Bozho, Nishnabek!

On behalf of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, we welcome you to Kansas!

We look forward to the week ahead of us, one in which we can come together and share our culture, our stories, our language, and our Potawatomi ways. The Gathering Committee has worked for several months to plan and organize the events and activities we will all enjoy this week. We have several cultural classes scheduled as well as recreational and entertainment activities. I particularly invite you to attend the play “We Fought Termination” which tells the story of how the Prairie Band Potawatomi managed to fight against the attempted termination of our tribe in the 1950’s.

As Potawatomi people, we have a diverse and varied history that has separated us historically. Twenty-five years ago, Potawatomis made the decision that, although history and circumstance has separated us, we would find a way to come together as Potawatomi people again. As we embark upon this week’s celebrations, let us all come together and celebrate Who We Are with good feelings and good will. We look forward to a wonderful week with all of our Potawatomi brothers and sisters celebrating Who We Are at the 25th Annual Potawatomi Gathering!

Miigwett!

Liana Onnen | Tribal Council Chairwoman | Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation

A FEW THINGS TO NOTE• Kansas weather can be hot, hot, hot! Here are a few ideas to keep cool: - Remember to stay hydrated - inside your Registration bag is a water bottle and two watering stations are available at Prairie People’s Park. - Sit in the shade - each Band has a courtesy tent available at Prairie People’s Park. - Walk by the water misters - and wet down your bandana.

• The PBPN supports earth friendly activities - in your Registration bag you will find re-usable dish wear and cutlery to be used during meals.

• The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) stand is located on the east side of the arena and is staffed at all times.

• Prairie People’s Park has no storm shelters - in the event of severe weather, take shelter at the Prairie Band Casino and Resort - 3 miles east of the Park on 150 Road.

• RVs, campers, cars and tents are NOT SAFE in severe storms. As a last resort, a car is better than an RV, camper or tent due to flying debris which can be life threatening.

• For any emergency call 911 or PBPN Tribal Dispatch 785-966-3024.

PBPN member Warren “Hardy” Pikitchwano Eteeyan created the image.

The four feathers represent the four winds and the four seasons.

The fireplace represents a doorway to the spiritual world.

The fire eagle represents a spiritual fire that burns within the heart of the Nishnabek People.

The pipe represents the prayers that go through the fire.

The single feather represents all the veterans that fought overseas.

Bozho, my name is Zhaawan Sam Sprague, and I am a citizen of the Match-E-Be-Nash-E-Wish Band aka Gun Lake Tribe. My parents are Brian Bower and Janine Sam, and Lee Sprague. My grandparents are (the late) Roger and Rita Sprague and Jonnie and June Sam.

I am very excited to be back in Kansas for the Potawatomi Gathering once again. Over the past year, my schedule has been filled with so much fun, and many opportunities

for me to learn and to teach. I have attended multiple pow wows, such as Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa, the Fall and Spring Pow Wows at Pokagon Band, Prairie Band, Little River Band of Ottawa, Walpole Island Spring Pow wow, Nottawaseppi Band, and Gun Lake Tribe. I partici-pated in round dances during the early spring months. I was invited to be a panel presenter giving a Wild Rice Presentation at Kalamazoo Valley Community College as well as a storytime circle to share the importance of passing down what we learn and sharing our stories. I participated in Gun Lake’s Pro Youth Conference and also did a summer internship in the Environmental Depart-ment. I am a part of my Tribes’ Unity Council and travelled to San Diego California for the National Unity Conference in July. I have also continue to pursue my passion for wild ricing as well.

After my time as princess, I hope to continue being a strong role model for tribal youth and continue ricing, attending pow wows, and being an active member of my tribe. Something I feel passionate about is the use of traditional foods for making our bodies strong. For the past three years I have been afflicted with a medical condition that doctors could not figure out what was happening. So I turned to

our traditional practitioners and am happy to say that the natural medicine helped me much more than the other treatments that were tried! I understand the importance of our natural medicines because of my own personal experience, and want to be an advocate for the use of our healing ways.

I also hope to advocate for the restoration of our language and continue to grow in learning our beautiful Neshnabemowin. As I was able to travel throughout this past year I learned how important is is for us to make our prayers and songs in our language when we can. Just as natural foods and medicines can heal our bodies, our language can help heal our spirits and communities, making all of us Potawatomi Strong.

Migwech for allowing me to be your youth representative for the past year. I hope that I respresnted you well and that my Elders are proud of the service I’ve given.

Migwech, inaagmoyaan.

“WE FOUGHT TERMINATION”“We Fought Termination” is an original play written and directed by Jackie Mitchell. It brings to life the significant moment in history when the Prairie Band Potawatomi stood strong against the termination effort.

In 1954, the U.S. Senate and House introduced a bill to terminate the treaty rights of over 100 tribes. Through the efforts of the entire community, a small delegation of tribal members were sent to Washington, D.C. to contest this legislation.

Join us, as we re-live this powerful moment in time when a few Potawatomi lead by Tribal Chairwoman Minnie Evans, delivered their message on behalf of the People of the Prairie, ultimately saving the tribe from termination.

WE-TA-SE AMERICAN LEGION POST 410Bosho!

I would like to welcome everyone to the 2018 Gathering of Potawatomi Nations. This year we are doing something different, we are honoring all of our Female Veterans this year.

We-Ta-Se has a member, I will call her a lady as she is 108 years young, and she is a Veteran of the US Army During WW II. It is ladies like Ms. Julia Kabance that keep the Potawatomi Nation strong. The time has come, with the changes in our Military, where the Female Veterans are now in new roles as combat veterans. They are Fighter Pilots, Ground Troops and many roles only men were allowed to do. With this change, it is time our Female veterans get the recognition they deserve here at the 25th Annual Gathering.

Also we would like all Veterans to register with We-Ta-Se at our booth. The Post 410 will be providing a meal for each Veteran and one guest on Friday evening at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort.
