OLDEST MAN IN THE WORLD TURNS 112

The oldest man in the world is 112-year-old Salustiano Sanchez Blazquez of Grand Island, New York. Guinness presented Blazquez with the honor following the death of Japan‘s Jiroemon Kimura, who was 116.

Blazquez was born in Spain on June 8, 1901. Although he does not believe he should be honored for simply living a long time, he is OK with the Guinness‗ title.

As reported by UPI, Blazquez offers some advice for long living. The oldest man explains that he eats one banana and takes one aspirin every day. Blazquez keeps his mind sharp with crossword puzzles and games of gin rummy with his friends. He also enjoys spending time in the garden.

Blazquez moved to Cuba in 1918 with his brother. He worked with his brother in the sugar cane fields until 1920, when he entered the United States at Ellis Island.

Once settled in the US, Blazquez moved to Lynch, Kentucky, where he made his living working in coal mines.

He eventually moved to New York state, just outside Niagara Falls. In New York, Blazquez held several occupations, working in construction and with industrial furnaces.

As reported by ABC News, he married his wife Pearl in 1934. Blazquez and his wife had two sons.

In addition to his sons, Blazquez now has seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

TRANSGENDER TEEN ALLOWED TO USE BOYS’

LOCKER ROOM

Transgender teen students received a victory from the Department of Justice on Wednesday when the DOJ joined with the Department of Education in stating that a transgender California student, anatomically female but living as a male could use bathrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities designated for boys.

The news, first reported by Politico, pertained directly to the Arcadia Unified School District but had broader implications as to the way transgendered LGBT students are to be treated, attorney Asaf Orr said.

―This sends a clear message to school districts around the country saying ‗This is what the federal government is going to be expecting of you,‘‖ said Orr, a staff attorney with the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

(Orr was also the attorney, who filed the case on behalf of the rising ninth-grade student, who did not wish to be identified.)

The decision is definitely a first for the DOJ, which has directed the Arcadia school district outside Los Angeles to alter its district policies and practices for the student. It also obligates teachers and staff to attend training on how to prevent gender discrimination, and federal agencies will be monitoring the district through at least 2016, the Politico report stated.

PERCY HARVIN MIGHT NEED SURGERY TO

REPAIR HIP

For plenty of players who land on the physically unable to perform list, it‘s a short-term stay that has no lasting impact on the player or the team.

For Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin, that may not be the case.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that his hip injury could result in surgery. As NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport has reported (and as PFT has confirmed), Harvin has a ―slight tear‖ in the labrum. We‘re told that the injury was spotted in an MRI performed on Thursday.

The team wants Harvin to try to practice and play with the injury (along with non-surgical treatment, of course). Harvin intends to exercise his right to a second opinion, and arrangements currently are being made for Harvin to be evaluated by a top expert in the field. (Why do we have a feeling that the names ―James‖ and ―Andrews‖ eventually will emerge in connection with this story?)

Depending on the second opinion, Harvin may ultimately have surgery.

It‘s not bad news yet for the Seahawks. But it eventually could be.

DEION SANDERS LANDS TV SHOW WITH OPRAH

WINFREY NETWORK

We‘re going to be seeing a lot more of Deion Sanders. But not on NFL Network.

According to Deadline.com, Oprah Winfrey Network has ―ordered a new docu-series about ‗the crazy and chaotic family life‗ of former NFL star Deion Sanders.‖ The show, called It‘s Prime Time, is scheduled to debut in 2014.

NFL fans got a glimpse into the craziness and chaos last year, when Deion Sanders and his wife went through an ugly divorce, featuring all sorts of arrests and allegations.

It‘s unknown whether and to what extent Leon Sandcastle will be making any appearances as the zany next-door neighbor who slides his shoes on the wooden floor when he throws the door open and enters the room.

COMPUTER VIRUS TELLS VA MAN TO TURN

HIMSELF IN FOR CHILD PORN

There are just some things that sound so odd that it‘s impossible to believe it wasn‘t made up. Such is the case for a Virginia man who turned himself in for child porn after his computer virus told him to.

The man in question is 21-year old Jay Matthew Riley, who reportedly showed up at his local police station after his computer popped up with an alarming message that read: ―FBI Warning message.‖

Riley decided that, upon hearing a noise that said to pay a fine or risk criminal investigation by the FBI, he would just have better luck turning himself in.

Of course, anyone else would suspect that this would be a virus or a pesky pop up ad, but Riley wasn‘t looking to mess around with law enforcers. The young man decided to bring his computer with him to the police station so they can go through the computer for his illegal activity.

What the police uncovered on Riley‘s search were several photos of underage girls and at least one correspondence with a 13-year-old girl.

SYDNEY LEATHERS GIVES INTERVIEW ON

WEINER

The scandal surrounding New York City mayoral candidate Anthony D. Weiner had new photos published online this week and more revelations also emerged from the Democrat politician that he has been involved with 6-10 women in total, sending them lewd messages and photos.

His wife Huma Abedin stood by his side in a press conference on Tuesday after the initial new sexting photos emerged, saying she has forgiven him.

But the attempt to squelch the scandal seems to have failed as the woman connected with those raunchy photos, Sydney Leathers (pictured above), is talking to the press now, too.

She is described as a woman who is desperate to be famous and is cashing in quickly on her fifteen minutes of fame, doing interviews with the Inside Edition TV show and also with CNN.

There are likely more interviews to come from Miss Leathers and she has turned on her sexting pal Anthony D. Weiner, trashing the politician while defending his wife Huma Abedin.

NEW IPHONE 5S DETAILS

There‘s been plenty of rumored specs and price points running rampant throughout the internet as conflicting reports peg the upcoming iPhone 5S with a display anywhere from the standard 4-inches to 4.5-inches to even 5-inches. The common consensus, though, is that it will be equipped with include a 4-inch IGZO display with resolution of 1136 x 640 and 326 ppi, 2GB of RAM, and a 12-megapixel rear camera. The A6 CPU chip could be the same as the one used on the current iPhone, although graphics could be upgraded.

One rumor seems constant, though, and that aspect could be held responsible for what‘s causing the poor yields and constrained shipments. Apple is allegedly making an attempt to include a fingerprint sensor in the display, likely for security and authentication purposes, but seems to have his some kind of undisclosed snag in the process.

As for the low-cost iPhone, just as little is known except for the array of colorful plastic shells and reputed $349 price tag worth 16GB of internal storage, $449 for 32GB of storage, and $559 for 64GB.

ZYNGA STOCK PLUNGES

Zynga Inc. (ZNGA), maker of the social-networking game ―FarmVille,‖ plunged as much as 16 percent in extended trading after abandoning plans to enter the online-gambling business in the U.S.

―While the company continues to evaluate its real-money gaming products in the U.K. test, Zynga is making a focused choice not to pursue a license for real-money gaming in the U.S.,‖ the San Francisco-based company said today in a statement. The stock tumbled as low as $2.95.

The shares have surged 48 percent this year on optimism that Zynga could use Web betting to revive growth amid a slump in gaming on Facebook Inc.‘s (FB) network. Zynga took preliminary steps to get a gambling license in Nevada last year, working to enter a U.S. market for online betting that may reach $7.4 billion a year by 2017, according to Manchester, U.K.-based researcher H2 Gambling Capital.

―Zynga probably realized they‘re not going to get one,‖ said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities Inc. in Los Angeles. ―There‘s a greater sense of urgency on turning the business around.‖

The company also forecast third-quarter sales and earnings that fell short of analysts‘ estimates as fewer users access its titles on Facebook‘s website.

SNOWDEN RECEIVES COPY OF CRIME AND

PUNISHMENT

Imagine the mood in which Edward Snowden finds himself in the second month of exile in shabby back rooms of Moscow‘s cavernous international airport.

No window on the outside world. No company or conversation. Probably nothing good to read left on his digital devices, if he‘s allowed to have them, to break the monotony of waiting for escape from a purgatory of his own making.

Bored and frustrated, Snowden may well have already cracked open the dead-tree edition of a classic Russian novel given to him by his lawyer Wednesday, along with a fresh change of clothes and the bad news that he must remain in the airport no-man‘s land a few days longer.

And in Fyodor Dostoyevsky‘s ―Crime and Punishment,‖ the marooned National Security Agency leaker may find an echo of his own moral musings, if he has any, over his decision to disclose NSA snooping on the personal communications of millions.

Rodion Raskolnikov is the deeply conflicted main character in Dostoyevsky‘s brooding masterpiece. The aimless and impoverished university dropout convinces himself he is doing society a service by killing the old-crone moneylender Alyona Ivanovna, whom he sees as a leech feeding on the down and out like himself.

But after he kills the old woman and her victimized sister, who inconveniently stumbles onto the fictional mid-19th-century crime scene, Raskolnikov is racked by fever and undulating waves of guilt, contrition and fear.

SENATE PASSES COMPROMISE ON STUDENT

LOAN DEAL

On Wednesday, the senate passed a compromise student loan deal that responded to the high rise of student loan interest rates that went into effect on July 1.

This new proposal would fix interest rates to meet their respective market rates.

Even though this might seem like a good resolution to some, there are many liberal Democrats that strongly oppose this new legislation.

With the vote of 81-18, dozens voted against it because they feel that the lowered interest rate of 3.86 percent can easily fluctuate as high as 10.5 percent in the future for many students.

―Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. who was one of the Democrats that voted against the deal on Wednesday stated ―Students — all students — will end up paying far higher interest rates on their loans than they do right now.‖

And Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., said in a statement on Tuesday, ―The White House is being disingenuous and is trying to sweep under the rug big increases in interest rates for students and parents in the near future.‖

However, there are some Democrats that do believe this new proposal will actually behoove millions of students around the country, such as President Obama.

―In a statement, he declared, ―It meets the key principles I laid out from the start,‖ he said. ―It locks in low rates next year, and it doesn‘t overcharge students to pay down the deficit.‖
