JUNE 2018

I was visited early in the morning, on Memorial Day Sunday, by Dr. Kary Williams, pastor of Young Chapel AME Church in Huntington.

He invited me, as pastor, and the good people of Beverly Hills UMC, to join the Black pastors in our community and their congregations for the March Against Drugs and and stop the Violence on that Thursday at 5:15 P.M. and each week thereafter.

The purpose of the march he said, “is to stand over and against the drug traf-ficking and violence that is part and partial of the opioid crisis in our community.

I promised the Rev. Dr. Williams that I would join him and the other marchers. I also stated, I would invite my congregation to join me in supporting this public witness of people-of-faith to justice and peace and for the well-being of our community.

As the well-known passage by the prophet, Amos in Chapter 5 (ESV) reminds us, what God wants from us is not superficial signs of our faith: “But let justice roll down like waters,

and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (vs. 24)

The actions the prophet is speaking of are those that reflect the goodness, love and justice of our Creator – Sustainer – and Redeemer God.

In Amos 5:12b-14 the people are being admonished for their evil doings, as the Prophet declares:

There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is.”

It is not enough to simply believe in God. Indeed, the scripture is filled with ref-erences by Jesus to follow him and his way of living a righteous, just and holy life. Matthew 12:15-21 (Jesus proclaims justice), Matthew 25:34-36 (the way of Jesus.)

So to follow Jesus means there are times we must make a stand against evil and for social justice.

To this point, the opioid crisis in Huntington is the worst destructive death-dealing blight on our community. What shall we do?

There will be opportunities for weeks-on-end to march against drugs and vio-lence. I hope you will consider, “Is God calling me to show up at one of the Thursday marches, to stand up for justice, love, mercy and peace?” Stand up for the restoration of our community. Hope to see you there.
