliverance.
Give peace to nations at war, and strengthen our civil
authorities, for You alone love mankind.

Presentation of Christ in the Temple
The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple
concludes the Nativity season. Other names for the feast are
the Meeting of the Lord and the Purification of the Holy
Virgin. About 450 AD the faithful in Jerusalem began the
custom of holding lit candles during the Divine Liturgy of
this feast day. Therefore, some Western Churches refer to
this holy day as Candlemas because candles are blessed on
this day. The story of the Presentation is told in the Gospel
of Luke 2; 22-29 and Mary and Joseph were faithful Jews
who observed the Jewish customs. An important custom
was for the couple to take their first-born son to the Temple
40 days after his birth to be dedicated to God. In addition,
if the parents were wealthy, they would bring a lamb to
be offered as a sacrifice. The custom provided that if
the parents were poor, they were to offer 2 turtledoves or
pigeons for the sacrifice.
When Jesus was 40 days old, Mary and Joseph took him
to the Temple in Jerusalem to be dedicated. They were not
wealthy, so they took 2 turtledoves with them to offer as
sacrifice at the Temple. They were met by the elder
Simeon, a holy man who awaited the consolation of Israel.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he
should not see death before he had seen the Messiah. When
Simeon saw Jesus, he took the baby in his arms and blessed
God saying; "Now, Master, you may let your servant go in
peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your
salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a
light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people
Israel." These words are called the 'Canticle of Simeon' and
it is sung daily at Vespers in the Byzantine Church.
Also, in the temple was Anna the Prophetess. She had
been a widow for many years and was 84 years old. She
spent her time in the Temple worshipping, fasting and
praying. When she saw the Christ child she praised God
and spoke of him to all who were awaiting the Messiah.
Simeon told Mary and Joseph that the child Jesus would be
a sign of contradiction and a sword would pierce his
mother's heart. After Jesus was presented in the Temple,
the family returned to Galilee to the town of Nazareth.
There, Jesus grew and became strong with wisdom:
and the favor of God was upon him.
The icon of the Feast shows that the meeting takes place
inside the Temple and in front of the altar. The altar has a
scroll on it and is covered by a canopy. Mary is standing to
the left holding out her hands in a gesture of offering. She
is handing her Son to Simeon. Christ is shown as a child,
but no in swaddling clothes, but in a small dress,
giving a blessing. Simeon receives and holds Jesus with
covered hands as a sign of reverence and respect. Joseph is
behind Mary carrying the 2 turtledoves for the sacrifice.
Anna the Prophetess is also standing behind Mary and is
pointing to the Christ Child.
'The Ancient of Days becomes a child for my sake. The
most holy God becomes a child for my sake. The most
holy God is purified in order to confirm
бо мої очі бачили твоє (cont. on pg. 3) (prod. na stor. 3)
