Principal’s Reflection

Reflection Dear Families,
We congratulate our students who made their First Holy Communion on the weekend at Holy Spirit
Parish: Macey Sheridan, Brandon Seiler, Savannah Coco, Tobias Thomas, Alicia Feeney, Jayda Romano,
Marc Tedcastle, Weston Tedcastle and Magdalena Reyneke. A big thank you to Mr. Brett Wilson, Mrs.
Penny Kelly, Mr. Tony O’Brien and Fr. Joseph for the role they have played in preparing our students for
this special sacrament.
Tonight we celebrate the Episcopal Ordination of Father Charles Gauci at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 7pm. Father
Gauci will be ordained as the new Bishop of the Darwin Diocese. He will be taking over from Bishop Eugene
Hurley, who has been our Bishop for the last 11 years. We thank the Holy Spirit students who are singing in the
combined school choir tonight at the ordination. For those who are unable to make the ordination in person the
liturgy will be livestreamed via the Diocesan website: http://www.darwin.catholic.org.au
Tomorrow, at 9:30am we are holding a special liturgy to farewell Mrs. Lourdes Valles, our school music teacher.
After 34 years of teaching in Catholic Education, across five schools in the NT, Lourdes will be taking long service
leave leading into a well-deserved retirement. We look forward to seeing many past students and staff at this
celebration.
Friday is our Footy Colours Day. For a gold coin donation, students may wear their favourite sports team colours. If
your child does not have a favourite team they may wear their favourite colours. Please ensure that clothes are
sun-safe, no singlets or short shorts please. All proceeds will go towards Catholic Missions.
At our last School Board meeting we welcomed three new members to our team -Sean O’Connor, Bel Sheridan and Emma McDonald.
Paula Sellars will be stepping down from her role as Teacher Representative, we thank Paula for her time, energy and initiative over the
last 7 years. The 2018 Holy Spirit School Board is therefore made up of the following members: President – Fr. Joseph Neonbasu,
Executive Officer: Simon Duffy, Teacher Representative: Emma McDonald, Chairperson: Johanna Stieber, Finance Officer: LeeMian
Chong, and board members Sean O’Connor, Bel Sheridan and Georgina Maika. I would like to thank the board for the fantastic work
that they do in guiding and assisting our Holy Spirit school community.
It has been a fantastic and action-packed term at Holy Spirit, there has been so much happening. The highlights for me have been last
week’s School Production “Around the World”, class excursions, the Father’s Day Breakfast and Liturgy, Book Week Parade, and the
regional sport gala days. A big thank you to the staff, parents and friends who assisted with making these events a great success and we
look forward to an equally fantastic Term 4.

HATS Please label your child’s hat with a puff pen or white out on the
brim of the hat to assist the front office and teachers with the
return of missing hats to their owners.
OSHC BOOKINGS,CANCELLATIONS, CHARGES & CHANGES
Cancellations or bookings must be made in writing at least 24
hours in advance for a normal rate of $25 to apply and for
cancellations not to be charged (Before 2:30pm for ASC and
before 7am for BSC the day prior of booking or required
booking). Bookings made less than 24 hours in advance will
be charged $35 per child.
Vacation Care enrolment forms received after the submission
date will incur an additional cost of $50 per child.
Vacation Care requires 2 days in advance written
notification for cancellations.
The Change of Bookings Form can be obtained from the front
office and from the OSHC building. All bookings and
cancellations must be in writing and made through the front
office. Email accepted, please email:
A $50 late fee (plus $1 per minute) per child will apply if your
child is collected after 5:30pm.
As per the Terms and Conditions on the OSHC enrolment form,
public holidays will be charged if the front office has not
received a cancellation of booking for that date.
Students who have not been collected by 2:45pm will be sent to
OSHC to ensure supervision. Once a child is signed in at OSHC
the casual rate will be charged.
Emergency contacts and people approved for collection of
children must show identification when collecting students
from OSHC and be of at least 18 years of age.
CANTEEN NEWS... All canteen lunch orders are to be placed online at
www.quickcliq.com.au
Registration is easy. Just follow the instructions on the website
to register your account, add credit and you can start placing
orders.
All orders are to be placed online by 9am. Orders can be
placed up to 2 weeks in advance.
Online recess orders are fulfilled before over the counter
sales.
It is recommended that recess is ordered online to avoid
disappointment.
Please update your child’s classroom to ensure lunches are
delivered to the correct room.

please notify the front office by e-mail, phone, the school app,
or come in and pick up a ‘Notification of Absence’ form.
Leaving?
If your child is leaving the school, please notify the office by
completing a ‘Termination of Enrolment’ form which can be
found at the front office.
Late?
If your child arrives to school after the first bell (8:10am),
please send them to the front office to be signed in. If they are
not signed in they will be recorded as an unexplained absence.
Sick?
If your child is sick please notify the front office by e-mail,
phone or the school app. Your child’s absence will only be
recorded as a notified absence if you advise the school on the
day of absence or provide a medical certificate.

GET INVOLVED IN THE SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAMME
Holy Spirit is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School
Banking programme to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young
Australians to learn about money and develop good savings
habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver
account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which
they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our
school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10
deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution
which is based on the number of students who made at least one
School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking programme
is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open
an account for your child in one of two ways:
Online
Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the
link to open a Youthsaver account.
In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for
yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth
certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver
account they can start banking straight away. They just need to
bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using
their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

September, 2018 Dear Parents and Caregivers,
RE: School Swimming Programme Term 4, 2018 - Casuarina Pool Swimming Programme begins on Monday 29
th October (Week 3) and concludes on Thursday 8
th November (Week 4).
There are no lessons on Friday of each week.
Cost of Swimming Programme is $64 per student. Payment is due to our office prior to commencement of lessons. Please do not hesitate in making contact with our front office if you wish to discuss a payment plan for this.
Timetable of lessons is currently being coordinated with Royal Life Saving Instructors and Casuarina Pool staff. Lessons will take place from 8:30 – 1:15pm each day (excluding Friday). Once timetable is set it cannot be altered.
This programme not only looks at stroke development, but survival and rescue skills. It is important for children to learn these necessary skills and to familiarise themselves with what to do in case of an emergency. Our swimming programme is a part of the Physical Education Programme here at school, therefore an expectation that all students participate.
To ensure children benefit from this programme, we are asking parents/caregivers to inform the office of any changes to children’s current swimming level. Our records have been updated from our 2017 programme, however if your child has taken part in further lessons out of school hours through your local swimming club then we must see evidence of a certificate to move your child into the next level. We only accept Royal Life Saving Certificates attained by students.
For students new to Holy Spirit, please ensure we are provided evidence of a current Royal Life Saving Swimming Certificate. We must cite the original certificate rather than a photocopy. For any students who do not have a current swimming level, instructors will carry out assessment on the first day of lessons.

5 September 2018 Dear Parents/Carers At this time of year we are establishing class groupings for 2019. We are also in negotiations with the Catholic Education Office in regard to our staffing for next year. It is important that we have correct data to inform this process. Staff put many hours into ensuring that class groupings are balanced in terms of the academic and social needs of our students. This initial process began last term. It is important that you complete this form to communicate with us your needs for 2019. Class groupings may undertake some change into the New Year as enrolment figures can change over the next weeks with new enrolments from interstate. A request for a specific teacher is not something we can accommodate. Each of our teachers bring different qualities to the learning environment and it is important that our students develop strategies to work with these differences. However families know their children well, so if there is any consideration that will inform class groupings it is important that you let us know as soon as possible so that class cohorts can be finalised. In 2019 we will need to establish a number of classroom structures that may include single class groupings as well as composite groupings. These various structures allow us to spread our students into groupings that meet the needs of all of our learners.
